I deeply regret my experience with Dr Standley and wish I had sought a second opinion before proceeding with treatment. After moving, I saw this dentist for a checkup and was told I needed seven fillings, even though my previous dentist had only recommended monitoring those areas. Trusting their judgment, I went ahead with the work. After the fillings were placed, I experienced persistent dental pain. It hurt to bite down, floss, and even eat moderately cool foods --something as simple as room-temperature toothpaste became painful. I returned multiple times hoping for relief, but only minor adjustments, such as polishing, were made, and the discomfort never fully went away. Years later, I finally decided to switch dentists after living with ongoing pain. My new dentist noted that one of the most painful fillings might not be possible to fix due to its size and that another had a shadow near the nerve, meaning I may now need a root canal ("Doesn't it hurt?" my new dentist asked, surprised. "The other ones hurt more" I replied). I can't help but wonder if some of these fillings were unnecessary in the first place. I wish I had questioned the extent of the treatment before agreeing to it, as I am now dealing with chronic dental pain and uncertainty about my health. I may never be able to enjoy food without pain again, and I'm deeply worried about what my future holds in terms of dental work and discomfort. I'm sharing my experience so others can make informed decisions about their own dental care and hopefully avoid what I'm going through. dr standley and his wonderful staff have taken care of my mouth and it's various problems for many many years. he is always there to answer questions and explain procedures with a smile. office manager "t" always has the paperwork or insurance up to date and can help plan procedures to best benefit your pocket. dental assistant "p" is the epitome of organization and efficiency allowing the work to flow without a hitch. "j" the dental hygienist is the best i have had to work on me in my 60 years of dental necessity. she helped me get over my extreme gag reflex so x-rays are blase and i do not dread them anymore. i have had everything from routine cleaning, and fillings to root canals, bridges, and implants and all with the greatest of skill and success. will never go to another dental practice! thank you team standley!!! read more

Can't get past the receptionist - she's terrible. I want to put a public disclaimer here that I did not get to see the dentist. Call 1: Receptionist gave me address to forward previous xrays (had xrays this year, no dental issues, no personal history of dental troubles etc etc, am current with all treatments, all xrays). Call 2: Forwarded her the xrays. Informed me they weren't good enough for whatever reason and they'd need to do more xrays in addition to redoing the entire set of sets I would be sending her... for whatever reason*. I said I'd get back to her once I checked with my insurance. Call 3: Just moved here, so got my insurance card from HR. Told the receptionist where I work, etc. told her my health information. She told me it was wrong. I told her that this is the only card I have and that Dr. Standley is listed as in network. "There is no such card that you're referring to from that employer", to which I replied "well, I have the card in my hand and could read you the numbers..." she cuts me off "Well good for you, you have a card, isn't that great". ... and continues to actively make fun of me on the phone. Until the receptionist is gotten rid of, you can do 1000% better than here. Even if the dentist is the best dentist to ever walk the face of the Earth, nothing is worth being disrespected by this woman. I'm debating on whether to call and cancel the slot she booked me or just end all contact. It is literally traumatic to speak to her. Simply the worst service I've ever had anywhere in any industry. I've been going to Dr Standley for 4 years. Since I've been going to see him I haven't had any procedures except teeth cleaning. He regularly performs xrays (to keep an eye on leftover damage from a tooth infection I had before coming here). I've nothing but good things to say, the nurses are very polite and friendly. Moving here from Arizona, I was used to everything in the health care industry being very commercialized and corporate. Following a recommendation from a co-worker, I visited Thomas Standley's office. After a third visit, I continue to be pleasantly surprised. Standley is the archetypical "small town" doctor that you hear people talk about but may never actually find. He cultivates long term relationships with patients and employees, takes time to explain things patiently and in detail, is very reasonable, and is personally available after hours for urgent situations. Everyone who works at the office is awesome, but the office is generally on a small town schedule. Nevertheless it seems to work just fine, and what you get is worth the momentary waiting required from time to time. read more

Came to Dr. Standley for a 2nd opinion after being told I needed expensive gum treatment elsewhere. I had a wonderful experience here...The nurse made no mention of expensive work, and said my gums look great. They also did a wonderful job cleaning my teeth. I enjoyed the experience so much I already scheduled my next appointment 6 months down the road. Dr Standley is also one of the nicest guys I've ever met. I had my first cleaning with his office a few weeks back and they did an excellent job. During the cleaning they found a couple of small cavities which they could have filled on the spot. (Very convenient) however I did have to work and it wasn't possible that day. I went back and had them take care of the fillings a week later. They did an excellent job with numbing me before the fillings. I didn't feel a thing from start to finish. Dr. Standley took his time and made sure the fillings were perfectly shaped for my biting action. Very friendly and efficient staff! read more

