This shop would easily get a higher review. They have a good selection of bikes and accessories. However, our customer service experience was non-existent. I had called earlier in the day to inquire about cycling helmets. They told me the brand they carried which I initially wasn't interested in but decided to make the 1.5 hour trip to check them out. Upon arrival we were impressed with the selection of bikes but the helmet selection was limited to one brand and sizes were limited as well. As I was looking for a helmet my wife was looking at bikes. A sales person who was initially working with a customer had that customer walk away. At this point my wife said hello and the sales person halfway aknowleged her and walked away ignoring the fact that she may have a question. We decided to shrug this off and continue to look around. We took a stroll to their basement where they have more bikes and did some preliminary sizing for my wife as we are in the market to purchase a new one for her. Then wee made our way back upstairs and back to the helmets. I had decided that I liked one of the helmets but wanted to compare with others they had on display but couldn't find the color or size I needed. After having other employees ignored us I decided it was time to go and internet shop for a helmet. As we were leaving the employee that blew my wife off earlier finally took some interest in us. At this point we had been in the store for at least a half hour. I told him I was looking at their helmets and interested in the Specialized Search helmet they had on display but wanted to compare with other helmets they had. He proceeded to take us to the helmets to show us comparable models one of which was the LOMA. He then walked back to the counter to look and see if they had my size and color I wanted in stock. He then announced that they only had black. Then as I was asking him about the Propero helmet they had on display he turned to help another costomer that had walked in and never acknowledged my question. It's unfortunate that a shop that was recommended to me by a friend fell so short of how highly he and his wife spoke of them. read more

Thick is definitely my go to for tune ups, repairs, gear, and accessories. Laid back 90s skate shop vibe. They are more concerned with getting you pedaling on something that fits you properly and suits your riding style and ability than selling you the most expensive ride, parts, gear. Chris and his staff are useless. First time bike buyer, went in, told them my price range and they gave me a bike to try. I took it for a spin around the block, and the sales person asks "how was it", to which I said "fine". He said "the fit looks great". After I bought it and started to ride regularly, I developed shin pain even on short rides. I asked a cycling friend of mine about my issue and they suggested we go in a short ride together. She quickly diagnosed the problem which had to do with the knee/toe position when the pedals are parallel. Come to find out this is one of the first things pointed out on any basic bikefit web video or article. The fix is to move the saddle further back in the bike. After taking the saddle back as far as possible, the knee/toe position was still not correct. Upon taking the bike back to the store, Chris and staff could not have been any less helpful. The were not willing to offer any suggestions or show any concern for my issue. the didn't offer any different stem or other equipment to try. It was as if I was disrupting their day despite the store being empty with only one other customer. read more

Thick bikes is not a real bike shop. The staff was as rude and cold as the Biden / Harris administration. I tried to buy a bike with a wahoo or Garmin but their inventory was extremely limited and they didn't seem interested in ordering what I wanted. read more

Super , courteous service. I am 75 year old lady making a foray into ebikes. I ordered an ebike from Aventon and had it sent here. They assembled it and helped me get the necessary accessories. What an incredibly honest and friendly staff. Went in on one occasion with questions as to strategies for getting into riding again after years. They had many helpful suggestions including not making big purchases without testing the water again first. On two other occasions I brought in older bikes in for tune-ups. For the first bike the tune-up brought it into nice and safe working condition. For the second bike, they were upfront that the bike was not worth spending money on a tune-up. On picking up the first bike they helped with recommending a proper helmet. The staff was knowledgeable and exuded a love for the sport. As I get back into biking, I plan to make this my go to place. I was initially impressed with the shop and the unusual selection of accessories available but I think the prices are rather high. I got a reasonable deal on a new bike but wanted to followup with the shop with some questions I had. Turns out the place seems to either be staffed by the owner, Chris, or one other person; multiple emails to the owner went unanswered and, when I went to the shop, Chris wasn't there and the person available couldn't help me. To be fair, I've heard very positive things about this shop from others but I just wasn't feeling the love of the store. I think there are cleaner, friendlier and certainly warmer (and I mean temperature wise) places to shop that have a better selection of stuff available in a nicer environment. read more

