Finally! A delicious meal in Oslo! It was a long time coming...but it finally happened! I came here with one of my close friends and her family during the middle of the week at around 2:30pm. The place was hardly crowded, but we had a reservation, so it didn't really matter. Truthfully, I had previously avoided this place due to the pretentious atmosphere of it and the fact that every time I ask about it, someone tells me 'the celebrities always eat there'. That is enough to deter me from any place (means the place is probably too fancy for my liking). I was happy that this place did defy what I had expected. A bit pretentious? Yes. But I was so thankful to only have one fork and one knife, and not a bajillion. For an appetizer, I ordered the 'Hummer Carbonara' or Lobster Carbonara. It was 195kr and considered a 'småretter', or small plate. Well, that it was not. It would have easily filled me up and then some. But oh my goodness was it delicious! Definitely the best thing I have eaten at any restaurant in Norway thus far. Since I had already placed my order for my Entre, I had to just make room for it. I ordered the Grilled Okse Entrecote. It came with a side of mushrooms, green beans, and bearnaisesaus. The menu said it would also have some fries...but I never saw them come out (and didn't complain because I was so full from everything else!) This plate was so-so. I'm not really much of a red meat eater, so when I do eat it, the meat must be cooked to my liking (medium-rare). This was pretty well-done. Definitely not the best cut I've ever had, but it was certainly edible. But I will give a special shout to their green beans. INCREDIBLE. My first time in Norway even seeing green beans on a menu (they are such a staple item in the US). Theatercafeet cooked them to perfection. This entre ended up costing 295kr. While I definitely preferred the lobster carbonara to the main dish, I have no right to complain about both. Service was excellent here and we got our water refilled without asking. Believe me when I say that that is a big deal in Oslo. The ambiance was nice. Not really my scene, but definitely someone's! As for the celebrities...that is certainly the truth. While I didn't know who any were, the people with me said the beautiful woman at the table next to us was Liv Ullman and the guy who walked in prior to us leaving was Morten Abel. No idea who they are, but Norwegians apparently do. This is most definitely a place I'd return to...especially if they keep that Hummer Carbonara around on the menu!

The food is amazing. Highly recommend the Roe Deer Tartar, you can taste the wild and forest from it. The shellfish soup has a quite rich taste... you will love it if you like strong seafood flavor, I'm still waiting for dessert ...

I have wanted to check this place out for a while and last week I did and boy it was worth the wait. I love eggs Benedict and the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon was beyond amazing. The sauce was pure perfection. This is definitely the place I would frequent for a special occasion. I would definitely recommend brunch or lunch here!

If you find yourself in Oslo and want a dining experience that evokes something uniquely Norwegian,…read moreat least without having to spend an arm, a leg and any other appendage, well, you're in luck. This is an ideal outdoor spot on a balmy evening since it's in the pedestrian plaza right next to the central train station. After spending the day looking at naked statues, appreciating Nobel peace prizes, and walking on the opera house rooftop, Jamie W. and I were tuckered out and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. We just walked across the street and found a table quite easily here even though it was obviously quite popular with young Oslolites (...is that what they're called?). We were pretty famished since it was a long time since the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel. First up were the 79 NOK ($7.90 US) plate of Truffle Fries topped with grated parmesan with a side of truffle mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3CX84vq). Less Norwegian, more TGIFriday's but satisfying nonetheless. More Norwegian was the 149 NOK ($15 US) Norwegian Red Beetroot. It was served with horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3R9zSBb). It was just four bites but tasty and earthy in a different way. We moved on to the entrees from there and split two between us. First was the 219 NOK ($22 US) Chicken Salad where they marinated chicken breast in mustard and grilled it. It topped a bed of mixed greens, buckwheat, tomatoes, and radish, all of it drizzled with tarragon mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3RyNVQr). The mustard and buckwheat added a Norwegian dimension to an American standard. Then came the heartier 259 NOK ($26 US) Steak Sandwich which appeared to center around a tender grilled flank steak with the same accompaniments as the beetroot - horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3qagzMf), We saved room for dessert, the 149 NOK ($15 US) White Chocolate Sphere which became a table performance with a tiny pitcher of hot raspberry coulis poured over the white chocolate and raspberry cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3qfPTcM). A bit showy but a nice finish. It made us feel like upscale Norwegians dining al fresco. FOOD - 4 stars...melding of Norwegian and American culinary sensibilities into appetizing dishes AMBIANCE - 4 stars...casual and relaxing, the nice weather was the key advantage that evening SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty attentive considering the crowds TOTAL - 4 stars...a good way to sample Norway through your palate RELATED - Exploring Norway? So we read reviews on yelp and based on that we tried it. Worst decision EVER!…read moreThe catfish burger: the catfish is a fish cake with possibly a hint of fish somewhere. Came with small prawns in a thousand Island style sauce. Just bad. The herring: somehow this was sweet. We couldn't bear to finish it. The raw yolk made it just tolerable. The liver pate. This was toasted. In fact grilled & tasted more like blood sausage. Was ok. Just ok. The duck. Just awful! Dry, rubbery. Not a single redeeming feature to this dish. All dishes were served with pan fried mushrooms and tinned/pickled chopped beetroot, gherkins, sun dried tomatoes, artichokes & olives all from a jar came with the duck. Even the bread & salad were bland. The elk burger is no more. In short AVOID this place unless everything else is shut and you are prepared to spend KOR180 on a bad dish of food!

They have a truly astounding assortment of Aquavit and servers who know all about it and can explain the differences for the curious tourist. A bit in the pricier side but well, well worth it. The ambiance was to die for. We sat outside but in the winter the interior, full of mellow candlelight and awesome kitch in the walls (including a walk full of antique guns and swords) would do a lot to keep out the cold and make one feel warm and blissful. A great find!!
