The variety of workout machines and free weights make this a decent gym, the additional amenities make it an even better gym. They have lots of programs for all ages and interests. The price is a bit excessive but I'm thankful my work supplements the membership cost. I love how easy the gym is to access and the hours work with my schedule. Having just moved from Hawaii though, I do wish they would turn the temperature up in the weight room. The ladies room is nice and warm, but it's hard to work up a sweat when the weight room is so chilly. read more

The Works sales staff, particularly Doug were completely inept as they could not determine if reasonable accommodation for a wheelchair user would be allowed. Note: I was asking to accompany my wife in the lap lane while she exercises. She needs a little help. Doug lied about if the manager was there who could make a decision. Doug did not listen when we called prior to coming in nor did the staff communicate with each other. Doug was ill prepared for our appointment and wasted our time. I left angry, insulted, and dissatisfied. Seems completely wrong for a gym connected with a hospital. The Works sales staff should be ashamed and Doug needs a new job. Maybe doing lawn maintenance at a graveyard. There, his lack of listening skills would not be noticed. read more

Very overpriced, dated equipment, slow to respond to maintenance issues (if at all). Leadership is inept and out of touch with business. So much wasteful spending; e.g. many screens that have been added are off, many employees sitting at welcome center watching members scan their membership card. Mass General Brigham should be ashamed to operate this facility; although I am not in favor of them requiring the employees to wear masks, it is appalling to see employees improperly wearing their masks with no repercussions. I am VERY happy there have been some recent upgrades to the weight training equipment and free weights. And the reconfiguration in the upstairs cardio room and the updated stretching room have made working out here enjoyable again. ALMOST makes it worth the exorbitant membership fee lol. read more

I have belonged to many gyms over the course of my life - Gold's, Balli, WOW, and some smaller private ones. This is by far the best. They have 3 pools, a large hot tub, and rooms after room of exercise machines. The locker rooms are impeccable (at least the two women's locker rooms are) and have sauna and steam rooms. The staff is very helpful. I see others have complained about the cost, however, I have paid almost as much at FAR less superior gyms. For all that you get, including an outside pool area that rivals any great resort, I think it is a fantastic deal. read more

My wife and I were members for a year before we had our kids. The facilities are great. In fact they just expanded and added 2 new pools and a ton of new features. Our biggest fault is with the pricing and the service/attitude of the people who register you. The place is very expensive and they seem to nickel and dime you for everything on top of that (especially if you have kids). They offer a daycare that they charge you for and they even on top of it require you to pay monthly dues for infants. Apparently the tiny space they take up in the pool with you holding them is worth $10 a month (given that you can't really do anything else there with a 3 month old). The administrative people we have talked to have been outright rude on 2 occasions that we were potentially going to get family memberships. On both occasions we walked out without getting one. If they weren't the only game in town with a daycare and a pool we wouldn't even consider going back. They even say on their website: " Where else can you bring your family for less than $4.00 per day that offers a lap pool, outdoor and indoor aquatic centers..." What they don't say is by "family" they mean you and your spouse provided you don't try to do any extra classes (more than half of which requires an additional fee). read more

This place is a ripoff. The monthly rate is over 60$ a month to join. All of the equipment is extremely outdated and never cleaned. When I went to cancel my membership they charged me 40$ to cancel. None of these fees were explained when I signed on. This place is a scam, join planet fitness and save your money because this place is not worth it. read more

This place is absolutely unethical. Its the epitome of the crooked 80's gym with the "used car salesman" mentality to do anything to lock you into a contract. No mention of the commitment during the tour or the sales pitch, didnt see it on the website either. You can lease a car for the price they ask for a family membership, even with the so called discount with associated workplaces. Wentworth Douglass Hospital should be ashamed of themselves to run such an unethical place. The staff also has a stuck up, holier than thou attitude and just plain refuses to answer certain questions, just says that's the way it is. I went to the Works as a kid and now go here over college holiday break, as this is the only time I live in the area. I mostly train for rowing so I use the only erg (rowing machine) that they have. This and a sauna is all that I really need, so for that reason, I'm pretty satisfied. The sauna in the men's locker room is a little out of date, and could use better temperature control, but overall it's fine. The works is clean and the staff is friendly. Membership is also quite reasonable. For example, as a college student it was only $30/ month for me. While I usually go for the specific reason of rowing training, there are many many great features I don't utilize. There are lots of group fitness class, swimming pools, a small water park for children, squash courts, and more. I definitely recommend the Works. read more

