This property is unbelievably beautiful. Didn't stay here, but did have reservations for afternoon tea. It looks like a castle and the views from the tea room are incredible. You have a great view of the river and the boats passing through. Book afternoon tea in advance as they get pretty busy. 25£/person for a selection of tea ( I got the ginger) and a large assortment of sandwiches, scones with clotted cream ( THE BEST), mini pastries, all so good! If you would like to add some Champers, it's 12£ a glass. Very classy establishment and you feel like you are taken back in time. Would love to stay here overnight sometime as it's so peaceful! read more

I'd like to start off by saying that many of the staff were very polite and courteous and I am truly thankful for that. Many of the claims that I am going to make are circumstantial however they must not be ignored. We were given a room designed to be accommodating for handicapped individuals and so I can't speak to rooms intended for non handicapped guests but the room did feel quite cramped. The air conditioner did not work and the room became extremely hot overnight this is something that I have heard other guests complained about. The shower drained directly onto the floor however I think this was unique to our room. This caused a large puddle to spread across the floor and made navigating the bathroom quite a hazardous endeavor. Several staff members were extremely disrespectful and unprofessional. We were unable throughout the stay to contact the hotel management. When we went too the front desk to let them know about an issue that we were having a middle aged caucasian male ​sitting behind a glass barrier laughed loudly and obnoxiously at us. We went to the dining room in the afternoon and requested to have tea. We had looked on the website to check if we needed to reservations and it stated that we only needed to have reservations in some cases but were otherwise not required. This turned out to be incorrect, despite this we were able to be seated and the service was wonderful! We very much enjoyed the experience and would like to make it clear that all of the restaurant staff members were very polite and wonderful to interact with. This does not excuse the behavior of the front desk staff as some of them were, as stated earlier rude and unprofessional. A lack of communication and ease of finding information can account on our part for some confusion that occurred in between us and the front desk staff however the way that some voiced their frustrations with us is not excusable. We will be contacting management about some of these individuals but I want to make it clear that this is by no means directed at all of the staff. The view was beautiful but the road to get there is very steep and hard to travel particularly for the elderly and handicapped. The hotel itself was beautiful and well kempt but the entire operation came across as disorganized. I do not think that this hotel is worth the price that it charges. Hotel selwyn is a much better alternative in my oppinion. If you choose to stay here we hope that you have a better experience than we did.​ read more

BE WARNED - Privacy violation! We stayed here and how we have been treated is beyond belief! Beware they offer a discount for upfront payment (sneaky move Petersham) so you select a 'Superior' room and then on arrival get given a 'classic', which should be called an economy or 'peep show room' (despite saying we can wait for our room!) ....it goes on! With the promise on the website of 'a 4 star elegant hotel overlooking the Thames' we got a ground floor, basic room with a view of the smoking area and disabled access path....it gets better, our room also came with peeping Toms ready to see us naked through our 'variety of views' window, whilst they were smoking, drinking and enjoying the Wedding they were there for. Thank you Ilhan Keles and crew, you make us feel so special! So when we gather our dignity and go to reception for resolution we are told there are no rooms available sorry (sorry, not sorry really?!) I see mr Keles business card on reception and call him....he answers on his day off and miraculously an alternative room becomes available! Wow! Miracles happen in Richmond to us mortals! Meanwhile a man enters our room while my girlfriend is getting ready (alone) and he goes in and says 'well yes this is a smoking area outside'.......??? WTF! Superior room? Elegant 4 star Hotel? I think not! Petersham! Make this a staff room or one for the less concerning traveller?! So we get the 'alternative' (still not superior room and then try and see what resolution is to be offered for this major violation of privacy, and lack of empathy.....'we gave you an alternative room and that is that' oh what should I have expected from this 'elegant 4 star hotel overlooking the Thames' with 'well appointed rooms'...........' The Petersham offer a haven of comfort and calm....' Not so Ilhan! Without any further offer of recourse and no other manager available at check out we disappear home, disappointed! Following on with an email we were offered a miserly sum from this 'elegant 4 star hotel' that left us far from enjoying a 'haven of comfort and calm' instead feeling violated, angry and far from calm or elegant! On rejection of the offensive offer and the reconfirmation of the lack of paid for room, service, privacy and empathy we were then indirectly called liars as Ilhan checked the CCTV that looks at our room window (really! Can you do this?!) and can see that the 'shutters' were shut......so we must be liars and the customer is wrong.....? Only the top shutters were open......(my girlfriend could not even reach these!) Anyway what I am saying is that we have been violated, embarrassed, ripped off, inconvenienced, called liars and left feeling a little 'in-superior' from our stay at The Petersham in Richmond that offers an 'Elegant 4 star hotel.......with a haven of comfort and calm'....Superior Room.....???? There are better hotels we recommend in the area so look around! read more

