They have two mini tables for two that are maybe 23 inches wide. Even though there were other tables available, we were seated at one of these child size tables. After being seated and waiting some time a server that wasn't our server noticed us and asked if anyone has come by. had to ask for a server. There is something wrong with their math. Do Not tip based on the receipt suggestion!!!! Here is an example. My family and I have been coming here for over 20 years now, so we are obviously fans of this restaurant's food. However, there have been some changes that have been made within the restaurant that are petty and a tad ridiculous. One example of that is if you dine in the restaurant and you order a soft drink and at the end of your meal, you ask for a drink to-go; they charge you $1. Or, if you simply ask for a cup so you can pour the remainder of your drink into the cup, they charge you $1. Now, $1 is practically nothing realistically, but that's exactly the point I'm trying to make. Prices are already high in this economy, so charging that extra $1 is like a slap in the face at the end of the meal after we've already paid a lot for the soft drink to begin with. I have spoken with my family, some of the regular customers, and some of the staff at the restaurant, and we have all collectively stated how dumb the new to-go drink rule is. I'm hopeful that the rule will be revoked because it leaves a bad taste in all of our mouths. Secondly, I have ordered chicken tortilla soup from the to-go window multiple times in the past several months because it's my favorite soup in Orange County. If you haven't had their chicken tortilla soup, you're missing out on the best soup ever. The only problem I have is that whenever I get home and open the soup, there are one or two strands of chicken in it. I've ordered it in the restaurant and told my server that there's hardly any chicken, and the server has taken it back to have the cooks put more shredded chicken in it. I can't do that once I'm home (obviously), and it's frustrating because I paid my hard earned money for CHICKEN tortilla soup that has practically no chicken. I have loved ones who worked at The Whole Enchilada several years ago now, so I know the soup gets brought out in the morning and placed in the warming station and then a plate of shredded chicken gets brought out and dumped in. I don't know if the host/server doesn't mix the soup up enough in the morning, or the soup doesn't get replenished with enough chicken throughout the day, but it seems like this restaurant is stingy with their chicken and to-go cups. I'd also like to say that we can sometimes see the busboys getting chips out of the warmer they are kept in, and there is one busboy in particular named Humberto, that doesn't use a scooper to put chips in the basket. He uses his dirty hands to scoop chips, and that's disgusting because we have seen him pick up dirty plates, use a dirty rag to wipe up dirty tables, and THEN walk over to the chip drawer/warmer and use his hands to scoop chips for customers. On days that he works I choose not to eat the chips (which is sad because I love your chips and salsa), because I don't know what kind of germs have been spread across the chips. Lastly, THE FISH TANK. My loved ones that worked here several years ago told me the horror stories behind the fish tank. This restaurant goes through fish like they go through salsa. I don't know who they source their fish from, and who is in charge of maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy environment for the fish, but they suck. I know that sounds harsh, but I feel so bad for every fish that enters their fish tank because it's practically sending them to their death. My loved ones told me where the fish food gets stored, and I'd like to warn all of you not to get any of the seafood items on the menu, as well as don't get any mud pies. Good flautas are hard to find. Ever since getting addicted to them with DeAnn at her local burger & Mexican joint, I've spent a lot of years looking for a decent and not terribly expensive restaurant to indulge in my addiction. The Whole Enchilada has some pretty good flautas. Chunky with beef, soft and supple fried flour tortilla, and everything covered in chile verde, cheese, and sour cream. Every bite pretty much rocked and brought back memories of that Phelan local hangout with them. The service was good. The server took my order fast, got my order back to the table fast, and got my refill to me fast. The only slowdown was my trying to get my check and then waiting for someone to run my credit card. Both of those took far too long for a dining room that wasn't all that busy. However, my biggest complaint was the idiotic policy to charge a dollar for all to-go containers according to my server. I only wanted a to-go cup for my root beer that was only 3/4 full. I hate wasting soda but I didn't feel like