This isn't your state of the art dental facility like some of the practices (or businesses the way they are now) around town (Champaign Dental Group, etc..). But this is not a practice that tries to push treatments and dental work that is not necessary on you. I was a happy patient for 5 years with no issues until I moved last year. I wish I can find a dental provider like Dr. Standley where I'm living now. The receptionist is not the friendliest person you will meet. But I'd rather put up with her and get an honest and great dental treatment rather than dealing with a bubbly fake receptionist that is looking to nickel and dime you for every possible product they have. If you care for you teeth and your wallet this is the place for you. However if you want to be pampered and you care more for the smiles and front office treatment (to be pushed for more products and dental work than you actually need) then look elsewhere. read more

Been going here since 2009 from a friend's recommendation. Dr. Standley's bedside manner is the best. The staff are always super professional and friendly, as well. Can't beat the free toothbrush and floss, either. Too bad you can't bring your dentist with you when you move. I would if I could in a few years. My experience with Dr. Standley was hands down the worst dental experience of my life! Dr. Standley does hasty and painful work and clearly prioritizes seeing many patients over doing quality dentistry. When I first visited this office, they insisted that they needed to do hundreds of dollars worth of X-rays despite me having no pains or cavities. They did these without indicating that they were unusually extensive X-rays and did so before anyone even looked at my teeth! I l later found out that these X-ray are only covered by my insurance every 2 years and are intended exclusively for accidents. I then had a rude hygienist do a hasty cleaning before seeing Dr. Standley for approximately 2 min where he told me he was concerned about some discoloration and wanted to set a second appointment to redo a filling. I came back to have them replace the filling about 3 weeks later, and had 3-4 shots (more than I recall ever having before) before Dr. Standley came in and started harshly drilling on my tooth insisting that the uncomfortable and unnecessary pressure was standard for this common procedure. After getting the filling replaced, I said that I had some tenderness which he assured me would go away quickly. Over the next 2 weeks the tooth he had worked on became increasingly painful, so I returned to his office. He said that fillings get botched periodically and that it would be fine if he redid it. After a similarly uncomfortable procedure, he sent me on my way again assuring me that it would be fine in a couple days. Once again, weeks went by with persistent pain. After returning to the office for a third time for a botched filling replacement, Dr. Standley said that there was nothing more he could do and that sometimes at his office fillings get messed up and cause patients persistent pain. After a single visit to an alternative dentist, all my issues were resolved. In short, I wouldn't recommend Dr. Standley to an enemy solely because it would help keep this incompetent dentist in business. read more

I visited Dr. Standley's office today for the first time since my previous dentist is no longer practicing in town. I made my appointment a few weeks ago and the receptionist was very nice and helpful. She let me know what I needed to have sent over from my old dentist to expedite the process. I arrived about half an hour early to my appointment and the hygienist was ready for me within five minutes. My hygienist was very friendly and did a great job cleaning my teeth. Dr. Standley came in to check my x-rays and teeth, mentioned a few problem spots but nothing like the "critical gum issues" and the need for my wisdom teeth to come out like I had experienced at another dentist. Overall, I like the atmosphere and the people in Dr. Standley's office. I already scheduled my next visit for this fall! read more

Another local dentist wanted to give me new crown...because of black spots on my molar. No pain, never had a problem with that tooth except for 1 cavity. I had a second opinion with Dr. Standley. He photographed the tooth in question and we discussed why a crown was needed (not needed). He explained the diagnosis of cracks, pain, openings in the tooth that might be a future problem. None of the issues were relevant with my tooth. There was no pain and it looked fine with one filling that was intact. Dr. Standley reassured me, I do not "need" a crown on that tooth and he is my new dentist. Very nice atmosphere, small office...but efficient! read more

I have been with Dr Standley for years and have had cleaings, fillings and major dental work. He listens and then tells you what he thinks the problem is and gives me choices. I am very pleased with his staff as well.. During treatment the Dr and assistant tell me what they are doing, he is also very entertaining. Poor service. dr. Standley was too busy working on multiple patients at a time so that he barely talk to me or answer any of my concern about my crown. When I have question, he got annoyed just like shut up and let him do his job. Very unprofessional. I was a nightmare for me. read more
