If you find yourself in Oslo and want a dining experience that evokes something uniquely Norwegian,…read moreat least without having to spend an arm, a leg and any other appendage, well, you're in luck. This is an ideal outdoor spot on a balmy evening since it's in the pedestrian plaza right next to the central train station. After spending the day looking at naked statues, appreciating Nobel peace prizes, and walking on the opera house rooftop, Jamie W. and I were tuckered out and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. We just walked across the street and found a table quite easily here even though it was obviously quite popular with young Oslolites (...is that what they're called?). We were pretty famished since it was a long time since the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel. First up were the 79 NOK ($7.90 US) plate of Truffle Fries topped with grated parmesan with a side of truffle mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3CX84vq). Less Norwegian, more TGIFriday's but satisfying nonetheless. More Norwegian was the 149 NOK ($15 US) Norwegian Red Beetroot. It was served with horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3R9zSBb). It was just four bites but tasty and earthy in a different way. We moved on to the entrees from there and split two between us. First was the 219 NOK ($22 US) Chicken Salad where they marinated chicken breast in mustard and grilled it. It topped a bed of mixed greens, buckwheat, tomatoes, and radish, all of it drizzled with tarragon mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3RyNVQr). The mustard and buckwheat added a Norwegian dimension to an American standard. Then came the heartier 259 NOK ($26 US) Steak Sandwich which appeared to center around a tender grilled flank steak with the same accompaniments as the beetroot - horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3qagzMf), We saved room for dessert, the 149 NOK ($15 US) White Chocolate Sphere which became a table performance with a tiny pitcher of hot raspberry coulis poured over the white chocolate and raspberry cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3qfPTcM). A bit showy but a nice finish. It made us feel like upscale Norwegians dining al fresco. FOOD - 4 stars...melding of Norwegian and American culinary sensibilities into appetizing dishes AMBIANCE - 4 stars...casual and relaxing, the nice weather was the key advantage that evening SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty attentive considering the crowds TOTAL - 4 stars...a good way to sample Norway through your palate RELATED - Exploring Norway? This was my first time here and I was excited to try it since my friends, who live in area, had really talked it up. They serve a 3 course meal for a little over kr 400. You can get each meal separately in case there might be one course you dont care for, which I like. When we were there at the end of July, the starter was two crab cakes on a papaya salad, the entree was a choice of char (røye) with peas and a side of potatoes or pork loin (svinekam) with a bean salad, and for dessert it was apple jello, chocolate ice cream with a rhubarb compote, and a cinnamon and sugar merengue all topped with grilled cherries freshly picked from one of the employees gardens. After you have ordered, they come out with freshly made olive bread and aioli. The olive bread was yummy and it was easy to tell the aioli was fresh and homemade. The crab cakes were decent for being crab cakes, but I hate crab so I can't judge them on it. It tasted like they had more curry than crab though. The pork loin was a little dry and had a little too much of something. I am not sure if the taste of the capers were getting in the way or what it was. At first I thought it tasted like too much rosemary, but I couldnt actually see any rosemary. Either way, it was strange and although I liked it and think it's far better than what most restaurants serve in Oslo, I guess I expected my meat to at least not be overcooked for the price I was paying. The dessert was exciting. I had never had apple jello before, but it turns out those two things are perfect for each other. The ice cream was also very good and tasted homemade. It should be pointed out that it was small bits of jello and maybe a tablespoon of ice cream. I typically hate merengues because of their texture, but this one was warm and a little gooey inside and it was awesome. My friend had the char and seemed to like it, but wasn't used to being served fish on the bone so she struggled with that a little. All together for the three course meal, 3 glasses of house white, and a cup of coffee, I paid around kr 700. For the food alone, I might have given this place only three stars. However, the service was great and I loved the atmosphere. Their outdoor area along with the very hippy look and vibe of the waiters made me feel like I was back in San Diego and they definitely get an extra star for that. If the food doesn't bring me back, the atmosphere will.

So we read reviews on yelp and based on that we tried it. Worst decision EVER!…read moreThe catfish burger: the catfish is a fish cake with possibly a hint of fish somewhere. Came with small prawns in a thousand Island style sauce. Just bad. The herring: somehow this was sweet. We couldn't bear to finish it. The raw yolk made it just tolerable. The liver pate. This was toasted. In fact grilled & tasted more like blood sausage. Was ok. Just ok. The duck. Just awful! Dry, rubbery. Not a single redeeming feature to this dish. All dishes were served with pan fried mushrooms and tinned/pickled chopped beetroot, gherkins, sun dried tomatoes, artichokes & olives all from a jar came with the duck. Even the bread & salad were bland. The elk burger is no more. In short AVOID this place unless everything else is shut and you are prepared to spend KOR180 on a bad dish of food!

They have a truly astounding assortment of Aquavit and servers who know all about it and can explain the differences for the curious tourist. A bit in the pricier side but well, well worth it. The ambiance was to die for. We sat outside but in the winter the interior, full of mellow candlelight and awesome kitch in the walls (including a walk full of antique guns and swords) would do a lot to keep out the cold and make one feel warm and blissful. A great find!!
