Vegan burger

Nice neighborly pub in Bermondsey (and on Bermondsey). Be advised you need to order at the bar and let them know where you're sitting for them to run out your food. I had the vegan burger with fries which was really good, fries were hot and crisp. I don't think they have WiFi.

A very different proposal compared to The Garrison, more laid back I would say and possibly more stylish. The combination of the old with the new is quite refreshing to see in a pub. Their pub food is what it is, pub food, but would recommend their Lebanese inspired dishes, or even their chips to go alongside your lager. It tends to be crowded most of the time, and although the roofed beer garden is great, it is very difficult to find a table (when it's not raining). I discovered this place when I was invited to a function to celebrate a friends book launch. The staff was always very attentive and the nibbles were great, I specially recall the samosas. The distinct decoration of the room always stuck to mind, very heavily designed, but unique. The conclusion? Once you go to the Woolpack, you will keep on coming.

The Woolpack located on Bermondsey Street in SE1 is a kitsch and charming little pub. With a stylish, dark and theatrical interior this is where the old meets the modern. With Victorian tiles, 60s wall papers and a Baroque style function room, The Woolpack is eclectic and unique without trying too hard. The decked beer garden is great on those rare British occasions when the sun is shining. Many pubs don't tend to consider the toilets as part of the decor but the toilets here are reminiscent of a backstage theatre with lights surrounding the mirrors. It is also great for a bite to eat; serving good pub grub at a not too expensive (but not too cheap) price. Attracting all manner of folk and an array of weird and wonderful haircuts, The Woolpack has a lovely atmosphere and really gives that 'local pub' vibe. At the bar itself, an imaginative selection of continental lagers are the order of the day including 'Bishops Finger'. I instead, safely opted for a dry white wine.

With a wonderfully rustic blend of dark wooden furniture, vintage-style decoration and comfortable booth seating, The Woolpack creates an atmosphere of laid-back sophistication and relaxation. It's the sort of place that makes you wish you smoked a pipe. The punters here reflect the chilled out vibe making for a relaxing but cheerful environment. Though not one for a wild occasion this is certainly an ideal destination for a drink and a chat of a weekday evening. Though the menu is not quite as impressive as that of its close neighbour The Garrison, The Woolpack certainly packs in the flavour with a small but well-balanced selection of European dishes which are big on taste whilst being light on your pocket. Sadly the drinks selection is a little dissapointing and you'll struggle to find anything particularly adventurous or out of the ordinary.

Well, this looks a bit dark. Sunday roast beef £15

They serve amazing Sunday brunch! I came here to meet up with some friends that were visiting. We had reserved half of the 2nd floor. Food: We went for the roast dinner on Sunday which was superb. I ordered the beef roast and I devoured it within minutes. At £15 it wasn't a bad deal (considering I paid £14 at the Harvester a few days before). The roast dinner had all the trimmings: roast potatoes, steamed kale and veggies, pork and sage stuffing, and yorkshire pudding. My friends swore the pork loin and chicken roast was equally good. I wasn't a fan of the mulled punch though. I found it slightly watered down. Atmosphere: The place was rather big, The restaurant had a backyard, and plenty of seats on the ground floor. However, it being winter, black wallpaper isn't the best. I found myself trying to keep myself awake as soon as the sun came down. The large mirrors and candles did nothing to brighten up the room.

Bermondsey Street behind London Bridge is unexpectedly glamorous. It's home to a bunch of pubs and shops that are worth visiting. The Woolpacker is perhaps the most attractive. It has a fairly large downstairs and a garden outside, mainly used by smokers. The décor is fairly standard for a vaguely scrubbed up pub. I remember coming a few years back and thinking it was pretty sharp, but over the years it has dulled. It has a pretty vibrant atmosphere, and is popular with the after-work crowd. The last time I visited we went upstairs which is cosier, has kept its gloss and is rather romantic. The selection of draught and bottled beers is decent, and the wine and spirit section is pretty good too. There is also food, which I have not tried, but looks like fairly standard gastro pub fair.

Good cheap pub food, good day drinking place in astro turf outside area. Inflexible opening hours (closes at 11pm) and pretentious staff.

While you can hang out in the crowd and grab a pint easily without that, if you want to dine in the quieter dining area with views of the water you may want to do so as well. Especially if you want the elbow room to enjoy such great food. The Mayflower is named after the famous ship carrying the early American settlers, and the church tied to this voyage is steps away where apparently an unmarked grave hosts the resting spot of the captain of that ship. It's candlelit and kind of romantic on the top floor with great views. For food, my wife had the chicken pie and I had the special of the day, lamb stew with housemade potato salad. It was warm, flavorful and delicious, sentiments my wife shared on the pot pie. We split an order of mac and cheese, and it was also delicious. Such great comfort food. I had a small scotch pour and an ale, my wife a glass of wine. I had a small port to pair with the sticky toffee pudding at the end which was terrific. My wife swears by Gordon Ramsey's recipe of the same but this one was hard to beat IMO.

The bartender let us know that while the sign read food was served upstairs only, they were under construction so food would be served downstairs in the main pub area instead--but not until 5 (it was around 4:30 pm). We thanked him and decided to grab a drink and wait for food service. The menu of house ales, lagers, bitters, etc. + spirits was one I later saw at 1-2 other pubs who must share the same brewery. I tried a couple of beers and both were great. My wife had a cocktail which she enjoyed. The most noticeable thing at first was how quiet this pub is-- you could hear a pin drop. This likely changes later in the evening, but without music playing and the scattered patrons softly chatting at their tables, it was very quiet. Which really worked for us as we fought jet lag. We ordered food at the bar, my wife had fish and chips and I had the sausage and mash platter topped with onion rings. Both were delicious and fairly priced. This was all in all a great first pub to visit in London.

Before I go on, I have to thank the staff for allowing us to be seated because the restaurant was fully booked yet they managed to squeeze us in. The steak was tender, rich, and slow-cooked to perfection, packed with deep, savory flavor from the ale. Every bite was hearty and comforting -- exactly what you want when you're in London. The gravy was silky and robust, perfect for dipping those thick-cut chips, which were golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It also came with fresh greens, roasted tomatoes, and crispy onion rings that added great texture and balance to the dish. You can tell this is proper pub food done right -- no shortcuts, just bold, satisfying flavor. If you're looking for a classic, filling English meal that absolutely delivers, this is it. Charles Dickens visited the site when it was a coffee house and it's mentioned in Little Dorrit. But the real reason to visit is for the food. This is your place if you're looking for authentic fish 'n chips--they're fresh, lightly battered and perfectly fried without being greasy. I also had the mac 'n cheese which used real vintage/sharp cheddar--and a lot of it--excellent! So you'll get good food while enjoying a historic inn where, for hundreds of years, travelers changed horses, got food, drink, and lodging before the railway era. IMPORTANT TIP: You order food at the bar--but you will need a table number. So you'll need someone in your party to sit at a table in the adjoining room.
