I thought for year end I would re-review the three groups I consider my fitness/training support team: Heather Collins Training, Precision Multisport and the Wellness Revolution. I have a been a client of Heather Collins Training for over five years. I have had specific goals related to triathlon competition and Heather has done a great job of helping me achieve those goals. She has a very professional approach, focusing on working smarter not necessarily harder. It is fun to train with her. She has a lot of group fitness activities with a good diverse group of clients. I have made several friends through my training sessions with Heather. Heather works out of Precision Multisport operated by Craig Strong and J.P. Bordeleau. Precision is an excellent facility for computraining, running and a whole range of fitness/training activities. The facility is always clean and the equipment well-maintained. It's not glitzy, it's for people who are interested in working with first class trainers in a dedicated facility. They have a broad range of clients from elite triathletes to youths to seniors looking for help staying / becoming fit. Craig and J.P. are both excellent training in addition to doing a great job of maintain the Precision facility. Just around the corner from the Precision facility is the Wellness Revolution run by Dr. Tony Breitbach. Wellness offers a chiropractic and massage services. I use Dr. Tony and Dr. Nick for adjustments and whenever I have a physical aggravation like a tweaked back or sore hamstring. They provide relief and sound advice on how to return to training. Instead of the advice we sometimes get from doctors: "stop doing what you were doing.." they provide help and advice on how to resume doing what you were doing, but maybe in a more sensible way. They also have several massage therapists available who I have used frequently. I thought I would relate one incident that demonstrates how these three groups work together. Just before Christmas I was chipping ice out of my driveway and tweaked my back. I should have gone in and seen Tony or Nick right away, but I had a lot to do and convinced myself I would heal on my own. It was a bad decision. The back improved slowly and then three days ago I was having a computrain session at Precision and the pain returned. A lot worse. I couldn't walk without pain, let alone run. Heather Collins made sure that I went into Wellness immediately. I went over to their facility and saw Dr. Nick (no appointment necessary). He did a series of manipulations and stretches and taped me. I felt better after treatment but not good enough to run. (I'm training for the Boston Marathon and if I miss too many days for injury I won't be as ready as I would like.) The next day I returned to Precision where Heather had me go through a series of gentler exercises that helped to stretch my back and legs. My back was feeling much better after that session. This morning I got up hoping to do my scheduled 11 mile run. I was pain-free at the start of the run and had no pain throughout the run. It wasn't a super-fast pace but there were some hills which I negotiated without any problems. Now two hours after the run my legs and back still feel great. An example of good coaching from Heather, the availability of an excellent workout facility (Precision) and first-class chiropractic treatment from Dr. Nick at the Wellness Revolution. I have always been somewhat fearful of chiropractic medicine, not for any specific reason, but I guess just the idea of someone "cracking" me didn't sound so appealing. My lower back pain caused me to try a LOT of different things for relief, some that worked, some that didn't. Seeing a chiropractor was something left on my list to try, and one thing I liked about this was that insurance covers it, and it does so because of the loads of data to support it's effectiveness. I finally took the leap when I got referred to Dr Tony at WR. I must say my first session was a little scary, not from anything he did, but from my own strange ideas of what I thought might happen. Dr Tony was super nice, professional, very educational, and extremely reassuring. After an assessment, he put me on a program of around 10 follow up sessions to get me to a place of being pain free, or at least in mind, "pain reduced." I did what he asked and saw him over a couple months, going once a week. Pretty shortly after I started going I noticed the pain subsiding, until after just a few session, I wasn't bothered by pain any more. I almost didn't finish my prescribed course of 10 treatments because I was feeling so great, but I decided not to jinx a good thing and saw it through. When I felt better and the sessions were over I stopped going to see Dr Tony on a regular basis for about 6-8 months. Every now and then my old back pain would flare up from bending in weird way or overuse through sports, etc, and each time I'd go back to see Dr Tony, each time feeling way better afterwards. I finally made a decision to "prevent" this from happening in the first place (genius idea, right?) and I started scheduling monthly "tune up" sessions with Dr. Tony. I usually get one of the first time slots in the morning (around 7:30am) and I'm out of there by 7:45am, ready to go to work. It couldn't be an easier thing to work into my day. I can't say enough about WR, Dr Tony, the SUPER friendly front desk staff, and their local "everybody knows your name" kind of un-pressured vibe. I've seen Dr. Tony Breitbach, as needed, over time, for a number of years. His assessments and treatments are spot on, he listens and works well with his patients. He understands their needs. That's why so many of us refer him to others. Top quality care! His office staff, like him, is kind and welcoming. The team Is happy! Initially, due to pulling a muscle in my lower back (my own fault) that was causing severe pain, I could barely move or stand. I knew this was not going to be resolved by a trip to ER for an X-ray and a prescription for a muscle relaxant, etc. A friend referred me to Dr. Tony. He did start with an X-ray of my spine, adjusted the area and taped it to provide initial support and relief. Follow up appointments with him got everything back in alignment. Paulina, a massage therapist, also helped loosen and release tightness in muscles. it was a good combination. This recent visit followed a hospitalization, treatment, and recovery. My body had a lot to adjust to -- and recovery was a long, slow recovery. I had the traditional P.T. eval in the hospital (requested and received a walker with 5 inch wheels -- then and home care follow up for RN, O.T. (twice) and P.T. (once). a few well-meaning, but not helpful friends told me to set goals for myself and do more each day -- and go to out-patient P.T. My PCP told me that this recovery was going to take time -- and to listen to my body. When the time