In the West End and longing for cake, I remembered sampling the Yarn Cake's delicious baked treats at an elite event last year. No sooner where we headed to the home of yarn and cake, for tea and accompanying sweet things. I can't remember the last time I received as warm a welcome as Antje gave us. She welcomed us like old friends, past the multitude of yarn, and into her wonderful emporium of loose tea and fresh cakes at the back. The Yarn Cake smelled delicious; fresh and sweet. It's size certainly makes for a real cosey feel. - Warm and snug! We had come for tea and cake and we'd certainly come to the right place! You want tea but you don't know which one? Have a smell of this, a smell of that. So much loose tea, how could I possibly choose?! I went for an Oolong. - Partly because it's nice to say (Oooooolong) but also because I'd never tried it before. My pot of Oolong was delicious and Antje even kindly offered to re-fill my teapot if I so wished! Now, the main event. - The cake! Quite simply, delicious. I loved my slice of pear and marzipan cake. Simple and sweet and light. Perfection. It really was a bargain and we left smiling from our sweetness fix. Just how tea and cake should be. Like cake? GET HERE!! Like knitting? GET HERE!! OK, I'm a little biased as I know the owner through friends of a friend but regardless, go for the cakes. Baked fresh, these German style delicacies are heavenly and always delicious. There are always a few choices, many of which I've never heard of before. Last weekend I plumped for the cherry cake but I've enjoyed the pear and almond tart, and I already can't wait go get back to get a thick slice of stollen next winter! There is a good range of drinks, coffees, teas, lovely hot chocolates, ohhhh and yarn! The staff are friendly, laid back and very welcoming, and it's a great wee place to sit and watch the world go by on Queen Margaret Drive. Don't let the knitting aspect put you off, nor the size. I really wish this was my local yarn shop. I have only been here once. I wandered in, and a friendly lady asked me if she could help me. I was looking for lace yarn and to have a quick browse, I was interested in anything as long as it wasn't an acrylic blend. The lady told me that she didn't stock anything with acrylic in it. Good! I thought. I'm going to like this place! The displays are lovely and the cake and coffee smelled great! It was lovely to see yarn by local dyers on display - I bought a skein of Blue Faced Leicester 4ply by Abstract Cat. There was a good selection of lace yarn on offer but I decided to go for the 4ply instead because I can never have enough! There was also a fantastic selection of KnitPro needles. Basically, this is a shop for the serious knitter, the knitter who cares how what they produce feels, and has an eye for quality fibres. This is a shop for people who like to knit lace, who know what DPNs are for, and aren't phased by using five needles at once! It's a shop for proper knitters. But it's also a shop to learn to knit in, with places to sit, drink coffee, eat cake, and be introduced to the craft by some people who really love it. I will be back. read more

Ever want to go to a yarn store on vacation but have your disinterested-in-knitting spouse in tow? Does the Yarn Cake have the solution for you!! I set my husband down in the cafe with a lovely slice of almond cake, and got to chat with the owner about her yarn selection and browse without the sense I was wasting my husband's time or boring him. I ended up with three skeins of U.K.-made yarns that I wouldn't have been able to buy back home -- and my husband was kind enough to save me a few bites of his cake. The whole experience was perfect - great cake, great yarn, and a wonderful proprietress. I wish there were more yarn shops like this one! read more

Being a bloke and all I obviously haven't got the foggiest when it comes to knitting, but DO NOT let this put you off visiting The Yarn Cake. Relax, kick back, enjoy a coffee, watch the knitters knit and eat some fantastic German style baking. All cakes are loving prepared on the premises by German born Antje so what you will get is real, authentic, German home-style baking. The great thing about German cakes is the fact they don't often contain too much sugar and so nothing is sickly sweet. And because they have less sugar equals less calories, woohoo, which means you can eat twice as much, yeah!!! Unfortunately, although more than capable (as I have sampled some at a recent Yelp event) there are not currently any baked savory delights for sale. It is a shame as I'd always be more inclined to go for a savory treat. Still a great little gem of a cafe on one of Glasgow coolest little streets! read more

I just need to update this place purely because if one person sees it in the feed and goes 'oh, I think that sounds lovely, i should drop by for we nosey' then, I'll feel good. it's all been said before, but it's fine to say it again. No i'm not a yarn junkie, no I don't tap up my wool vein and rob grannies to feed my addiction, but I do like a spot of coffee, cake and wifi in a chilled out and bright (key to surviving Glasgow in the winter... summer) location with boh ol windows (that ones for you Ross C). Coffee? Artisan Roast please... Cake? Home made selection of what feels like German origin (and given that the owner and resident yarn pusher is German, kinda makes sense) Wifi? Aye, tis there! Done, dusted, casted off, casted on, dropping no stitches and other made up knitting terms. read more

This shop has a lovely friendly atmosphere and I was made to feel very welcome. During the time I was there I think I spoke to every person in the place including all of the other customers. They have a good selection of yarns with a wide range of prices including many that are harder to find in the UK. Even their cheapest ones are good quality. There were four or five types of cake, including some just out of the oven, and an excellent selection of hot drinks. I settled down for an hour of knitting with my new yarn (getting some helpful advice along the way). I love this shop! It is a little cramped around the tables so I wouldn't advise going there if you are looking for thoughtful isolation but it's perfect if you're up for a natter and making a few new friends. read more

