The Westgate Room was probably one of the most questionable (in a negative way) dining experiences thus far in 2022. My brother in law made dinner reservations for my sister's birthday and already the host was a little awkward when we arrived. To keep this review short -- the waitress spilled alcoholic beverages on my sister within the first 20 minutes of being seated, it took a long time to receive the replacement drinks, the waitress was not very attentive, the waitress was struggling for the longest time trying to open a bottle of wine and did not even pour it properly, the portions were very small for the price, when we asked for silverware, the waitress dropped some of it, incorrect dishes were coming to our table, and we received bread at the very end of the meal when we were already full. As for the positives -- we were seated outside and next to the live musician who was lovely, the food was quite tasty, the patio was pretty (though quite contrasting with parts of the hotel in terms of modernity), and when this older man (possibly a busser because his outfit was different) found out it was my sister's birthday, he brought out a free dessert with a candle (our actual waitress did not). Overall, the bad outweighed the good, but I'm thankful for the older gentleman and live musician.

Came to Westgate for Afternoon Tea. The quality overall of the menu is one of my favorites, but a few things keep me from giving it 5 stars. First off in parking in the garage, we weren't sure if it was valet and self park available or only valet. There weren't any signs for self park and the valet attendant wasn't very clear when we asked. We ended up just valeting it. I knew the afternoon tea was in the hotel lobby, but I've never been to the hotel so wasn't sure in what area. We ended up being seated at the far end of the tables, which I didn't really like. A lot of traffic from people coming in and out of the hotel passed on all sides of us and of course they were curious on what's the menu and wanted to see what we were having. I didn't particularly like where we were seated and would have rather been in a little more in. I do like that they give you a box of all their teas and a sample to smell. We were told we could each pick our own tea flavor, which I initially thought was great. However after we all got our teas, when asked if we could change one of them out, our server was very surprised and seemed hesitant to change it out. So although I did like my tea, I really enjoy trying several different teas during afternoon tea and it seemed like that wouldn't be the case here. Aside from the above, everything else was great. I really like they had a kids menu available as well. There's also live music from a harpist. On the menu there are 3 courses. The first course was Baja Prawn, Smoked Salmon, Curry Chicken Salad, Brie Cheese, and Aged white cheddar muffin. The second course is a buttermilk scone with cream and jam. The last course is the petite four. In comparison to other high tea places, their finger sandwiches have higher quality ingredients and added seafood. For desserts, other places usually supplement with pieces of fresh fruit, but Westgate gives you a nice sweet variety to end the afternoon. The price point is a little higher but worth the extra cost.

I have come here for afternoon tea a couple of times. It is my favorite one in San Diego. (I have visited them all.) The food is always so delicious. What a beautiful hotel. One thing I really do not like, is that this is the only tea room that will not let you get another tea after yours is finished. They look at you like you are crazy for asking. If that would be an option, I know they would get 5 stars from me. So much food, I always take a to go box home and my family loves it. I cannot wait for another reason to come back here!

This review is for afternoon tea. I surprised my husband for our 5th year wedding anniversary and we are very happy with our experience. I made a reservation over the phone and they were so thoughtful to ask for food allergy. Upon arriving to the location, we were surprised to find out that the parking is as cheap as $10 for 3 hours. The valet parking took our car and we walked in the dining hall without worrying about parking. Only part I did not like was it was a bit confusing where to go once you enter the dining hall since the waitress and the hostess was only one. As soon as she served the table, she immediately greeted and seated us upon learning of our reservation. We had the 3 course with the champagne and it was very lovely! I selected the chocolate truffle tea and I love it. I am a chocoholic so I love it. My husband got the ginger peach tea and he love it, he just doesn't like putting cream with it. It was surprisingly filling! We started eating at 3 and it's almost 7pm now and I am still laying in bed full from the afternoon tea! We had such a wonderful time so I ordered a second round of champagne. That did it... I am still relaxing in bed right at this moment... I highly recommend this place!

This review is for a visit I had during San Diego Restaurant Week before the coronavirus paramedic. Hotel and restaurant is a diamond in the rough. Everything is top bough about the restaurant and the lobby of the hotel leading to the restaurant. Food was great as well. It was my first time and I loved it. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The one star less is because service was a little slow despite telling them that we are on our lunch break and we need to go back to work. I took more pics, but for some reason I delete them, as I got run out of storage, before uploading them here.

We had reservation for the "Thanksgiving Buffet" dinner. When we arrived and valet parked (additional $12.00) we found our way to the check in area. The waiting room was huge and very festive and welcoming. When you checked in they offered you complimentary champagne while you waited on your table. There were plenty of sofas and chairs to sit and enjoy a couple of glasses of champagne. Once your table was ready you were directed up the stairs into the dining area. It was very elegant with white linen table cloths and napkins and everyone was very helpful and friendly. The buffet selection included a craving station, seafood station, dessert station, salad station and a favorite of side dishes. I totally enjoyed the food and the service. Our waiter was friendly and promptly removed empty plates from our table while keeping our water glasses filled. I totally enjoyed the evening.

