To paraphrase what my wife said on Facebook: " I quite like this hotel. It's run by a family and…read morethey are so proud of everything. In fact, the current owner grew up in the basement of the house! The mosaic tiles around the reception window, the inspirational plaques in rustic wood focused on kindness, the small art prints of small London moments that float on the wall above the handrail that winds up the narrow staircase, the newly refurbished hotel kitchen (Try our new toasties for an afternoon snack! We will bring you your choice of breakfast to your own room! ), and the bathroom toiletries-highest London quality! It won't ever win awards for class, but on the friendly and clean scale, they are winners. Two blocks away is a grimy looking street (in all fairness, a LOT of London and Paris score extremely high on the grimy scale) full of people shopping at tiny stores of all kinds--Turkish markets, hot nuts (delivered !), locks, phones, phone repair, clothing stores, fabric stores, and more Turkish restaurants than I've ever seen. Last night's dinner was at one of those. Walking back in the dark we could see the ragged looking apartments above the commercial properties lining the street. Real life in London, away from the tourist center." When we left we left with hugs from the owner. If you're looking for a place to stay that's about 20 minutes from the center of London and won't cost you an arm and a leg, the United Lodge Hotel is a winner!

We stayed in this aparthotel next to Finsbury Park last month with two more couples. The location…read moreis as good at it can be. It is an easy 5 minutes walk to Manor House underground station and less than 5 to 15 minutes from anywhere in Central London. It is less than 10 minutes tube ride to King's Cross St. Pancras for people who want to catch Eurostar and pop out to Paris or Brussels. Similarly it is a straight Picadilly line to the Heathrow Airport Terminals making it easy for the first time visitors to London, like two of our friends who had no trouble getting to the hotel. Last but not least, the staff is brilliant and made us feel welcome by entertaining all our requests from the time we stepped inside till we stepped out. I think for a new hotel, they are doing brilliant job! Our room was very comfortable, spacious, warm, modern and had all the facilities we needed. They gave us water bottle, tea/coffee making material, breakfast cereals etc in a fully equipped kitchen with oven, stove, miscrowave, etc. The toilet/bathroom was clean. We enjoyed our stay and are returning in April for the Arsenal vs Liverpool match at Arsenal Stadium which is only 5 minutes from the hotel! We didn't get chance to explore Finsbury Park and enjoy the green spaces around the hotel as the weather was cold. Hopefully it will be better this time!

What is more, the position of the house is amazing. It is not far away from central London. And you can find tube station within 10 minutes by walking. Another good alternative is buses. There are more than 15 different buses near this house that will take you to wherever you want. The house is pretty and very clean. I was happy that I can use the kitchen free. The bathroom is always clean, because the host---James clean it every day. I am very happy with my experience in Woodville guesthouse. The host was very nice and with great hospitality. He cooks very well....to be honest I do miss his food......:-) My trip in London was perfect not only because of the view but also James and his guesthouse. To be honest with every one who will see my review, this guesthouse worth more than the price it charges. After all, highly recommend this place to every one and believe me it will become one of your best experiences in London......

I think this is a great place to stay if you want to explore London on a budget, but don't want to…read moregive up comfort and privacy. The host rents out 3 rooms in his house, and you have full access to the kitchen and the bathroom. I really liked the arrangement because I could cook me own meals and save some money on eating out. The facilities were clean and well-maintained. The host, James, was very helpful and considerate. He is also very knowledgeable of London, so make sure to ask him for sightseeing suggestions. He is also very smart and pleasant to talk to. Definitely talk to him about art :) The house is situated in Walthamstow, one of the London suburbs. It's a nice neighborhood, there is a huge street market working on High street, so you can get, for example, fruits or other food for cheap. There are also at least three large supermarkets on High street, some pubs and restaurants if you don't cook or prefer eating out. Despite the presence of tha market I didn't have any problems with security, even when I came back late at night. The streets are well lit, there are police patrols, so it indeed feels quite safe. Walthamstow central station is within a 15-minute walking distance. There's a Victoria line Tube station there as well as buses and trains (I've never used the latter). The Underground will take you to King's Cross in 25 minutes and to Victoria Station in 40. The trains go every 3-7 minutes, but, unfortunately, I've found the London Underground to be quite unreliable, e.g. the service is disrupted sometimes -- but that is the problem you will have to face if you're staying in the suburbs (and a lot of other hostels and rentals are situated in the suburbs too). The buses are more reliable but take more time to reach London. There are night buses that run all night and you can use them if you're coming back late (the underground closes at 11pm). Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Woodville Guesthouse. It's a really good alternative to staying at a hotel if you're traveling on a budget.

Epping Forest

Epping Forest is a beautiful little gem of a place. It is the largest city forest in Europe and you…read morecan easily get lost in the wonder that is a mere 30 mins from central London. The Kings Oak is the main pub in the park situated as it is right by the visitors centre and the forest car park. It's a place that is certainly welcome after a long hike where lunch cravings take over and aching thighs scream for pity. The place itself is not only a pub but a full blown venue that can be used for weddings and as a hotel though I have to admit the decor in the brochure that proudly sits on each table does seem to less Notting Hill and more My Big Fat Greek Wedding, still it may be perfect for some. We had lunch in the 'gastropub', a place where if you look (not too) hard the theme of the brochures is very reflected. The massive cherubs, neon pink walls, over the top mirrors and plastic antlers are all there if you look hard enough. We didn't come here for the cherubs though, we came here for the food and embibement; that is something they did well. The whole place had a great atmosphere. We had a couple of pasta dishes, some huge grilled cheeses and a fish and chips. The food itself wasn't bad but not at 'gastropub' levels in either presentation or complexity. The satisfying fish was crisp and well cooked but a little greasy and the chips tasty, chunky but hardly crispy. The other food was tasty and offered good value. Overall this isn't a bad pub if you like some cherub spotting and a decent meal after a long walk.