Just had a lovely lunch here with my mum. Food was exquisite - bucks fizz and a glass of White wine complimented my meal immensely and it was lovely to have the view out of he window onto the river. My mums only complaint is the lack of staff to answer the phone. She has been on the phone, it ringing straight for 5minutes once. Cannot say strongly enough what a disappointment this hotel was for us! Arrived at 4 pm to check in & wanted a cocktail and snacks...not allowed! Have a bar with no bar stools. Came home from dinner later that night & wanted a cocktail and dessert...they don't do that. Put us in a room and said they'd serve us drinks but no one ever came into take our order. Breakfast only served 7-9 am. More like renting out a room than staying in a hotel. Very little staff. Clean but very out dated decor. Not a 4 star hotel!!! read more

This hotel has a stunning exterior and is in a beautiful setting - perfect for wedding photos. It's tucked away in Richmond, with breathtaking views of the meadow and Central London, and walking distance to Petersham Nurseries and the Roebuck Pub on Richmond Hill. The rooms are nice, but perhaps a little tired. It's not expensive compared to a Central London hotel where you absolutely pay more for a similar quality, and I prefer it here as it's off the beaten path and close enough to the Richmond Rail/Tube station. I've stayed here a few times: on my wedding night a few years ago and more recently, for a week in summer. I plan to stay again when I'm in the area. The restaurant is okay, though my husband and I felt we were by far the youngest couple there! We had breakfast with our room rate and had afternoon tea with friends. It was very quaint. read more

A truly magnificent hotel in a magical setting. Attentive staff and comfortable rooms. Sitting on the hill overlooking the river Thames the hotel is in the perfect setting. Close to the center of Richmond.. a few yards walk to the towpath that takes you in to town past the bars and cafe's that line the river. The room we stayed in was very light, roomy and had views of the Thames. The bed was big very comfortable and the bed linen of the highest quality. The bathroom had his and hers sinks with a good range of complimentary toiletries. Soft towels together with quality robes and slippers. The staff were attentive and thoughtful. A special mention to the manager Philip Warden and to Alessio who was on the front desk (apologises if I miss spelled your name) They made our stay extra special. The restaurant was excellent... good food, lots to choose from the menu and reasonable priced. We were returning customers from the USA. It was our third visit and our first Yelp review. One of the best views in Richmond, be sure to book early and get a window seat.Quite pricey but the set lunch menu isn't too bad. High quality cooking and presentation, efficient service. Good wine list. Great place for a special/celebratory lunch. read more

The Petersham Hotel is a lovely historical landmark. The setting is lovely and the view brings you back to a more serene time. The staff is charming. Emidio, not a spelling error, is knows how to fix everything. The hotel is very old and was recently renovated. A perfect combination between old and new. If you want to 'get away' this is definitely a lovely and enjoyable place to do so. Great food and great wine selection Richmond Hill Park is right outside and allows you to walk through the Queens' garden where the deer are plentiful. read more

I've only stayed at the Petersham once and that was the night of my wedding, but I can say that the Honeymoon Suite was very nice. It even had a small kitchen in it! The views are stunning if you have a room that looks out on the Thames, so I'd try to get one if you stay there. The staff was very efficient and accommodating. I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

Breathtaking view and luxurious atmosphere. I had an afternoon tea with my dad, my girlfriend, and her mother and we were all amazed with the total experience. The server was very trained and professional so that we thought he was a butler. The food we had were delicious and beautiful! I want to visit England again only for this! read more

Booked an afternoon tea here for my anniversary. The grounds and hotel are very nice as well as great views from the restaurant. The afternoon tea is horrible here. The sandwiches had no flavor, there was a bug crawling in the salad between the sandwiches, and the desserts were not good. I would not recommend this place for afternoon tea. read more

This is a review of the restaurant - Party of 6 for a family occasion at 7.15 on a Saturday night. Shown, as we had requested, to a wonderful table in the window with the spectacular view. 5 mins after being seated we were told by the polite omni matre d' that they had sat us in the wrong table. We refused to move pointing out that, we had been coming here for 25 years and we were sat (we had elderly with us). Maitre D' accepted his fate in fairness and service resumed at a fine standard. Shame it has to happen though. Much to mu surprise the food was very good. Ballontine of Fois Gras was dense and falvourful with a lovely muscat jelly. Anchovies with egg were fresh and delicious. SEa Bass was superb and accompanied with a brandade of excellent quality . Venison with a balsamic and chocolate sauce worked well. Cheeseboard was correct temperature and a good selection with generous crackers and digestive. Rum Baba had rum poured at table. We wore jacket and there were people quite casually dressed which detracted from the room and I think they knew it. I would instigate a jacket only on a Sunday lunch and Dinner policy here. An excellent dinner only marred by the incident at the start. Expensive. Ill go back now to try Sunday lunch.. read more

If you are feeling very rich then this is a true luxury to enjoy. The rooms are stunning and the views even more so. A meal here will set you back a lot but the food and service is exceptional. As might be expected the atmosphere is quite stiff. However, for a sophisticated treat this is definitely the number one place to dine or stay while in Richmond. read more