When my boyfriend and I went in, it was not long after they opened, so there were some things that weren't quite ready yet, as tends to happen. Still, in the Yarn Cake, we found a cute, pleasant atmosphere, staffed by incredibly nice people. It's pretty cool that the kitchen is right there in view, so you can see when something comes fresh out of the oven. We didn't get much of a chance to sample baked goodies, but the coffee was great (from Artisan Roast, I believe), and the prices were very reasonable. I bought a few skeins of yarn, and liked that they had such a wide selection of things, from affordable to the extravagant ones I could only sigh at for being way out of my price range. I don't get over to that part of town very often, but I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

A tiny gem of a yarn shop. I love the cakes and their drinks are great. Friendly [very!] staff, a nice selection of affordable yarns and all in a space that manages to be un-claustrophobic despite its compactness. Seating for tea and cakes, or just knitting. I've been meaning to write a review for ages and now I've finally given myself the kick up the backside I needed! The Yarn Cake is brilliant and I really don't know how Antje manages to fi so much awesome into such a small package! On your first visit you might be a bit taken aback to realise that this shop that sells epic cake has only 3 tables inside. By your 3rd visit you'll be an old hand and realise that when the place gets busy knitters, crocheters and other crafters are only too happy to share tables and chat about each other's projects as well as all sorts of other things. I've partaken in chats ranging from literature, science and the arts to Great British Bake Off, Simons Cat and Doctor Who! The shop can be particularly busy with the most interesting conversations during the Thursday Knit Night, although the banter at the Tuesday Knit Night is usually good too! I don't drink most hot drinks myself, but my son loves the many tea varieties on offer here. What he loves even more though are the 'Hot Choc Onna Sticks'. Antje and her band of brilliant staff make these themselves, they are basically chocolate, spices and I'm not sure what else mixed together and turned into little blocks on wooden stirrers. You get one of these, a cup of hot milk and a small saucer of absolutely delicious mini marshmallows (not the flavourless supercook ones everywhere else uses that taste of nothing but the cornstarch coating...) and you stir until your hot chocolate is chocolatey enough. I'm not sure what the current flavours are but I've seen white chocolate and lemon, and either milk or dark with ginger whilst the other had cinnamon. If you go in at Christmas you might even manage to get some flavoured with lebkuchen spices! I do enjoy the fruit juices that are stocked and if you order pear or apple juice you'll be able to get it hot or cold! I really like the apple and ginger heated up, especially in cold weather. The owner of the shop is German and decided when she opened that she would put traditional German baking at the heart of the store and I can honestly tell you that no matter which cakes have been baked on the day you visit you won't be disappointed! My personal favourite is when she bakes raspberry meringue, but it isn't necessarily what you'd picture when you think raspberry meringue. Instead of a drier raspberry pavlova style dessert it's a delicious sponge layer, topped with raspberries and finished with a soft, fluffy meringue that's so light and pretty much melts in your mouth. At Christmas she also bakes traditional German cookies and stollen! As if all of that wasn't enough this place is also a yarn store that sells everything you could possibly need! All of the yarns that The Yarn Cake sells are good quality ones that the staff aren't just trying to sell to you, but are willing to buy and use themselves! And whilst some of the higher end yarns are rightly quite expensive, not all of the yarns in store are. Knowing that knitters come from the whole spectrum of society Antje is keen to ensure that she has yarns to fit every budget. One of the ranges stocked is a company called Drops who produce yarn as good as many of the more expensive high street brands but believe in keeping their prices low. As well as an entire T.A.R.D.I.S. Worth of yarn you can also buy all the tools you need to turn the yarn into any project you can imagine and a range of pattern books! I have been looking for a local, friendly yarn shop - as a fairly new knitter, I like somewhere I can browse without pressure and can ask for advice - I got this at The Yarn Cake! Very friendly staff. This is a small shop, so don't expect a massive range, but they do have lovely yarns at a wide range of prices. They also sell accessories (the only downside is that they don't sell many patterns, although they do have a good range of books). I didn't use the cafe, but the place looked spotlessly clean and lovely. My children were happy to sit at the table by the window while I browsed. I will def be back! read more

I was just back at The Yarn Cake yesterday (okay, fine, I go about twice a week) and it was very exciting to see all the fabulous Christmasey things that are happening at Yarn Cake: the tree is up, stollen is in the oven and all kinds of festive events are taking place between now and the end of the year. I was so looking forward to visiting this shop, I reckoned it would kill two birds with one stone...yarn and cake! I was however a bit disappointed. The shop is tiny which is fine and is on two levels of the main shop area and cafe tables and a mezzanine level with a bit more yarn and serving area. The first criticism was that the shop was really really cold and the cafe area of 3 tables is right at the front door, so very draughty. The girl serving did offer us the table she was using with her laptop as it was next to a heater but wasn't terribly insistant as she didnt actually move the laptop or make any move to clear the table she was at. We ordered 2 coffees which are served in a cafetiere and as there were only two varieties of cake on offer we had one of each. The coffee was very weak and the chocolate, almond and pear cake I had was very dry, my husbands apple crumble cake though was delicious. The girl then came back and sat at the table she had been at when we arrived and as there are only 3 small tables very close together and we were the only people in the store, it did make us feel a bit awkward, couldn't really chat about the store or the yarn etc (in saying so, not that my husband really wanted to talk about yarn!) The bill was £9.90 which was a bit pricey for what we actually got and to be honest I wouldn't go back for the cake and coffee bit. The yarn is nice and is very reasonably priced but the atmosphere wasn't really conducive to wandering around having a browse, but maybe that was just today. I would definately go back to buy some yarn and it may be a bit cosier if the cafe area was in the mezzanine level. read more
