When I was 12 years old, I received a flyer in the mail for a play at Theatre 360. I spent weeks memorizing a monologue and took a bus all the way to Pasadena for the audition. A few seconds into my audition, one of the judges interrupted me to say I couldn't participate in the play unless I was also enrolled in two of their paid classes. I explained that I was just hoping for the chance to audition, and my parents couldn't afford the additional classes. One of the judges reacted kindly and started to explain the process to me, but another judge cut her off with a cold, curt "Thank you, that will be all," and kicked me out of the room. Kids hear no all the time, but there was something so callous about her tone that it stayed with me after all these years. I'm in my 30s now, and this memory came rushing back when I found Theatre 360 flyers in my parents' mailbox. Looking back, I realize they had created a pay-to-play setup presented as open auditions for children. It takes a lot of courage for a kid to memorize a monologue, figure out public transportation, and perform in front of strangers. To cut a child off mid-audition and dismiss them so coldly showed a lack of empathy from the adults in charge. If this is how they handled kids who were simply not aware of their prerequisites, I'd question management's motives and how much they actually care about the kids here. read more

One fateful day ten years ago a family friend (a professor of dance at USC) upon hearing of our young daughter's enthusiasm for all things theater, suggested we look into 'Theatre 360' in Pasadena and noted that for kids who are serious about theater there isn't a comparable program in the San Gabriel Valley. That amazing piece of advice, so many years ago, changed our daughter's life, and our family's, for the absolute best. For the past decade we have had the absolute honor and privilege of being able to engage our daughter in classes and shows that have grown her in every aspect of her physical, mental, social and creative life - on and off the stage. Theatre 360's entire approach is to develop a child's talents and one only has to see a class showcase or a watch one of their amazing productions to realize that tangible growth is possible over the course of a just few weeks, be it a summer or winter camp and even more so over the course of months in a semester class. When we first started at Theatre 360 we were amazed at the poise and maturity of the older teens in the program and we wondered how these older theater kids had grown-up to all be so well spoken and capable, but now, after years of living and loving her rich theater experiences at Theatre 360, we have found our own child has learned and grown to have that same maturity and poise and we could not be more thankful. My 9 year old loves musicals so this summer we tried one of Theatre 360's two week summer camps. She could not possibly have loved it anymore. I was a bit nervous because she didn't know any of the other campers going in but she literally cried for 2 days after camp ended because she missed the camp so much. I am so impressed with the numbers they were able to rehearse for and put together in the span of just two weeks. Highly recommend for any kid that enjoys singing/acting/dancing! read more

We just went to our daughter's end-of-camp revue. It was outstanding, funny, and downright impressive. Two weeks of voice, drama, and dance lessons, with kids of a big range of ages, produced a wonderful musical medley. All three teachers were outstanding and my daughter learned a lot. Kids are allowed to participate as much as they feel comfortable - meaning they can ask for more speaking or a voice solo or duet. All of the kids seemed really happy and engaged. After so many years, I can say with confidence, our decision to join was the best and the most consequential in terms of the girls' personal growth and joy that it has brought to the entire family. My son has been taking classes here since he was 4 years old (he is now 10). It is by far one of the most wonderful places you could send your child. Devon, Kelsey, Melissa, Christa (too many to list) pour their hearts into their students while also imparting their knowledge, expertise, and direction. Theatre 360 is a place that has brought my son confidence, love, friendship and so much more. In addition to taking classes and attending camps, my son has been part of multiple productions and I have been so impressed with the final product of these productions. I truly believe my experience and training at Theatre 360 prepared me for a career in the arts. I was a student at the company for 10+ years and I still apply the principles I learned in my classes to my day to day life working on Broadway. Theatre 360 taught me to be a "curious artist" and always say "yes" to new opportunities, in addition to giving me the confidence in myself to succeed. There aren't many performing arts training studios that will expose you to acting onstage in addition to working backstage/behind the scenes--which is why I'd recommend this company to anyone. read more

