We both wear glasses. Where was he suppose to placed them if he didn't have his own nightstand? I had to wedge a bag against the wall, see pic. The outlets were located behind the nightstands and under the desk, which made them hard to access. Most hotels now have them placed in very accessible areas. Our second room had two nightstands. The protruding wall was gone. It had the same view as the first room. It was missing the second chair. The shower door let out water onto the floor. The small circular shelving was also missing from the bathroom. Now there was barely any storage area. The ledge above the sink was the shallowest I have ever seen. The breakfast buffet and Caxton Grill were serviceable. We didn't love them enough to keep eating there in exclusion to trying out new places. We enjoyed the area. There were a lot of walkable attractions to see. Our room just wasn't functional for us.

I had been lucky in that I was looking for a 'different' hotel for a single night stay after a 65th birthday party in Sawbridgeworth. I wanted to get away from the Travelodge and Welcome Inn for a change. Now, don't take that wrongly, we love both of those hotel chains but, on this occasion, wanted something different. A really friendly, welcome as we arrived, by Richard. Owner of The Mill with his wife Miranda. Miranda, we were told was the brains in the kitchen. As it was a quiet time of year we were upgraded to a larger room in the house. Lovely large room with all the amenities needed, including bathrobes. Comfy bed, and I mean comfy. Neither of us wanted to leave that bed in the morning. Flat screen TV, coffee/tea making facilities. Free, fast WiFi. All of this for a very reasonable price of just under £50. An extra £7.50 each gave us a wonderful breakfast starter for the day. There had to be a 'down side' to these prices so it was going to be the breakfast, we thought. No way, cereals available with orange juice in the huge glass jug. Wonderful cafetiere of nicely ground coffee and then the full English. A plateful of beans, mushrooms, tomato, egg, bacon (so tasty) and sausage (must have been local) with toast. Set us up for the day. Speaking to Richard he said that the Mill was an ongoing project of theirs. Restaurant, Wild Hart, with its local game and venison dishes. We look forward to giving it a try in the near future. I can see that booking will have to be made to get a table. Great stay and I would recommend The Mill to anyone if they are looking for somewhere to stay in the area.

There are about 18 rooms, with a tiny little bar and dining area. It was a perfect size for a party celebrating our friends' 40th year. Serving various (bottled) unfamiliar ales and brews alongside your normal lager downstairs, service was very friendly and the staff seemed genuinely eager to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Note: in the morning mist, this place will knock your socks off. We had a buffet for the party so I can't comment on the meals themselves, although I was a little disappointed that the hot breakfast was limited for non meat eaters even though I had checked ahead, but no matter, what I had was ample. I also stayed overnight - there are two sets of rooms - one in the main body of the mill itself, and the rest in a separate house only a few metres away. I stayed in the separate building - which I was a little grateful for - the rooms are nicely decked out but it is noisy given the age of the property (1874) so be warned if you are a light sleeper, especially if you are in room 18 (by the main door), as I was. Plenty of tea and coffee in the room, plus your own teapot, which I made plenty good use of.

A cozy long sized bed and sofa to lounge when we needed to chill without lying down. There was ample closet space and some shelving to putting away clothes. The desk area was very nice and roomy with a nice style about it. The lamps had good lighting that was warm and inviting. The bathroom had good water pressure and sink space to place all toiletries. The staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating. They allowed us to use the amenities at their spa when our room wasn't ready and we needed to clean up from the all-day travels we had spent since the day before coming over from the States. Staying at the hotel is an experience from the fact that this Victorian building used to be the original train station for St. Pancras. They have repurposed the high-ceiling gothic interior that originally served for the meeting and ticketing offices for the main lobby area and the Booking Office 1869 bar. The grandeur of the design is allowed to fully take place in the superb elements of fine dining and comforting relaxation. The Booking Office Bar & Restaurant was a mainstay for us during our time at the hotel. It's difficult not to want to check out the Victorian splendor of that interior while enjoying delicious cocktails and food at the bar or one of the nearby tables. While we didn't have the opportunity to enjoy the Victorian Punch Hour that was at 5:05 each afternoon, it is something of heard to check out if you can. In addition to the Booking Office, there is the Hansom in the lobby, the Seasonal Terrance for wine hour, MI + ME, and the Gothic Bar. The latter of which was also quite magical with its Victorian design and grand luxurious interior with darkly warm lighting and creative cocktail menu. We arrived in London on an early morning flight, so we got to the hotel way before check in. The staff welcomed us and was happy to store our bags while we spent the day exploring the city. When we returned after dinner, the staff had our keys ready and had already delivered our bags to our room. When we got to the room, we found a lovely plate of chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us...a wonderful surprise. Our room was small, but about what we expected for London. The room had everything we needed and was nicely appointed. The beds were comfortable and bigger than we expected, which was a godsend considering there were four of us. The bathroom was spacious, even with multiple people using it at the same time. The thermostat only gives a few degrees of temperature control, but it was enough to keep us comfortable. The location was great for us. We wanted to be away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas, but still close to transportation, restaurants, and coffee. And that's exactly where this place is...we saw far more business commuters and locals than tourists, found numerous restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and bus stops within 2 blocks in nearly any direction, and about a 5-minute walk from a tube station. On the negative side, the staff wasn't always great at responding to pre-arrival communications. The front desk staff's advice was hit-or-miss; seemed to depend on who we asked. Our reservation was for 4 people, yet our room consistently provided only 3 bath towels. And, when we received our receipt at checkout, we found a charge for $4.54 for a beverage, which we knew nothing about. But again, our overall experience was very nice. We have no trouble recommending the place, and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