Great service! Took our bike in for a tune up, new tubes and disc brakes. The quote was reasonable and while servicing the bike they found that the estimate included parts that were not needed in the end which made the price even more reasonable. The turn around time was fast and when we decided to add new handgrips the staff helped us navigate the great selection of parts from moderate to high end as they don't stock and disposable type of accessories. You'll not find a better prices on the web for the most part and certainly won't get the personalized service. Their bike selections are of higher quality and their service is grounded and friendly. We returned recently for a flat tire repair and expected a longer wait time, but the turn around time on a busy day was about 30 minutes. They texted when the work was completed and took the option to pay through the link that was provide and pick up took almost 5 minutes. Very happy to return here and recommend Thick bikes to all. Best bike shop in Pittsburgh. I bike pass three other shops just to go to Thick Bikes. The owner and staff are all friendly, knowledgeable, and down to earth. They have a wide variety of bicycles, parts, accessories, and apparel. They're also not against pointing out a cheaper product to you if they feel it is better quality or better suits your need. Some stores are always trying to sell you a top-quality/top-cost item even if it's way out of your league. I've never been to a friendlier shop. Even if you've never been here before, you'll feel welcomed from the minute you walk in. It doesn't matter if you're a weekday commuter, track racer, casual roadie, mountain biker, weekend warrior, or just looking to get your kid's bike tuned up, you get the same treatment and same quality of service as everybody else. These guys are definitely not bike-snobs. I've never had a terrible experience here. I've purchased a bicycle from Thick, had work and maintenance done, purchased parts and accessories, and have just gone in to bullshit about bicycles. It's a great place. I recommend Thick Bikes to anybody looking for a great, truly local bike shop. Even if you have to bike ten miles just to visit, it'll be well worth it. read more

I've been in a bunch of bike stores over the years and I've found that you can usually get "knowledgeable" or you can get "nice" but if you get one, don't expect the other. I'm not the sort of stereotypical bicyclist people think about; I own no lycra, I'm kinda fat, and I'm not terribly concerned with speed. If anybody on this planet looks like they don't belong in a bike shop, it's probably me. To add to this, I'm also a giant pain in the ass as I'm nearly 6'3 but have a 29" inseam: You don't want to deal with me when I come in to get fitted for a new bike. It's going to be complicated. Knowing this, I usually dread going into a bike store that I've never been to for the first time. Thick pretty much put all of this unease to rest within a minute of my walking through their door when I decided to buy my latest bicycle. The staff at Thick have been great through everything: from my initial inquiries, to fitting my bike and the subsequent supporting me through thousands of miles of crashes and other emergencies. I've never felt pressured into buying anything, and I think I've gotten pretty honest direction whenever I've asked about products I wasn't too knowledgable about. It's also worth noting that I tend to ask a bunch of stupid questions and they have consistently dealt with all of them in a friendly and productive manner. If you're looking for a store you can go for and buy a bike and not worry about being judged by bike nerds, this is the best store in the area without any question. Thick Bikes is the rare intersection of "knowledgable" and "nice" that I mentioned above. They're all really nice people and they know their stuff. I have not regretted a single dollar I have spent here. This is how a company should be run, and as such I will drive across the city to spend six bucks on an innertube just to make sure Thick gets the sale. read more

I recently bought a bike from them. They did a great job. At that point, I was using an old department store Schwinn from when I was only a teenager. The sales lady helped me out. She went through my options and helped find a bike that fit me well. She also indicated which accessories are useful versus a waste of money. I do understand locks and security. I like that Thick is explicit regarding why they don't carry cable locks. It indicates to me that Thick is trying to help the customer and not waste our time. read more