I take it all back. While $1170 is a hefty chunk of change for most families, it is justified with the amount of hours and quality of training and direction given during the summer. They technically only charge $370 to be in the show, but there is an $800 camp cost in addition which brings it to $1170. There are less expensive camps and shows, but they do not give the same number of hours as Theatre 360. When you break it down by hour, the camp costs about $13.34 an hour. That is actually a good price for a theatre camp of this caliber. The $370 for production fee is (as I stated in an earlier review) actually a good deal too. Theatre 360 gives a total of 130 hours to prep the show. That is only about $2.85 an hour. So while $1170 is not a small amount of money, they are not providing a small amount of training. I think the only cheaper options are those provided by your middle school and high school drama departments, since the teachers and facilities are paid by the school district not the parents. read more

I started participating in Theatre 360's productions in the summer of 2012 and after my first show, I fell in love not only with the company, but with Theatre. The musical director Johnna is a privilege to work with. She is absolutely wonderful and helps you not only get the right pitches, but connect your emotion with the songs of each show. The director/choreographer/owner of the company Devon is an absolute dream to work with. She gets right down to business and changed my entire perspective of the theatre industry. She doesn't let anyone throw away a line, she makes us understand what we talk or sing about, and she makes us connect every song with something we can relate to in our own lives. Her directing is the best I've seen in my life, and Theatre 360 has truly helped me grow as a person and as a performer in the past year. The most recent show I took a part in was Spring Awakening. Some may say that the content is inappropriate for our age group, but I disagree. We are facing the same struggles in the show compared with our real lives. Sure, there may be profanity and some intimate scenes, but this just makes us better understand some difficult things that we are going through. Doing Spring Awakening TWICE with Devon and Johnna have been the best experiences of my life. They are both so talented and I have learned so much from them. My parents are totally supportive of this company. In fact, they've come to know me better as a person after I joined Theatre 360. To all parents, I highly recommend this company for your theatre loving children. Amazing Company. I was looking for a fun thing to do during the summer of 2013 and saw an ad online for a performing arts camp and decided to sign up, and loved it! I took classes there the following fall and all my teachers knew excatly what they were doing. I auditioned for their winter production Madeline's Christmas and got the part of Simone. Our director, Beresford Bennet ( Also one of my teachers ) Was on top of everything and made the show amazing! The next fall ( 2014 ) I took another class and auditioned for the next production, Peter Pan and played the part of a pirate! We feel so lucky to have found Theatre 360! Over the last three years, my daughter and son have participated in a variety of classes, summer camps, and theatrical productions at Theatre 360 and they absolutely love it. The Theatre 360 teachers are excellent: professional, dedicated, caring, and inspiring. Under their guidance, it has been amazing to watch my children's technique and confidence grow, and to see how the training they have received in their classes culminates in the stage productions. The caliber of talent in these productions is impressive... many of the older students have been training with Theatre 360 for years (and Theatre 360 alumni have been accepted to some of the best theatre institutions in the country for college), which further exemplifies the top-notch arts training that Theatre 360 provides. Having the opportunity to share the stage with these students has been such a great experience and incredibly inspiring for my children. In addition to the stellar instruction and great shows, another thing that we love about Theatre 360 is its supportive environment and the important values imparted to the students, including kindness and respect, commitment, and responsibility. My daughter has been in 3 classes and two productions with Theatre 360. Here's my feedback: My daughter has enjoyed the experience and working with staff and cast. That's the most important factor to me - did she like it and did I get value from the $$ paid. I can answer yes confidently to both of those questions! Both of the productions were excellent and the final product shows the skill and dedication of the teachers (Devon). The rehearsal schedule is intense, time consuming and guess what! It pays off. There are students at varying levels of proficiency in the group and that's a plus for newer actors. I'm not crazy about the fact that they require actors to enroll in a class if they are auditioning for a play (and you cannot withdraw if you are not cast); The classes are costly but pretty much on par with other young actors classes. a note about the review on the building safety issues: The building is not owned by Theatre 360, it is a church facility that they share space in - Safety is important at all times and should be a number one priority; however, repair to the condition of the building is not this group's responsibility. This year's play "Spring Awakening" has mature themes, that may make some parent's squirm (child abuse, suicide, sex, language - The F word is included in one song's title) but even though this play is set about 100 years ago, those issues are still issues that kids today deal with; so while one may find the subject matter inappropriate for youth, this subject matter is relevant in their world today and everything was handled tastefully in the context of the play. I do not think the subject matter was inappropriate for any of the kids that were cast in the play - they're all High School and College aged. Is Theatre360 perfect? no Is everyone going to be happy about their experience? no. I just thought in fairness that as a satisfied parent, in the absence of any other positive reviews, that I would shed some light on the other side of a satisfied customer's experience. read more