Wow. Our experience at Westgate was amazingly terrible from start to finish. For such a posh hotel one would expect stellar service. WRONG. We made a reservation for high tea and walked into the hotel expecting to be able to clearly figure out where the dining area was. We ended up walking right past it to the hotel lobby front desk to ask for help. She gave us terrible directions and told us to go through some door that was clearly incorrect. We finally ended up right where we started, which was right by the entrance where a bunch of couches and coffee tables were set up. We approached a staff member walking through the area and discovered that this was in fact the tea room. Yes, the hotel lobby with handfuls of people constantly streaming in and out. The staff lady ended up seating us on a couch with a low coffee table after we told her we had a reservation, but she never even checked our names??? Like literally anyone could walk in and say anything. We asked her to explain the menu, which she did in a very confusing and unclear way. To our understanding, we could have one pot per person. Asking for further clarification had the opposite effect so we each just ordered a pot of tea. This will be important to my story later. Then a second staff member arrived with water and he DROPPED A GLASS OF WATER ALL OVER ONE OF MY COMPANIONS, ME, AND HALF TABLE. Great. My poor friend had to try to sponge herself off with a cloth napkin and we spent an uncomfortable 15 minutes with the server slowly wiping the table down and resetting it with dry plates and utensils. Finally our food arrived after waiting for 20-30 minutes. Meh. All the bites tasted like they were made for a buffet lineup. You know that cheap, artificial, overly sweet taste? Yep that's the one. The baguettes and sandwiches were stale too, like they had been made days ahead of time. I should have taken my $30 to go out for a fancy lunch instead. Another huge and glaring problem was their tea service. The tea itself was all right. Decent but overall kind of generic and plain. They don't offer a ton of choices, but apparently the choice you do make you have to stick with for the entire meal. Which was definitely not explained to us at the beginning. I had to argue with the first server for at least 5 minutes before she even began to consider letting us switch out a pot of tea that we didn't particularly enjoy. Are you serious? After spilling water over us you're still going to give us a hard time when you didn't explain the rules clearly to us the first time? The only thing I enjoyed about my experience was the live harp music. Seriously though, don't be fooled by the fancy exterior because the inside certainly doesn't match up. Save your money for one of the numerous other tea places available in SD. Charlatans!

I had the granola with almond milk (ordered it for breakfast from the pool) and it was delicious! The service was quick and great. I'm leaving a bad review because this week they decided to remove all vegan items (which were already very few) from their breakfast menu. Not sure what drove this decision, but I think it's good for hotels to have at least a few vegan options for their vegan clients. I don't recommend this place to vegans for breakfast.

Cocktail shaker lid flew over the bar into my lap and onto the floor!

There two of us tonight for happy hour and it was our first time at the Plaza Bar. We came in and sat at a table by the piano. Several waiters went by us without acknowledging our presence, so we moved to the bar stools thinking we might get service there. The bartender was so busy and in such a frenzy that the top to his cocktail shaker flew off over the bar and landed in my lap! That was a first but what got me was that he did not even apologize! We waited and waited, so finally I caught the eyes of one of the waiters who had gone behind the bar so I asked him if we could order but by then the happy hour was over! No matter. We ordered a couple of glasses of wine, As the waiter poured the last remaining bit of wine from the bottle, I smelled the vinegar and had to ask him to pop open a new bottle and give us a clean glass. At this point, we waited and waited and our Parmesan fries came out first but there was no cheese on the fries. We could have gone to a fast food place for fried frozen fries! We ate them as we waited for our tacos and at the bottom of the paper wrapper was the Parmesan cheese which someone had obviously poured in before the fries! We were each served a crab cake which was good and finally, one of our two tacos arrived and the other one arrived about half an hour later! The service was awful!!!

Very nice setting for afternoon high tea. Our wait staff was very attentive and professional. The elegance of it all was amazing & fun. Moderately priced, this tea was a great value. Reservations are recommended as it was full for our time. The Champagne was extra if you decide to indulge for a warm up. We have three servings of nibbles - sandwiches, pastries & sweets! A harpist elevated the atmosphere which made the occasion worthy of Cape Coral.

