I was quite disappointed by my experience here. It was a blustery day when I walked over half an hour to find the shop, so I joked when I walked into the basement space that it was very windy and I had just blown in from my walk. Not a chuckle from the owner or customer seated on the couch looking at pattern books. No problem, I came here for yarn, not to find people to laugh with me about the weather.
The owner didn't greet me or offer any help as I looked around the far end of the small shop. The standard cubes of yarn were fairly standard wools in basic neutral colours, not a lot to catch my eye. It didn't help that many displays were partially blocked by hanging patterns printed out and placed in plastic sleeves. I crossed by the owner to look at the wall of yarn closer to the entrance, and finally heard "are you al'right?" from the owner -- the first acknowledgment of me, the only person moving around the shop, and a basic Scottish grudging version of 'need help?' I said I was fine thanks and kept looking. I'm a yarn tourist on holiday so I was absolutely looking to buy something interesting as a souvenir of my travels. Finally I spotted a lovely blue silk/wool lace-weight blend from England, something I hadn't seen before. I pulled out a ball from a packed cube and held on to it as I looked around for anything else of interest. Deciding to just get two balls of the blue and be on my way, I went back to pull out another ball. I looked at the price posted next to the cube, and decided it was pricey but as I was only getting two balls here it was ok. As the cube was so full, I upset the balance of the rest of the balls of yarn, and had to hold them in place so they wouldn't fall on the floor. Sighing loudly in exasperation, the owner put down her knitting and came over to tell me to let go. I really didn't feel comfortable letting the yarn fall, so I hesitated. She scolded me, "It happens all the time! Let go, just let go! I know how to fix it." Shocked, I let go and a few balls fell. She didn't even want me to help pick them up. I apologized multiple times.
Then the final stunner - I got my two balls of yarn to the till and she said she hadn't had time to update the price, that this yarn was brand new, and it cost more than the price posted. Telling the story later, a friend of mine wondered why the owner was sitting at the till knitting if she had put out new stock and not found time to update the prices. I was almost laughing out loud the whole experience was so ridiculous! read more