I just today canceled my membership after several years belonging to The Works. This is a hard review for me to write because I think it's a very nice, clean gym but I have to nock down some stars due to the price, way, way, way too expensive. I guess if you use the pools and hit lots of classes you can somehow justify paying almost $60/month. Try not to be upset about the 15 year old, paying way less, that is fooling around on the bike you want. Just ignore the fact that everyone who works at any area hospital is paying much less than you. Be a sport and smile when you are kicked out of the downstairs cardio room because it's time for "Young At Heart", you know those elderly paying much, much less than you, to exercise. read more

Took a swim here last night. Not much to say other than that for the expensive $15 day fee I paid, I wasn't provided a towel. Ok, that's lame. But wait... I asked to rent one, and was informed they only SELL used gym towels. FOR $3.50. I was stuck without a towel, so I had to fall in line. They handed me a clearly well-used, much-laundered rag. I suggested that this policy was outrageous, and the sassy teenager who was taking my card offered, in all her many years of wisdom and travel, that gym's don't offer towels for rental. Oh really? How about my $15/MONTH gym down the road that offers FREE towels? I agree with the first review. This place has Greenwich prices in a part of the world where the average joe is more, well, PA steel town. So much competition, I wonder if "The Works" only works because of federal grants or other subsidies. (The Works is a part of the local hospital system.) If so, unfair to the cheaper, better facilities nearby. read more

My BF and I are staying at the local Homewood Suites for the next 4-6 months, when we found out that we would be able to get passes to the gym we wanted to check it out. For the past three months we had been going to the Greenleaf Seacoast Sportsclub where we played racquetball 4 to 7 times a week, for 90 min each session. So when we checked into the Homewood we grabbed passes and just wanted to check out their courts. Hearing from people this is a premier place, I was excited. Walked in, explained to the two people up front we wanted to just look around, explaining we had passes from our hotel. We were immediately passed to "membership." The lady was happy to give us a tour showing us the only three shabby looking racquetball courts and proceed to ask us not once, not twice not three, but FOUR times "so you wont be paying." Each time the conversation grew more awkward. It went from here's what you can do, to here what you can't do. Now I'm not sure if her position was built on commission and I do understand that she could've felt we were wasting her time BUT we didnt hide the fact we had passes. My overall impression of this place was they do offer a lot but for the prices she was telling us, things shouldn't look like they were so rundown. We asked about the availability of the courts and we were told we pretty much would not be able to play since we were non-members and could not reserve, we could only "wait to see." A few days later we came to play, more or less to see if we could even get in a court. We walk in. All courts available. The kid up front ask if we have a time reserved. Um wait, were holding passes and not members and now you ask if we have a reserved time?! I almost flipped and popped out kittens. He looks and see there no one on the schedule and we are permitted to enter a court. The weird, creepy part the rooms are viewable which made it hard to concentrate when I'm watching and being watched by Grandma Moses eating her egg salad sandwich, or kids pressing their snotty noses to glass.. The floors were in desperate need of stripping of all that wax, and the walls looked like they had seen better days.. five years ago. Knowing there had been no one scheduled, I stated to see a few people lining up to play. (I guess if they weren't more interested in that water park out back they would've thrown in a few more courts). I found this extremely irritating. I guess I'm just a bit self conscience since I'm a new player but damn! After 30 minutes of a bit of a loose game I wanted to haul ass out of there. All in all I guess you get what you pay for. I'm glad we get in for free. I would never pay the fee for that dump. read more