As an avid theatre-goer in Los Angeles I can't recommend Theatre 360's productions highly enough - they are world-class theatre experiences that are made amazing by the combination of the age of the performers and the quality of the individual performances. In every scene you just know that you're watching the start of amazing performing arts careers. My wife and I have seen four Theatre 360 productions over the past few years - all of which have been excellent - but the recent production of 'Spring Awakening' was one of the most unique and impactful theatre experiences I've ever seen in Los Angeles. As the review says "these kids are the future of Broadway". I can't imagine all the hard work, discipline and sheer courage that these kids go through to make these productions happen, but whatever it is it is clearly the real deal. Bravo! read more

We had a really bad experience with the director Devon. Our son was involved in two productions over the course of 12 months or so. The good/positive part is the fact that the shows ultimately end up being of very high quality. It's great to have a local theater company that does such enjoyable shows. And the musical director, Johnna, is lovely and super talented. However this benefit is eclipsed by Devon's deplorable behavior. She regularly tells students that they can not discuss certain things with their parents. She will not communicate with us parents, at least in our case. Simply won't return an email or a phone call. Devon treated our son and another friend poorly, in countless situations. She regularly yelled at them, she made demands that were inconsistent, she was not willing to listen to them, she would't communicate with them when asked questions, and on and on. She belittled our kid's artistic endevours outside of T360, and warned them not to cross her for fear of threatening their future chances in "the business". I have never seen my kid so stressed out by a situation that could have been easily fixed. But Devon insisted on taking the low road, standing her ground, harassing my kid and another kid, until the kids just broke. She then made their lives miserable until the end of the production. I know at least 3 kids who won't return under any circumstances. Really damaging stuff here. It's heartbreaking to hear your kid and his friend ask "are all the adults in theater like this?" No, buddy, they're not all like this. Many are divas and many are wound tightly, but i have never met someone who has zero problem breaking a child in order to serve herself. Truly heartbreaking to experience as a parent. And we pay money for this? Forget it - It took us about 10 minutes to find another company to get the kids involved with, and what a differece. Absolute professionals who are there to nurture the kids, not compete with them. Forget it - stay away. Bad stuff all around, and it's been like this for years according to several kids i spoke with. read more

We got to know Theatre 360 from two of my daughter's friends who attended same music class. The parents of those two kids spoke highly of the theatre, although they were not happy with the rule that parents are not allowed to observe the classes. I then enrolled my 4-year old daughter in a 2-week summer camp in June 2017--3 hours a day. She appeared excited but tired everyday when I picked her up after the class. On the last day of the 2-week classes, family members of the kids were invited to see the kids' performance. I am amazed when I see my daughter singing, dancing, acting Thoroughly Modern Millie on the little stage. I have never seen my little girl so confident about expressing her feelings in front of other people except mom and dad. It took quite effort for her to come to this! I give credit to her teacher at the theatre. We decided to continue to enroll my daughter in Theatre 360's Fall class. I am little disappointed to learn that the same teacher who taught the summer campus was no longer there. But I consider Theatre 360 a professional and responsible entity, and I believe they would only choose qualified teachers as the quality of the teaching says it all... read more