came, I knew by how my body felt, that I didn't need to see a P.T., I needed chiropractic adjustments, at this point, to get back into proper alignment. This recovery has been a process, involving time and a number of multidisciplinary skilled individuals along the way. Each one of them has made a difference in my recovery. I came to Dr. Tony in the midst of an athletic crisis; I had been training for months for a a half ironman triathlon and with the race quickly approaching, found myself with a painful calf injury that was impeding my training. I had gone to two other doctors before. They did ART and this and that, but they did not help. Dr. Tony assured me that he would be able to help me get back to my training, and he did just that. WIth a series of techniques, he was able to release the tightness in both my calves and gave me some tools to prevent them from heading in that direction again. After two weeks of treatments, I was back to running and back on track for the 1/2 Ironman. In addition to working with Dr. Tony, I began getting massages from both of his massage therapists, Rachel and Toni. They always asked what I needed and what I wanted from the massage. Then, after, they asked how I was. They were attentive and skilled, and along with Dr. Tony, they helped keep me healthy as I trained. They also gave me information about the right stretches for what I was doing to my body. I am absolutely convinced that the team at Wellness Revolution was an integral part of my health and training. I completed the 1/2 Ironman, and not only that, exceeded my expectations. Not once did I worry about my calves or my glutes, hamstrings, etc. during the race. I visited Evanston with my wife last summer to see my family, Before leaving the UK my wife was suffering from back problems and unable to work, she needed a walking stick to get around. She was being treated by a chiropractor before leaving home so on arrival in Evanston we sought a local practioner, at The Wellness Revolution. There we were welcomed warmly by a brilliant receptionist and introduced to Dr Tony.Not only did he treat my wife twice weekly during our visit but also treated me for a neck problem which had been ongoing for several years. During our Stay of 3 weeks, my wife's condition improved dramatically after consultation and adjustments ,we were able to walk around the city and along the beautiful beaches with no problems.Altough we were a bit intimidated at first as Dr Tony is so tall, and of course talks with an American accent, but we soon overcame our fears when he started treating us, and My neck problem almost disappeared. We were always welcome on our visits, always treated with respect and noticed a considerable difference to the treatment we had in the UK. I think the residents of Evanston are so lucky to have such a treatment centre in their town, I would almost think it worth another trip just for our health's sake. Dr. Tony is a fantastic physician and just an all around great person. He - along with the entire Wellness Rev team - goes out of his way to make you feel like family. He truly cares about the people he sees. After I had my first child, I ended up with excruciating groin and back pain. Eager to resume my normal running routine, I saw Dr. Tony at the recommendation of another mom at my son's daycare. Within a few visits, I felt like my normal self again. Since then, I've had a few set backs, as well as another baby, and each time, Dr. Tony and the massage staff have been able to get me back on my feet incredibly quickly. I even took my newborn in a few times when we were struggling with gas and colic, and with each visit, she got a bit better. Dr. Tony's commitment to his patients' happiness and wellness is also reflected in his team. The entire staff couldn't be lovelier and more helpful. From appointments to dealing with insurance to helping with my kiddos while I'm there, they are simply the best! I had a very bad fall a few years ago after having a bad experience with a previous Chiroproctor which made my initial condition worse. I've been suffering for the last few years unaligned properly in pain and taking naproxen for inflammation on the right side of my body. I was seen by an orthopedic doctor also. I was also afraid of being in need of a hip and knee replacement immediately. I seen an advertisement on Facebook reluctant after a bad experience. I called and scheduled an appointment. The receptionist went out her way to accommodate your schedule, they're professional and very kind. I starting coming to Dr. Nick about two months ago. After the first visit I could immediately tell a difference. He's very patient , knowledgeable, gentle, listens to me and aims the target. I have been a long term patient in Wellness Revolution, and receive monthly adjustments as well as massages from time to time. Well, this month, , in between adjustments, I strained my back, and was having pain I didn't want to live with down the side of my leg. I scheduled a massage, and then thought I ought to see Dr. Tony for an adjustment, too. He found a pinched nerve in my hip, and after he worked on it, I felt much better. That afternoon, I saw Jessica for a massage. She found knots in the back of my leg, plus what she calls "teacher knots" in my neck. Afterwards, I felt better still. This morning I woke up with NO PAiN AT All! I love Wellness Revolution! The care is personal and friendly, and always backed up with professional knowledge and skill. Dr. Tony is a man on a mission! I was having back pain (partially from an injury in a truck accident in the '60s) that was causing problems in my new driving job. My wife, bless her, sent me to Dr. Tony with these words, "If Dr. Tony can't help you, nobody can!" I was so happy and relieved when he was able to pinpoint my problem and give me relief on the very first visit! I keep telling him that he is a magician, but he denies it. To say that Dr. Tony and the staff at The Wellness Revolution are beyond excellent is an understatement! I've been to other chiropractors in the past and the crew at Dr. Tony's outshines every one of them! I should start by saying that I've seen a lot of different chiropractors over the years but Dr. Scanio at Wellness Revolution is far and away the best. I am so grateful to have found him during a very difficult time (fibro flare-up causing intense pain, knotting, numbness etc). He is knowledgeable of the condition and has a real skill for finding and alleviating tender points. He is confident, kind, extremely good at what he does and I trust him. Oh and he offers complimentary dry needling- it is considered a value added service. This is something they could totally charge for but they don't. How awesome is that? Last of all, I highly recommend Jennifer for a relaxing but very thorough massage. She doesn't miss a muscle and applies the right amount of pressure. read more