I love this gym, I'm not sure who the other reviewers have been talking to, but I personally find the staff to be super friendly, the people at the front desk know my name and even take time to get to know me and my interests. The facilities are clean, and very well maintained, I find them to be far nicer and cleaner than any other gyms that I have been to (I travel a lot so I've been to quite a few) There is a nice variety of serious fitness enthusiasts and regular people, giving the gym a genuine vibe. I love yoga and find their yoga classes to be way more than just "gym yoga" and the other classes that I have taken are also high quality and motivating. The Works isn't cheap, but it offers drastically more than any of the purple and yellow gyms do. When you think about it the monthly fee is less than most people would spend for dinner and drinks for two at a halfway descent restaurant....Give me the gym over expensive food any day! read more

This gym is very clean, has daycare , 2 pools etc. My issue is not with the gym itself, but with the classes and the cost of the gym memberships. First of all, almost any of the pool workout classes are almost impossible to get into. Especially the "deep water". You have to call a day in advance to reserve your spot and if you are lucky enough to get in, there isn't enough room for everyone to be in the deep part of the pool, thus missing out on most of the exercise. If you try and use the pool on your own you are overrun with family's and children, not easy to exercise in. (They should build a strictly family pool) The indoor track is poorly neglected. The membership pricing is almost criminal. I found out 2 years into my membership that there are HUGE pricing differences and several different memberships that they NEVER inform you about until you try and cancel. There is a pool only membership, that I found out from someone who was using the pool. When I inquired about it I was bascily lied to and my questions diverted. There is also a special membership for those receiving Physical therapy at WDH (didn't know about that one either), which we would have qualified for. There are also several other levels of membership that are not told up front. Trying to get a membership there was like trying to buy a used car.(Smoke and mirrors). It used to cost my family (with a discount) $125 month for membership. This was myself, my husband, a newborn (whom I also had to pay for the gym daycare for), a 6 year old , whom could only use the pool and an 11 year old. Out of my entire family the only people that were able to use the gym (besides the pool, which wasn't used often) was me and my husband. We could go to PF for $20! I am also awaiting on two refunds. One for a canceled day camp trip (canceled by the works) and one for prepaid day care I never used. Its been awhile and several calls and still no refund. Couple the price with the lack of space in the classes , just wasn't worth it. read more

The Works used to be a fun place to work out and play. In the last few years it has become about rules. Everywhere you look there is a rule posted to remind you not to do x, y or z. It seems silly but when the "no diving" rule was added that was the last straw...sigh. read more

Great gym... until you try to stop membership. Moved to Florida over a year ago and still haven't been able to get them to stop charging me for membership. Stopped in to cancel membership before I left... no one available at that time... made several phone calls... emailed them.. and here I am... still paying...apparently they must feel a 3 hour flight is no reason not to use their gym... read more

I started a membership, very impressed with the appearance of the gym. I became dissatisfied with several things. Especially with the "preschool" which is really a glorified utility closet. It is in a very small room, containing several mops and full mop buckets, a couple of mats (seated next to the mops) for children to play on, and a small table for kids to have snack. I decided that I was spending too much money on a membership I wasn't happy with and wrote to inform them that I wished to cancel my membership. I was given a sales pitch to "suspend" my membership for four months. During those four months I would be billed $15 instead of $94 and then after those four months, my membership would resume along with the $94/month payments. I reminded Doug Eason that I wasn't interested in maintaining my membership and that it wasn't about the money, but if it was, that $15 to not use the gym is more than an active membership with full personal training at Planet Fitness. At this point, he stopped responding altogether. I clearly stated that I was withdrawing my consent to automatically withdraw money from my account and, again, got no response. Normally fees are withdrawn on the fifth. So, I was surprised when I saw that the fees were withdrawn on the first of the next month. I emailed Doug again and told him that if the money was not returned to my account, I would file a complaint with my bank and with the BBB. Again, I got no response. I waited one week and then filed a complaint with my bank. On the eighth, I found that The Works had withdrawn the membership dues for a second time in one week. Totaling $188 for one month after I withdrew consent to automatically withdraw funds. I have now filed a second complaint with my bank and a complaint with the BBB. My advice is to look elsewhere. The pools are beautiful, but no one is ever on duty and the slides are almost never open. The rooms are massive and often house very little workout equipment. The childcare room is okay, but directly beneath the big weights room. The "preschool" is not a "preschool". read more