Our daughter has been part of the Theatre 360 community for several years now. The classes provide solid and fun instruction in the skills a young performer needs as a foundation. The productions are great because they are polished, professional, and really focus on the ensemble. Most of all, Theatre 360 has really provided a nuturing community of kids who love performing. After the experience I've had with this company, I cannot recommend it to anyone. I found the director of the business to be unprofessional when it comes to customer service. She and the office staff were often unresponsive to messages and questions, which is odd when businesses work with children. If it had been one time it could be written off as things getting busy, but the consistent lack of communication was ridiculous. Sometimes it felt as though she and the staff were bordering on rudeness and indifference, as if I did not deserve their time or my questions to be answered. Their website states that they are a non-profit, but when they send out information about their plays, it seems like the students that participate in the plays are required to take a class with them as well. If this isn't illegal, it certainly seems to be questionable business practice. The teaching staff/quality of the classes also seems quite variable, some of incredibly good caliber and some barely having a grip on their classes, but I suppose that could be said for a number of these kinds of schools. I will say I've heard other parents talking positively about the quality of the plays, therefore the one star. I simply feel for the money provided for these classes, a higher quality of customer service should be expected, and shouldn't be too difficult to provide. read more

I heard about Theatre 360 off of the internet, and going there ended up being one of the best choices I'd ever made. I started when I was 13, and took the summer camp. Then I was in the fall production, and made some friends that I'm going to keep in touch with for the rest of my life. Since then, I've been participating regularly in classes, shows, and tech. Devon has taught me so much that I never would have learned without this wonderful company. I can't even begin to describe how grateful I am for the things that Theatre 360 has given me, and I can promise that you or your child will feel exactly the same way if you choose to go there. read more

I have seen two productions at this company, Madagascar Jr and now The Wizard of Oz. As a working actress and someone who grew up in a children's theatre company, I can honestly say I am extremely impressed with this place and their shows. The kids are clearly well trained and are having such a blast working together onstage. You can tell when kids are genuinely enjoying their work as an ensemble and learning/exploring collaboratively and this place has it! When I spoke to Devon she told me about their educational curriculum and the fact that the kids are enrolled in classes. I think this is a perfect model for young performing artists and truly wish I had the same opportunities growing up! Our company (back in Fresno where I'm from) had the amazing Audra McDonald performing in our summer cabarets and STILL I'm jealous of the level of work done here at Theatre 360. A must for young creative minds interested in the business or just willing to have fun learning and playing! read more

We enrolled our daughter to allow her to explore a new world (our older kids are athletes). She has been surrounded and embraced by absolutely the kindest, most dedicated and supportive instructors. She's been given the time to grow, as well as the opportunity to shine. It's a very safe place where she feels at home, and she looks forward to attending her weekly classes, as well as the shows. To put it simply, there is no other theatre as amazing, educational, and outstanding as Theatre 360. I have been attending classes for 5 years and doing shows for 3 and the all the people involved could not be any more committed. The time that is put into making every performance is just remarkable. Devon, the artistic director and founder of Theatre 360, has made into the person I am now. Polite, respectful, knowledgeable, and confident. If it weren't for Theatre 360, I would have no idea who I am today. In every class and rehearsal I learn at least 3 new things. What also makes this company amazing, are the committed students who all share the same passion and therefore a kinship. Another attribute I admire is that the students crew the shows. That means that students run the light board, sound board, help with costumes and makeup, props, move set pieces, and even stage manage. I got the chance to stage manage this past March and I may have found a new career option. Even greater is the professionalism of it all. Every student is treated like an adult actor and is expected to preform as such. If your child is not up to that challenge, then perhaps you should look for a junior theatre. I, as well as many other students, have gotten so many unimaginable opportunities thanks to Devon and all the teachers at Theatre 360. Anybody who says a bad word about Theatre 360 has no idea what they are talking about. Nobody could ever find a theatre company nearly as spectacular as Theatre 360. read more