Christmas tree in the lobby

I've been here three times now! The first time was when I treated one of my friends for afternoon tea for her birthday. It was pretty expensive, but you have a fabulous setting with soothing sounds from a harpist and a variety of sandwiches, pastries, and of course tea! We both enjoyed it a lot! The second time was for a wine event up on the rooftop. You can come up here even if you're not staying at the hotel if there isn't an event. There is also a pool and nice views of downtown. The staff was very friendly and invited me to come back for brunch. We had our company holiday dinner here a couple weeks ago, so I was excited to try their dinner menu. There are a few doormen standing outside that opened the door for me and pointed me to the dining room area, so that I don't get lost. The lobby had the prettiest Christmas tree I've seen in San Diego, so far. It was decorated with Nutcrackers! I got there a little late, so an array of bread and butter, and some type of chili? oil was already brought to the table. I don't remember what drink I ordered, but it had Tequila in it and was something made particularly for the holiday season. It was too strong for me though. For appetizers, we shared the Westgate salad, burrata, proscuitto, and crab cakes. We were even given tableside amuse bouche afterwards, which consisted of guava sorbet served in a martini glass with alcohol. I really liked the sorbet! I decided to try the dover sole for my entree and our server prepared it in front of us! He educated me in knowing when a restaurant serves a real one or not. The fish should be able to be cut in four sections, that's all I remember LOL. It was a very light fish that looked so small after all the bones were taken out. It was a little salty, but not bad tasting. I also tried the some Chilean sea bass, which tasted better to me. The Black Angus beef was surprisingly my favorite! The beef was so tender and very flavorful. I wanted more, but needed to save room for dessert. We ended up getting the lavender creme brulee, tiramisu, baked Alaska, chocolate mousse Napoleon, and creme fraiche cheesecake. The baked Alaska is always a delightful sight to see. Our server lit it up twice since my boss was in the bathroom when it came out. I loved ALL the desserts. They were all delicious and different. The presentation was beautiful as well. Westgate dining is definitely underrated, but if you want to spoil someone you need to take them here to eat, even if it's just for tea.

I am so happy I found this place via AARP! Located in the heart of the Gaslamp District, I had never heard of this hotel prior to searching. Upon checking in, the desk clerk was very friendly, efficient, and answered any questions that I had. As for the room, he put us up on the top (4th) floor. Room is the perfect size for two people. Very clean, warm, inviting, and has some really cute and convenient amenities such as a pineapple themed USB quad port at the desk, along with a Keurig machine (had I known that I'd have brought my own Starbucks K-cups)! The bed was nice and comfy with lots of soft but supportive pillows and two separate comforter blankets so you're not fighting for covers if you are sharing the bed with someone or your significant other. Bathroom is very modern and clean. A hairdryer is hanging in the bathroom as well. The only item missing was an iron and an ironing board; however, you can request that at the front desk. If you are looking for a hotel with a gym, laundry facilities on site, and a full breakfast buffet or continental breakfast, then this place is not for you; however, if those things don't matter to you {I typically look for those types of hotels during a longer stay) then this hotel is all you need. You also get other unexpected creature comforts such as Starbucks coffee in the lounge along with 4 different blends of water as well as these cute pineapple cookies in the afternoon. Based in Seattle, WA, I am so happy I found this chain as I will be on the lookout and consider staying in other cities. Parking is available in a garage connected to the hotel next door for a fee. Also, bikes are available in the lobby for getting around (not sure if gratis or for a fee). I definitely recommend staying here! One small recommendation for the hotel: provide rooms with a small microwave and mini fridge to reheat leftovers. It all worked out as I gave a homeless guy mine.

I've stayed in Gaslamp before, so my hope was that at a minimum this would be a safe and comfortable spot to rest my head. Honestly, they totally met my expectations and then some (not a lot, mind you, but some). The staff were super friendly, even offering my companion and I flowers for Women's History Month and the lobby amenities included a water station and complementary cookies (pineapple shaped, of course). The rooms weren't super spacious but it was enough for a night and they were clean and safe, which is the most important part. Note: there is no parking attached to the hotel! Your best bet is a public lot called Park it on Market about a block away. It's $21 to park overnight and you can book in advance (which I highly recommend because it can sell out).

At that point I had zero confidence in this hotel's cleanliness or standards. When I spoke with management, specifically Helena and Ashley, the experience went from bad to unbelievable. Helena responded with sarcasm and dismissiveness and actually laughed while I explained that both rooms were dirty. Being laughed at while raising legitimate concerns is completely unacceptable. She brushed the situation off and said she would pass it along to her director, which appeared to be nothing more than a deflection. There was no follow up, no effort to fix the issue, and no concern shown at all. I paid to stay in a hotel and was instead shuffled between dirty rooms while being treated disrespectfully by management. This was not just poor service. It was insulting. I am keeping records of everything and will be reaching out to legal counsel to address this situation properly. If you care about cleanliness, professionalism, or basic respect as a guest, I strongly advise avoiding this hotel. This experience was a complete failure from start to finish.
