Man, if you love Tintin this is the place for you! They have a small collection of Tintin related stuffs and T-shirts. Not big tho but still something for a Tintin fan girl like me.

Has anyone noticed how samey card shops are getting these days? A lot of them are catching on to the Paper Chase trend or indie whimsy, and consequently end up running the same race. By proxy I expected more of the same from Paper Tiger, but I was pleasantly surprised. What a pretty shop! From the knitted Moomins to the gorgeous decorative wrap, there were so many offerings I've never seen in card shops before. There were some beautiful, shiny, sketchy notebooks that are too pretty to vandalise with notes, and crafty kits to get people started on anything from sewing to doodling! They had some really cute reprinted Ladybird sewing guides, and a number of books ranging from urban stencil slides to step-by-step vintage shopping manuals. If you were locked in the shop with the right materials, you would find enough to occupy you for a week. As well as selling lovely, quirky little gift ideas (such as frighteningly lifelike peanut shaped erasers) Paper Tiger also inspire customers of all ages to get wrapped up in crafty projects. In an age of corporacy and commerciality, businesses (especially smaller ones) have to clamour over each other to stand out. Paper Tiger trumps the lot by standing out and selling adorable, gorgeous stock for young and old alike. The staff are friendly, its petite and easy to work out, and I have not a bad word to say about it.

Aside from a jazzy interior, cool name and well made cards, Paper Tiger is simply a card shop. Naturally, however flamboyant this review attempts to be, ultimately I'm describing a simple card shop. You are more likely to find a suitable card than the likes of WH Smith here, the hand crafted cards and intricate designs are just that little but more up market that the standards high street names.

I really like Paper Tiger and so it seems do my fellow Edinburgh citizens; this place is a bit of an institution. There is an excellent selection of cards and stationary, with some useless knick knacks like chocolate ladybirds thrown in for good measure (I love useless knick knacks). I have been known to make mad dashes in here on my lunch break to buy birthday cards, it takes no longer than a couple of minutes and I always leave with something quirky and interesting that gets complimented. Paper Tiger knocks the socks off every other purveyor of paper based goods, you need never darken the doorway of Clintons or Hallmark again.

Hello! When did this wee gem spring up?…read more It's not really wee, and it looks new - I'm guessing it's only been on Cockburn Street under a month. Old Town Context is a refreshing, traditional store on Cockburn Street, steering away from the style of the tourist traps on the Royal Mile to offer alternative gift ideas. They have some old English, French and American advert poster art, cards, stationery, gifts, mugs with pin ups on them, clocks made out of recycled glass drinks bottles - a very eclectic and classy selection. Its inspiration is clearly from bygone era's, and I was very impressed with their postcard range. They also have some cracking cards and original prints with cats on them. These cats are wearing kilts and rugby shifrts, quoting Burns and other Scottish poets within the print. It's a very odd idea but entirely up my alley. Overall a very enjoyable shop for the family. It's difficult to walk out of here without buying anything.

In a very different and almost vintage way, it is a souvenir shop. I say that because there were lots of prints, cards, coffee mugs of the city and various British 'things', but they are not the types of souvenirs that you would find in the every single store on the Royal Mile... yeah, you know what I mean. I loved the different prints of the city, my favourite was a very art deco-ish print highlighting the castle in a yellowy-orangish hue against a dark background. They had it as a large print, a card, and a coffee mug. I am now kicking myself that I did not buy it. If you love globes or tin signs, they have loads of them! If you are looking for a different kind of souvenir for someone... or just something for yourself, stop in here because they have some really wonderful items.

This kind of stuff doesn't really float my kind of boat but I did see a really pretty dark wood table at £95 that I quite liked. They stock lots of little accessories such as crystals, jewellery and candles and the staff are really helpful too. The whole shop has a really laid back atmosphere and great for a browse without feeling pressured to buy anything.

Upon entering, there was certainly that free spirited vibe - they were playing the Cocteau Twins and the shop keeper was really relaxed. But that only made for a better browsing experience (and I LOVE the Cocteau Twins so I was happy). Yes, there are loads of carved wooden ornaments and chairs, hanging beads and dream catchers, but there are also some lovely rustic homewares, trendy candles and some truly gorgeous ornate wrapping paper. They have a range of cards and some lovely stuff for the kitchen, including plaid patterned coat hangers and pretty ornaments. So even though it has the 90s hippy vibe, there is more variety than you may think if you care to enter. The shop assistant was absolutely lovely and her laid back approach left me free to browse to my heart's content. I came out with cactus candles which are awesome but too nice to burn!

I noticed they're also started selling clothes - some of them vintage! - on one rail outside the shop and another inside. There's a great selection of candles, cards and other lovely things that would make an excellent gift or treat for yourself. There's an abundance of gift shops to to choose from in the area and, whilst this isn't my first choice, I really enjoy popping in as its a pleasant wee shop to browse and staff always say hello and offer help if you need it. What a sweet little shop!…read more This place caught my eye a few weeks ago, when I stopped dead in my tracks and found myself wandering in to utter: "How much is that Dalek in the window?!" I'm such an adult. The Dalek turned out to be the coolest bubble bath that ever there was and was a sweet price of £7.50. Unfortunately, I hate baths and not even the super cute container could justify my purchase. So I left, knowing that soon, the universe would give me the necessary excuse to buy nerd soap. Enter #SocialMediaSanta. If you're not familiar, this is a very nifty initiative run by Shelter Scotland to give families that otherwise could not afford them, presents for the holiday season. They ask for unwrapped toys and then distribute them throughout the city. You know what is an unwrapped toy? DALEK BUBBLE BATH! Yes, just a week after my window love fest, I found myself gleefully skipping back to this spot to take a Dalek to a nerdy kid in need. Along the way, I realized they stock a ton of other amazing toys - from neat craft kits (paint your own trucks!) to super cute baby bath gloves (the hungry caterpillar! nostalgia bonus!) and everything in between. What started as a one toy purchase turned into fifteen and I swear, I had more fun buying them then the kids who will soon receive them. This place gets a little bonus love from me because the lovely lady behind the till threw in some soap and lotions (for Moms!) free of charge to pay it forward to the folks in Edinburgh. I am the Evil Auntie to two little ones back home, so I dare say i'll be popping back here again to find them unique toys and nerdy giftables, even if it'll cost me a bomb to get them back across the point. But if you have local little ones (or ones on the way!), you should definitely poke your head in here. The prices might be a bit higher then your big box options but the cool factor is worth the price tag.
