I never really got into the whole boba hype when I was growing up. Still, the prospect of boba on the other side of the Atlantic piqued my interest when I was in the neighborhood... First things first: you'll definitely feel the dollar-to-pound conversion when you peruse the menu. While I am no stranger to paying extra for some of the fancier toppings (like jellies), I was a little disappointed to see that even the boba tapioca balls cost an extra £0.50. (Maybe this is normal outside of the States, where the drink is known as "milk tea" instead of "boba"? Because otherwise I find it hard to believe that boba can be sold without, well, the boba...) I went with the Assam black milk tea because I find that choosing the most basic of milk teas is the best way to evaluate a boba spot. It wasn't as sweet as the basic black milk teas that I usually can find in the U.S. (understandable, as most drinks in the U.S. are probably sugarier). The boba was fresh (to be expected, as I had pay extra for it...) At the end of the day, I had paid £4.50 for the regular size of some pretty average tasting boba. The shop itself is pretty tiny, though the seating is pretty hip-looking.

It opened last week and I don't think they have a website at the moment so I wanted to share what I could about this place. Menu is basic but has the essential milk and fruit teas. I'm pleased to see that they have a caffeine-free selection as well! I ordered a jasmine green tea with pearls and it tasted so good and fresh. Pearls were also soft and chewy. They have a special discount going on due to their grand opening so definitely check them out. What is also unique is that their cups look recyclable and possibly reusable (material is more stronger than usual boba cups) so will see if this is true when I come back to ask!

Also got the Chai and a Brown Sugar. Maybe it was my palette, but the tea was really strong and very bitter. The pearls were okay, but we did have to wait 15 minutes for them to make a new batch. Out of the three, I think the Brown Sugar was the best. The Roasted Oolong was okay, but I didn't end up finishing it.

Biju was my last sample on a day of bubble tea tasting, on my way back to the Earl's Court area. I noticed that the place had much more seating (given the location in S. Kensington I suppose), and it was bright and airy with plenty of seating. The seating wasn't terribly comfortable though. The options here seemed limited, and I went something different for me - The Green Mousse Tea, half sweet. I wanted to try mousse tea while on my trip here, but this was disappointing. Without a doubt, this was my worst experience for Bubble tea here in London. I would not go again. The prices were significant lower than in all other places in London, and I know why. Maybe I would have a better experience going with a more standard mango green tea with bubbles, but the mousse tea here was not to my liking. The staff were friendly enough, but I just didn't feel like this place met my expectations for Bubble Tea. Next please!

I visited Gonuts probably 5-6 times during my stay in Islington, and the tea just kept bringing me back. I went for the milk tea with bubbles, and tried the black tea flavor, green tea, and rose tea. While I enjoyed all of their teas, I have to say that the rose was my favorite. I thought the flavor was incredibly unique and very different from any boba flavor I had had before. I also like how the shop lets you pick your sweetness. Just a warning -- full sugar is VERY sweet! I usually opted for less sugar and it was still perfectly delicious. The shop is small, but comfortable. They have great wifi and it's relatively quiet so I found it to be a great place to do work. The staff is friendly and welcoming too. I would definitely recommend Gonuts if you're in Islington!