They've not only learned about singing and dancing but about the behind the scenes stuff(costumes, sets, lighting) that go into a show. This group has to be one of the most disorganized theatre centers I have ever encountered. My children had attended their theatre camp for a number of years with mixed feelings. We both loved and hated them. They were never ever to provide a schedule of the classes in advance and sometimes we were disappointed with the teachers. We were able to put up with these quirks as part and parcel of the the show biz mentality. This year, my daughter made an unfortunate choice - auditioning for a production. Apparently, they contantly change their productions without prior notice on an ongoing basis. My daughter thought she was auditoning for one play, but when they posted the casting, it had been changed to another. One that I was unfamiliar with and later found to be inappopropriate for PG audiences (I noticed 360 seemed to have some difficulties with taking it to school). They handed out scripts and had the kids censor curse words and suggestive language (some of which they kept in the play). The kids carried heavy scenery - my daughter hurt her back and then was admonished for missing the subsequent rehearsal. My daughter found that the whole rehearsal a draconian experience. I saw her self-esteem diminish under the constant battering. The director Devon was totally unable to give constructive criticism. At any rate, we pulled her out. We were never refunded the $150 we paid to help support the production. Although the camp director agreed to refund the tuition, Devon later reversed it., claiming they had lost money on costumes and rehearsals and recasting my daughter? (what about the $150 - Devon kept cutting my daughter out of things - no need to recast ). In my susbsequent contact with this group about the refund, I have been amazed. Devon claims she spent time working on solos with my daughter (my daughter had one line); lost money on costumes (my daughter was basically in one scene?). The other problem we found was that it is an elite group which seems to be a poor fit a town like Pasadena which tries to include people from all economic strata (grant organizations like Pasadena Educational Foundation take note). At this point, I am really surprised that anyone pays for this abuse. I would not recommend this group to anyone, My kids do participate in a more pleasant kids theater out of town so I know you can put on quality children theater productions without abusing kids. read more

I am dismayed at the negative comments made on this site and want to highlight to anyone looking, that these people are not representative of the community at this amazing place. My daughter has been doing shows and taking classes at Theatre 360 for over 10 years. It is her passion and her dream. This program is unparalleled in terms of support, professionalism and quality to get her to her goal. Over the years I have met 100's of parents with kids of varying talents and commitments and the negative comments on this board are not representative of the community at all. Most of the kids who take this program seriously end up in Performing Arts High Schools and top college programs (Carnegie Mellon, Yale, University of Michigan to name a few). As a long term parent I have watched, heard and witnessed various parental reactions throughout my years. There is an expectation these days that just because you attend a program, you are allowed to tell that program how to run. And if you don't get what you want, then you can just smear it online. It's hateful, vindictive and unfair. Theatre 360 is a training program, ergo if you want to participate in the shows you must be trained. There are pay to play programs out there, this is not one. It is a community, built on hard work, dedication and respect. This is developed over time and must be cultivated. I appreciate that when my kids commit to a show, that all the other kids are required to make the same commitment. It is a community effort and when one kid (or family) doesn't hold up their end of the commitment, it hurts everyone. Not everyone understands or appreciates this policy even in cases where they agreed to it. The reason that the alumni of this program find such great success is that, unlike many programs, this one holds them to the highest standard of themselves. Theatre 360 is not a parent controlled program and therefore not for everyone - but if you have a child who really loves to perform, wants to learn about what it really takes to make it in the professional THEATRE world and you are a parent who can step back and let that build, then this is the place to go. No other program in Southern California touches this one and I for one am so grateful to have found it! read more

We have found that Theatre 360 provides exceptional education and training in the performing arts for students of all levels...those who are just beginning to explore and learn about performing arts as well as those more experienced students who want to take it to the next level. Our experience has been that students at the beginning level are encouraged and nurtured while those at a more advanced level are challenged to grow and hone their craft. Students are encouraged to explore all areas of the performing arts...acting, dance, voice as well as behind the scenes such as sound, lighting and costumes. The Director, Devon Yates, as well as all of the staff work closely with the students to develop and encourage their love of the performing arts. As a student here from the time I was 7 or 8 I have nothing but good things to say. Theatre 360 has taught me responsibility, proper social graces, and an extensive knowledge of theatre. I have made SO many wonderful friendships that will last lifetimes and I've gathered a sense of what going into show business is like. It has prepared me for the path I want to lead and I will be forever grateful. I for one have had an amazing experience with the staff here. Devon Yates- the founder, has been amazing. Although she pushes you, it's always because she knows you can be better and she wants to have you be the best you can be. She's been kind and helpful and an overall amazing teacher. Johnna who is the musical director is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. She has the brightest smile when you walk in the room and it brightens your day.
