First a creek bed, then a foot path, horse trail, carriage route, & now an official bike route. Starting in 2012 those green signs on the black top sprung up. During the following 10 years the route has been slowly improved for bicyclist safety. There's a long way to go. After the guy at American Cyclery told me about the wiggle, I couldn't wait to try it. He mentioned it was by my apartment, but I had never heard or seen such a thing. Immediately after purchasing my bike, I went on a mission to find this elusive wiggle... I was surprised to discover that The Wiggle picks up not even a block from my apartment. The are even cute little signs that say The Wigggle and a wide, clearly defined bike path! I hopped on, excited and a bit nervous- where will this lead me? I was immediately surrounded by other bikers, and now more confident with safety in numbers (and riding in SF, this is a *good* thing), I RODE. I live in The Duboce Triangle. For my 100th yelp review I wanted to review somewhere special, somewhere that I held near and dear to my heart. I thought for a few minutes and then I knew: the wiggle. Anyone who knows me well knows one thing (or has been told by yours truly): I LOVE the wiggle. I worked an internship in San Francisco this past summer, and purchased a bicycle after the first week. Living in the Lower Haight I would gleefully speed to work each day, enjoying divided bike lanes and the company of friendly fellow bicycle commuters. Only one thing filled my heart with dread. At the end of each day I would bike back up Market St. to Octavia, before dismounting and walking my single speed, once described "hybrid kid/power ranger" bicycle up six blocks of Page St. Needless to say, I have scars on my legs to demonstrate how successful this was. This carried on for about two weeks before, while questioning the cause of my recklessly abused shins, my coworker Joel enlightened me as to the greatest problem solving path ever, the wiggle. So here I will leave my due thanks. My dear Wiggle, You are everything I ever wanted in a bicycle path. Not only did you completely change my life, you made me feel as though I was part of a special San Francisco club (though apparently everyone else already was in it). It astonishes me that there is only 1 other review of The Wiggle! Taking the flat streets from the Mission through the Pan Handle out to Ocean Beach is one of my favorite bike rides. I've heard there are actual signs that say "The Wiggle," but I never see them. I usually follow the white painted biker icons down the different streets--the newer ones have adorable little bike helmets--or I just tail other bikers. I love it when there's a big group of Wigglers, and we take over the streets with our Wiggle Power. More tips/info on going from the Mission to the ocean: - Take 18th to Church instead of 17th so you avoid that tangle of Muni tracks - Say hello to the buffalo when you near the ocean but don't suddenly screech to a halt and then fall over because you forgot that your feet were in the cages - There's a public restroom at the Beach Chalet, as well as a fabulous semi-new ground-level beer garden that has live music on the weekends. - Round-trip is usually just under 2 hours (including brief ocean gazing and bathroom break) if you're a laid-back but in-shape biker like me. read more

Let's face it, this is a bike path. I think "local flavor" is taking things a little far. As a cyclist, I can honestly say it's pretty mundane. It's a bike path that, for the most part, is not even a separate lane. As a pedestrian who lives on The Wiggle I loath the 90% of cyclists in this city who don't give a shit if anyone around them lives or dies, and who are too entitled to even slow down for a stop sign. As a motorist (who also lives on The Wiggle) I am surprised that said cyclists also don't give a shit about their own lives. I can only deduce that long-term The Wiggle usage leads to suicidal and sociopathic tendencies, and therefore I would not recommend it. read more

I actually thought I'd discovered this great bicycle route on my own about 4 years ago, after the first few times I'd tried riding between my place in the Sunset and my favorite biking destinations across town. It was like my own little preciously guarded secret bike path. Imagine my surprise to find out just the other day that not only does this route have a name, but there's actually signs posted along the route in green and white designating it thusly. I was a bit wary about "the wiggle" -- I first heard about it from my hard-core bike-riding hipster friends, and quite honestly, I was fearful. Let's talk about my equipment, shall we? I have a Schwinn Jaguar "7-speed" cruiser (heard of it? didn't think so). "7-speed" is in quotes because it's actually 1 speed. The other 6 are just for show. In short, I'm not riding a $3,000 bike that weighs 10oz. I'm on a clunky beast with a wire basket on the front and a rusty bell that used to have a sticker that read, "I love bikes." Needless to say, I was fearful. Bike-riding hipsters can be tricky. Easy for them (these are people that do crazy things like play bike polo) probably means hard for me. The fact that I'm writing this means that I survived. The wiggle must have been God-sent for the normal bike-riding masses like myself. It was, dare I say, EASY. Child's play, if you will. Instead I took McAllister all the way up until my leg muscles screamed in agony. I'm sorry guys, I wish I had known. I know now. So now I don't have an excuse to give my friends when they want me to go up to the Inner Sunset from the Mission to "hang in their 'hood". Always be careful entering from Market St as the combination of railroad tracks and cars are a bit tricky. You cannot go wrong with making the first right, first left, first right, first left, (or something like that) and drop into Scott to Fell. But be careful, as of December 1st, they are doing construction right at the corner of an intersection. If you're not careful, you'll bike into a construction vehicle (like I almost did). read more

