When I look at myself in pictures, my hair is the first thing I zero in on and it can make me feel less than great about myself. So, if I know I'm going somewhere where I'm going to be in photos, I like to book an appointment here. It's so worth it to leave it to the experts and know you are going to be consistently happy with the results! The stylists are always receptive to your vision of what you're looking to achieve, and if you don't entirely know, there is a lookbook to guide you. I'm usually looking for lots of body and curls, and they pull out their shiny yellow blow dryer, brush and/or curling iron and make it happen. They are also receptive to how much product you do or do not want in your hair. Drybar has recently introduced a new, less expensive service than their signature blowout. The blowout is always fantastic and luxurious, but you can also get a 30-minute dry styling service for just $35 which, if you are starting out with clean, dry hair, can produce very similar results at a little less than half the cost and time. This service has made me go more often and for lesser events than I might otherwise. The vibe here is clean, colorful and fun. I love the bright white and yellow aesthetic and the wonderful scent of all the products. You can have your choice of beverage along with your service, such as a mimosa, wine, or tea, although I have noticed the past couple of times that this only happens if I specifically ask for it. Perhaps a lot of folks are wasting the drinks? Gift certificates here have become one of my favorite things to give, as I love introducing people to the experience. I think the gift of feeling good about yourself is a good one!

We went from fixing my short haircut, to cool pixie, to do-whatever-you-want-Autumn, to let's grow it out, to wash 'n' wear, to fringe bangs, to purple, and to lets let the purple fade and the bangs grow in. We went through her wrist fracture, and then her deciding to go to Alaska and work with sled dogs. (Yes, she did that, and it's amazing that she did.) We went through my multiple job changes, and general growing up. Back to the hair: It was amazing. I have no idea how she does it -- I have weird kinky/wavy hair that's not coarse, but is thick. I should make you all aware that SHE HAS THIS TYPE OF HAIR AND KNOWS WHAT TO DO WITH IT!!!!!!! She's an artist, a goddess, a master of her craft. It PAINS me to no end that our schedules no longer work. I always said that I would never go to anyone else, and it was beyond difficult to make the decision to look elsewhere. I hope she knows that. I hope that one day I get back to her. I hope that you all get to experience her magic. The salon itself has always been very clean, and I've seen it go through a couple design changes in all those years. Becky is/was the owner and always very nice. My favorite receptionist moved to Denver with her boyfriend. Marjorie has given me an amazing Up-Do, and also gave my mother one of the best haircuts she's ever had when she was back home a couple years ago. I should also say that my mother was going to Autumn for a long time as well before she moved out of state. The location is kind of central in the Cultural district. Easy, though expensive, parking at the Theater Square garage. You can also park at three other garages close to the salon, or on the street if you're lucky. Walking distance to Market Square, the Renaissance, Ft. Duquesne Blvd, and the convention center. Benedum, Byham, Pittsburgh Public, and Heinz Hall are all RIGHT THERE. For any curly boys or girls looking for a stylist in the downtown area, please go to Salon Nuvo, and get an appointment with Autumn. You will not be disappointed. I'm so sad writing this because I haven't seen her in so long. And get funky colors. And give her true creative freedom. *gonna go cry now*

I prepared ahead of time, had a babysitter come, left work early, and came with photos. Right off the bat, Sierra seemed annoyed speaking with a coworker. I showed her my pictures of inspo, that did not seem to help. I repeated that I was looking for "sun-kissed" natural looking balayage to add dimension (something we had discussed in a previous session.) I told her that I trusted her, whether it be full or partial balayage (whatever it's called in this context). When I spoke, it seemed that we both repeated ourselves and the communication wasn't making sense, because the photos of the women had middle parts and no bangs. I said I was just using the photos for the color, I didn't have an exact photo of my hair cut and color. We kept repeating ourselves and I did not understand where the disconnect was, so I asked if it would be helpful if we brought another stylist over to help both of us understand what the other person wasn't understanding. She seemed offended by that, and didn't ask anyone else to see what the issue was that was unable to be understood. I said I trusted her, just use the photos as guide, just not as blonde as the highlights in the right but I like the placement of both. We spoke for a good 15 minutes it seemed like before she said "ok, I think I got it, I'll go mix up your color." When she walked away I did not understand why she was saying "I do all my consultations like this", acting like I was coming at her? I never raised my voice, I repeated that I trusted her, used no foul language, like I genuinely didn't understand what the issue was. 10 minutes later, she comes back in a completely different demeanor and was like "I don't feel comfortable doing your hair. It felt like we were arguing." And I thought to myself, "is she serious right now?" I can understand someone being sensitive, I am sensitive myself, but we were most certainly not arguing. So without making a scene, I picked up my stuff, and walked out of the salon in shock. I didn't feel like what had happened to me was right. I called the salon after I left and asked to speak to the Salon manager Melissa. She answered and said a whole spiel of the salon industry and how stylists can refuse service if they don't feel comfortable. She seemed annoyed, because as she was speaking she halfway said "hold on, let me finish" when I wasn't speaking at all- I had just been listening to her. I told her I understand that, but I didn't do anything. She said that the photos I provided to sierra were "wildly different", and she couldn't color my hair because she didn't feel comfortable. So what does Yelp think? Do you think these photos are unreasonable requests, and look wildly different? I have recommended Swank to friends and family in the past, but I will make sure to notify them of this absolutely horrific encounter from a mother who simply wanted some "me" time and to look summer ready. I'm astounded.
