The place is awesome, has a welcoming atmosphere and the drinks are great. I like how the menu changes seasonally. That said, I am bummed the Mexican hot chocolate with Mezcal they had over Christmas is not available year round. That stuff was addictive. These are some epic cocktails, in a quaint eclectic setting. When you walk in, you're not quite sure what century this is. Which fits in perfectly with the theme, which is an imaginary collaboration between Sherlock Holmes nemesis and criminal mastermind, Prof. James Moriarty, and "Prof." Jerry Thomas, the father of American mixology, and creator of many classic cocktails, like the Tom Collins, The Blue Blazer, the Tom & Jerry, and the Martinez (the precursor of the modern martini). There's plenty of seating at either the bar or tables, and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. And the craft cocktails. Oh my. It's worth the price just to watch the bartender create these delicious drinks. The Can't Catch Me, I'm the Gingerbread Man is a clever riff on a gin fizz with an amazing presentation that rises a couple inches above the rim of the glass. The Shenron Shake would be a perfect drink for St. Patrick's day. It has cognac, crème de methe, chocolate, vanilla, coffee liqueur and cream. Okay, it's a perfect drink for any day! As soon as I saw this bar existed I knew I wanted to try it out, so for my birthday my girlfriends and I headed to Mandan! Immediately I liked the atmosphere and the playlist was excellent! I was impressed by the menu as well! My friends tried the little waitress cocktail which they loved and I took a sip and it was great! Like a creamsicle. I tried the Louise Wiley at our bartender's recommendation and oh my word what a treat and SO pretty! Absolutely delicious light cocktail. Another friend tried the Chai Again and said it was one of the best she's ever had. Overall the drinks and atmosphere were A+ Now onto the food. We ordered a charcuterie board which the carnivores loved and I thought was good (I had the bread and goat cheese what's not to like?) However it took forever to get to us. They also ordered 2 of their Mac and cheese pot pies, one chicken pot pie, and I ordered the plain Mac and cheese. It took well over an hour to get to us and none of us were super impressed with the food. The Mac and cheese must be 1/4-1/3 cup of food and that's it. Finally I ordered the cookie flight - what a fun idea! Nope. Tiny cookies cut from premade logs of dough that tasted like Pillsbury. Sooo disappointing. Also, the service overall was very hit and miss. On the plus side, the food took so long to get to us that they took it off our tab which was so nice of them. Overall - go for the atmosphere and amazing drinks! I think with a little more effort this place could rival and fancy bar on Main Street in Bismarck! read more

Five stars may give some the impression I am a homer or a friend of the owner; rest assured neither is the case. As I understand it, this is a pretty new establishment and they are just getting their legs under them, but I was really impressed with what they have going on, and where it seems to be heading. Operating a successful craft cocktail bar in Mandan has to be a tall order. Let's just say the city doesn't have an overwhelming reputation for, um, possessing a refined taste. What makes me think this place may find a way to fit in was how engaging and accessible the bartender was with the very eclectic group of patrons when we visited. He created a fun environment and there was some serious discussion concerning potent potables, homemade syrups, and the use of the olfactory to bring out flavors (we all sniffed an onion then drank vodka). Odd? Yep. Crazy? Not in the least. So they do need a sign! We drove around the block twice until my friend saw the chalkboard sawhorse sign. Another time around and it would have been too dark to see it. The interior is very spacious but bare. There is a great bar with a very big back bar, which bodes well for the potential for great alcohols. It sounds like the owners have some definite thoughts and I am looking forward to following its growth into one of the formidable bars in the area. I just hope they can fight off the beer signs, big screen TVs, and squeeze bottle rum. Sports bars have their place in society, but so does Thomas and Moriarty's. And I didn't take any pictures?!?! If you want a place for a great and combative and rude staff, this is the place! I was a customer where the owner (unknowingly) made me a fantastic cocktail after watching how he worked when entering. When I was empty another employee came and asked if I wanted another. I said I wanted one from the same bartender. I was asked "what you can't think I can make one as good" and "are you mad" I said I wanted one from him. Mind you I watched both of them make drinks and he was superior in his style and skill. She said he was busy at the moment, I said I would wait. After the eye roll, complete scoff and attitude from the employee I cashed out immediately. My fiance not liking conflict tipped them 20 and we left. I reached out to the owner on facebook messenger and good luck, very combative just like his employee. There will most likely be a response of "I was next to her" from him, but if I would have saw him would have given a cash tip before I know now who he is. There is not a respect of customer service. Wow, best drinks I've ever had. They are indeed Crafted Cocktails! They take time, so don't expect a drink in 30 seconds. It may take a minute or two but they are worth it! I've been to the craft cocktail bars in Bismarck and Fargo and they are okay, but horribly inconsistent. Last time I went to the "Secret Bar" in Biz my drink was horrible. This place is killer and I think it's because I heard the bartender, who may be the owner, explaining things in great detail to his trainee. He also took time to educate the people sitting at the bar who had questions. It was kind of fun to watch them make drinks. They take great care and it shows. My drink was pretty cheap too considering it's strong. If you haven't been in there yet I highly recommend. It's cool too, it's like right out of prohibition. read more

Best high end, well balanced cocktails in the area with very reasonable prices. We were only folks in the place, and there was just one bartender on at the time. Service was quick and all dozen or so drinks were great. A lot of house specialties drinks can be underwhelming, but that was not the case here. Gin fizz hand an extra nice presentation. read more

Thomas & Moriarty's fills an under-served niche in the Bismarck/Mandan area; that of the quality craft cocktail bar. If you are looking for a club atmosphere, cheap tap beer, obnoxious country or hip-hop or other "modern" noise, or big screen televisions blaring the latest of men chasing balls, then there are other establishments in the area that have your needs covered. Instead, this is a quieter, calmer atmosphere, and the music and decor are more reminiscent of a Victorian parlor than any modern cookie-cutter chain. This is a newer establishment, and there is still a ways to go to really give the finishing touches to the interior, but it is a good start with the resources available and what is there definitely sets the mood. Why I give Thomas & Moriarty's such a positive review though is due to the quality of the cocktails and their authenticity, and the knowledge and passion of the owner for making the best classic cocktails and pairing with light fare that enhances the flavors of the drinks. I enjoyed the one on one attention and conversation with the owner about the nuances of the various spirits and the stories behind the cocktails, and it was a very relaxing couple hours of cocktails and excellent charcuterie to accompany. If you know what a Ramos Gin Fizz is, or enjoy a well made classic daiquiri then this is the place for you! read more