After rescuing my mom's super 70's Centurion from the depths of the garage and getting it all tuned up, my sweet baby and I have been going on all kinds of romantic bike rides! Now granted, I am an ice cream eatin' fiend, so I've been getting used to my gears and slowly building up my endurance. On Saturday, after multiple days of laying around in a post-new years coma, we decided it was time to venture out and get some air! Angel Tits suggested 'The Wiggle". I have to say, I was a bit intimidated, since I had really only been riding up and down the relatively flat Valencia area. She assured me that the reason why this path was so fantastic was that its a mostly flat way of getting up to the Panhandle/GGP/Haight area from the good ole Mission. I decided to go for it! Despite a few huffs and puffs from my out-of-shape self, I thought it was pretty easy! We cruised on through the Panhandle, through part of GGP, and over into the 9th and Irving area. Back down, its all down hill and super fun! I will definitely be using the Wiggle as a means of getting to many parts of the city! read more

I love the wiggle!! It makes getting to the Park a breeze! Plus there's a silent sense of camaraderie between you and all the other wigglers. However, I'd like to point out my newest use for the Wiggle: a great jogging route! I live in Hayes Valley, so while plotting a route, I thought of the different directions. The mission is relatively flat, but full of drunk yuppies grabbing dinner, and hipsters blowing smoke in your face. Towards the Haight is nothing but steep-ass hills. Civic center is rather un-scenic. And going north is okay for a little until you start tangling with Pac-Heights: no thank you. Then one day it hit me: the wiggle! I walk up the Lower Haight hill which is actually a decent warmup, then it's all relatively flat. And once I get into the Panhandle, it's just like the perfect environment for a jog. Probably why there's so many other joggers there! read more

The wiggle is great, but unbeknownst to most, there's also something I call the Sunset wiggle! Starting from Kezar and 3rd Ave, proceed down 3rd Ave, right at Irving, left at 6th, right at Judah, left at 12th, right at Kirkham, left at 17th, right at Quintara. From Quintara, it's smooth sailing whether you want to head to the resevoir or down to Stonestown. Most people will find this route too hilly but it's the best way I know to go home which is in the Outer Sunset! read more

First time biking from downtown to Golden Gate park and man the wiggle was so convenient and easy! Thanks San Francisco, I really felt like you love your bicyclists! The signs are very clear on which route to take. There are green arrows on the road that direct you where to go. I would recommend reading up on the route beforehand though so you at least have a knowledge of it. Not many hills at all so that was great. Biking through the panhandle of Golden Gate park, then on to the park..and went all the way to Ocean beach. Bike back to our apartment downtown and that was quite a workout. Made a brief stop at Alamo Square on the way back.. which I highly recommend because it is gorgeous, offers beautiful views of the city. (Just don't bike up the hill leading to the park.. it's steep and doesn't look bike-able at all!) Other than that, I'll be wiggling again very soon! read more

I've been going on Page Street and I REALLY like it. I think it gives me more exercise because of that 1 hill at Divisadero and it seems safer especially since it's getting darker now. read more

I thought it would be a mustache that made me feel like a man...but its not. The Wiggle makes me feel like a man. It is a great way to start the day and wiggle downtown on the easy slope. Coming home to the Sunset can be slow but, very rewarding when I blast through it without stopping for a break. Come feel these legs, really, been wiggling for two months, now they are pistons. Well first of all I would appreciate any feedback from people that are familiar with the Wiggle to help me out. My gf and I were staying at the Park Central Hotel on 3rd and Market. We had out complimentary bikes provided to us from the hotel which was basically a standard orange 7 speed beach cruiser type bike. I used google maps for directions to GGP. I wish I would have known about the Wiggle because I believe that my GF and I went through unnecessary torture getting to GGP. This is how we did it....we went South on Market to I believe it was Page St. Then it was all uphill from there with a particularly high grade uphill to I believe it was Scott st. Then we turned left to Fell then hit the panhandle. I'm guessing that taking the Wiggle would have made it easier? Please help. Because based on the map, I would have had to go farther down Market St to access the Wiggle! Or could I have access the Wiggle from the way I went originally?? read more
