The exposed beam interior only makes this theatre more inviting. The theatre is clean and somewhat well maintained. There was a restroom problem on the day we attended. The sound could use some updating. The volume although adequate was not accompanied by a sound quality deserved by the wonderful production. Thank you for the experience, although not perfect, it was indeed pleasing.

The best part was that this entire event was free, which was a pleasant surprise considering how much I've spent to see anything Phantom of the Opera related in the past. The screening featured appearances by the great grand daughter of Lon Chaney, the actor who played the Phantom, as well as the composer of the evening's score, Scott Lasky. This was such a nice surprise by the theater, and I'm amazed at the effort put into a free event. (Still waiting to see a theater [safely] recreate the famous chandelier scene). The theater is also owned by the city of La Mirada, so it's nice to see the city investing in making arts more accessible for the public. The theater was clean and tidy inside, and the seats felt spacious compared to other theaters. The venue staff were friendly and efficient, and actively managed the bathroom ques to keep it flowing quickly, which I had never seen before but wish more venues implemented. Parking was spacious and plentiful, as the theater sits in a plaza and has a shared lot with other restaurants and a gym. I will definitely be looking to come back to the La Mirada theater for future screenings or productions.

I was especially interested because Placido Domingo was singing (at age 79) and the music sounded beautiful. Much to my surprise , I was quite disappointed in the entire experience as follows: 1- I resented all the Met commercials before the opera started. I didn't pay $27 to be subjected to this!; 2- The sound was only just OK, with the orchestra sounding much better than the singers, who sounded a bit artificial and miked; 3- It seemed not much better than watching it at home on PBS TV; 4- There was no commentary during the intermission as happened on the radio; 5- It all looked so flat. Perhaps the Met should consider 3D to make it more real? 6- It can in no way replace actually being at the Met. Of course, for those who can't be in NY this is the only way BUT From now on I will continue to go to the Met so see opera live.

Like the others, it…read morehouses less than 100 seats and promotes an ambitious array of stand-out, thought-provoking performances and productions. Its staging is small, intimate; however, its potential--in celebrating inspiring talent--is limitless. Steve Julian's "What Kind of God?"--the first in his trilogy of plays which addresses the unjust silencing of others--left me, in fact, speechless. That was the intended irony, I suppose. The highly-talented cast of five--each demanding equal presence and respect--spared no time engaging the audience. I was barely allowed time to breathe before the plot--in its richness, in its depth, in its ugliness--pushed forward. Great acting promises that, allowing you to forget you're merely observing, safely outside looking in. Emily Faris' performance as "Lisa" was most captivating. She was seemless. Even during moments of quiet, it was evident that "Lisa" was conflicted, continually. Emily's "Lisa," even when she first stepped into scene--innocent, seemingly unafraid, optimistic--was hiding something, questioning, censoring. Emily, with apparent ease, delivered. "What Kind of God?" demands discussion. And when the show ends, and you are walking out the door on your way to your car, you find that you are, in fact, strolling. You're thinking. You've left, yet you've taken something with you. Maybe it's a line. Maybe its a gesture. Maybe its a question, an idea. This is a play you'll want to talk about after the fact. The Lillian knew it. And the play expects it.

Elephant Stages is on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Lillian Way, not to be confused with the Asylum Theater, just on the other side on SMB. Will call is roofed, but technically outside, as it's not exactly closed by walls or a door. There are a few benches to sit on, along the entrance, and the Lillian Theater does allow food and drink; candy ($1) and wine ($?) are sold at the will call counter. The staff is welcoming and were obliged to answer our parking questions . The theater is unusually set up. The stage takes over one corner and the house seating takes over the other 3, so you get a wraparound-style audience seating arrangement. Seating as been first come first serve both times that I've visited. This theater is well-ventilated and I believe every seat is a good one, since you get a very broad view of the stage anywhere. There are also 2 bathrooms inside the theater; I've used one, on the far right, and it lacks coat hooks and water pressure. Oh well.