I went to Thick Bikes today to get a simple bike to ride to work. I was worried about going in because bike stores can be intimidating if you're not _really_ into bikes. I drove up and there was ample parking in the lot in front of the shop (Score! How often does that happen on the south side?) I stepped out of my car and was greeted by Dan (I think that was his name) who was friendly and helpful and not even a little condescending. He knew what I needed and recommended a very reasonably priced bike. He helped me pick out a rack for the back of the bike and assured me I could install it myself (though the shop would do it for $8). All in all I was very happy with the service, and the bike seems great (though I haven't taken it on a serious ride yet). They also appeared to have some higher end bikes, road bikes and lots and lots of accessories and parts. I went into Thick Bikes today with a vague idea of what I wanted. Adam was great! He asked me questions about what I like and what I was looking for. He was very patient with me and knowledgable about each bike in the shop. He had me test ride a couple of different bikes as I was deciding between a single speed and a bike with multiple speeds. He also made sure the bike fit me perfectly and that I was comfortable riding it. I got a great trade in deal on my old bike and a discount on accessories for the new ride. I've purchased two different all-city brand bikes from the shop new, and taken a few other bikes in for service and always been totally satisfied with the quality of work that they have done. Thick bikes carries a lot of products geared towards commuters and is less aimed towards high end road stuff. You'll see a lot of steel bikes, some aluminum frames, and not much carbon fiber. Most of the people in the shop ride mountain bikes, so they also tend to have a good amount of mountain bike and cyclocross gear as well. I do a lot of bike maintinance myself, and when I go there for parts and other gear, they usually have what I need in stock, which is a huge plus for me. They have a stock of refurbished used bikes at really reasonable prices in their basement which you might not notice when you head in to the shop. It's a really good alternative to buying a used bike elsewhere since you know it's already been looked over and tuned up by a reputable shop. read more

This is the best bike shop in Pittsburgh. First of all, their standard of work is extremely high. They will go out of their way to make sure you find what you need, and that your bike is in great shape. I bought a mountain bike from them last summer, and before I made my decision I had as much time as I needed to test ride it and ask questions. They were very enthusiastic about talking to me about the bike, and genuinely wanted to be sure it was exactly right for me. A few months later they gave it a complimentary full tune-up. There was a squeaky brake at the end and I would have been fine just riding it that way, but they insisted on fixing it right then and there. "Good enough" is not an option for the work they put out; they are always extremely thorough. Furthermore, the customer service is excellent. Everyone I have met there has been extremely helpful, friendly, and has gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. They are not out to sell you just any bike, they take the time to understand exactly what you want. Also there are various outreach activities-- last weekend I participated in a women's road bike demo that they hosted, and it was a great time. Finally, their selection of bikes is great! They sell both new and used bikes; no matter what you are looking for they will have something for you. read more

I have pruchased four bikes from Thick over the years. The owner really defines this bike shop. This is not a saran wrap jersey weekend warrior kind of rider place as best I can tell though they do have several bikes or that kind of rider. They sell a lot of bikes for people who use their bikes for transportation. Their bike selection is very good and the bikes are generally not the gazillion dollar carbon bikes you see in store windows. I also have had my bikes serviced here and never had an issue. I can't recommend Thick highly enough if you are looking for a bike in Pittsburgh. read more

Repairs are always done in a super timely manner, concerns I have are addressed thoroughly, and they're always willing to chat about my questions. I Bought a bike early this spring from Thick. At first I was very pleased with my purchase but after a couple of months I began to have problems with the drivetrain. Thick did everything they could to address the problem with the equipment I had. Had a very pleasant experiencing working with the guys Adam and Chris at Thick Bikes. My bike was hit by a truck that backed up into me because he didn't see me stopped behind him. These guys were experienced with this kind of situation, helped me draw up a quote within a couple of days, and were knowledgeable and no-nonsense about the situation. They even helped me out by reassuring the guy who had hit me when he showed up at Thick Bikes to verify that my bike was worth as much as it is! Once I gave them the green light to go through with the repairs, they were done in under 24 hours. I was so happy to have my bike back quicker than expected. The guys were super friendly throughout the whole transaction and I would not hesitate to come back here in the future for tricky repairs. Also, I will add that they use a combination of both email and phone to communicate with you when dealing with repair jobs. They sent me the repair quotes in an email and we were able to discuss a few details about the repair via email as well. This place is remarkably awesome! Went in with a half stolen bike a couple weeks back and Adam hooked me up with a better set up on a new bike. Even though bikes seem rather simple (get on bike and pedal), Adam helped me find the BEST bike for my situation. For that, I am forever grateful. Also, the 5-day tuneup included with the purchase of a new bike there was great. There was a small creak in the hub (which apparently was common in the latest run of specialized bikes to come from the factory), and Adam told the mechanics to change it out without charging me. So I ended up buying more stuff to add to my bike. Win win!! Super easy experience and that is worth a ton for a biker noob like me. read more

The folks here are nice and friendly. Their on-hand inventory was broad enough to solve my particular problem (odd sized handlebar needed). They didn't try to sell me something that I didn't need.