drinking any more of it. So I did what I did everywhere else and ask for a cup for me to take it home. That's when I was told it would cost me a $1 added to the bill. Not for more root beer, not for something extra for the meal, and not something they didn't already plan for--this was for the soda I had already started to drink and theoretically was useless to anyone else. I shudder to think if I'd left any of my flautas on the plate. They probably would have charged for the to-go box and the bag. This is the kind of nickel-and-diming that of ruins meals. The ambience was alright. It reminds of that Islands vibe with everyone in Hawaiian shirts and open air arrangement to the room. It would be a nice place to hang. In short I loved the flautas but I abhorred the making me feel like I was a freak for not wanting to shoot the rest of my 20 oz. drink like it was whiskey at a bachelor party or else pay an extra charge. Hmmm. I'm confused on this one. The food was so bland and lackluster. I just don't get it. The food looks appealing. They make it look like it would taste really good. Then you bite into it, and it's like where is the flavor??? So, I'm Caucasian and my husband is Hispanic. He likes spice and lots of flavor in his food. He couldn't even eat this Mexican food lol That is saying a lot, I think. I was able to eat the cheese enchiladas, but they were not my favorite. Maybe they needed some salt? There was a good amount of cheese, just no flavor. It was very odd. My eyes were telling me, "It should taste good." My taste buds said, "what are we even eating." I love this place. It's a bit of a drive for me be the food is terrific! The classic chips and salsa are great. My last trip there the salsa was perfect. One of my favorites. I also had a taco with shredded beef which was outstanding. Very nostalgic of Mexican Restaurants north of the border. I also had a Chili Relleno and a green chicken tamale. I can't wait to return. My family wanted to visit on an early Saturday evening for dinner. The restaurant was busy, loud, and understaffed; however, I enjoyed my food. We had complementary chips and salsa and got more upon request after we finished our first round. From the mas especiales part of the menu, I got Joaquina's chicken mole, which included Spanish rice, frijoles de la olla, and corn tortillas. It would've been nice to know what ingredients the mole consisted of because it tasted quite delicious with a great blend of savory and sweet flavors. The texture reminded me of curry, which I enjoyed. However, it could've used more rice compared to the amount of chicken portioned. While the beans tasted fine (albeit a little bland), I wished they were refried instead. I'd order it the next time if I come back, and my family also liked it. We also got the steak & shrimp fajitas, which came with flour or corn tortillas. Instead of having two tortilla warmers, we all shared one. As dinner service continued, it got more difficult to get our server's attention due to the restaurant getting busier. I think we arrive at 5:30 PM and by time we left there was a line out the door, and this was a Thursday. We were greeted at our table in a reasonable time with drink orders taken. As we were there with my son, too young grandchildren, the staff took the children's orders first so their meals would come out quickly. Portions of food are plentiful. I ordered a plate of authentic chili relleno which was very good and came with traditional beans and rice. My wife had a fajita platter and she took half of it home, a portion was that big. We tried this place for the first time as we had an event at Cal State Fullerton. We were seated promptly and immediately was served two bowls of chips and salsa. One of the guests on our table likes spicy salsa so he immediately brought another bowl of spicier salsa. Our server Connor was very friendly, attentive and professional. I had a crispy chicken taco that was delicious- stuffed with cheese, tomato and lettuce. I We also tried a albondiga soup that had good flavor. The salsa that they put on the table was very mild and flavorful. My husband had the seafood enchiladas and he highly recommends them. I happened to see this mexican restaurant, while at a store across the street. I figured that I would give it a try and order some take out. I am glad I did because the food was very good. I didnt have to wait long and their take out window outside was really organized. The woman at the window was friendly and the food was still warm when we arrived home. I've never had a complaint about this place...until tonight. My friend and I ordered the chicken enchilada suizas which we've had before and it was great. The description says that they are "covered in suizas sauce." Neither one of us had ANY sauce; it was just way too much very dry chicken and while there was cheese and sour cream, the enchiladas were not hot. Did we complain?
