We did the Groupon brunch, my friends drink had mold on the bottom and our waiter was irritated when we told her, she didn't offer a solution and still charged for it. Groupon was $28 and included the $17 brunch which was just satisfactory. Our final bill was $33.25 which they then added a $20 tip to and said it was standard???? 20% maybe but they basically ripped us off. The bathrooms were also DISGUSTING!!!! No soap which means the servers weren't washing their hands while serving food and drinks. Completely disappointed! read more

I've always loved Norfolk for its cultural diversity. The Wave is a great example--it's a huge and very well known gay night club right in ODU area. But The Wave is more than a gay club; it's a cultural crossroads where gay, gay friendly and just plain party people can all have a good time under the same roof. The few nights I've been it seemed like predominately gay males and all types: your average looking dude, your queens, your pretty boys, etc. But every night there's something new, so don't be intimidated if this doesn't sound like your scene. One of the most popular events here is 80s night and people of all walks of life come out in their scrunchies and neon green RayBans to celebrate the bygone era of Reagan and The Breakfast Club. This is probably my favorite club in the area. Staff are always friendly and courteous. Anne-Marie in the back knows what drinks I like. Her drinks are also consistently mixed evenly Not sure I'm a fan of the DJ that was playing for the Black & White party. But I don't go often enough to be overly familiar with who is DJing theses days. Parking is tight, however there is plenty of on street/other "venue" parking to be found. There is quite a bit of space for dancing and a back patio for smoking. I also greatly appreciate that there aren't sports/news being played on the TV's unlike many other bars. You can usually find a pretty diverse group of people which can be good or bad. But for the most part everyone is pretty friendly. Will hopefully be going back soon! read more

Let me just start by saying very rude staff. We were told no security for the club. My first time at a gay bar. Not a great experience for an out of towner. Christmas weekend decided to try a gay bar. The bartender had an attitude because he was working Christmas. We ordered our drinks and were told they were out of tequila. He then carried on in a very rude tone. Never again will I ever do business here again. Family owned or not get your bar stocked before you open for business. After reading a yelp review my friend and I went here her 1st time coming down to visit and had a blast . Even tho we went on what was probably a slow night the dj was great, the drinks were reasonably priced for their quality, and the cover was cheap. Being use to dc we thought this place was gonna totally suck but it didnt. I have been going here since being 18. I mean it can't compete with the major city night clubs but it does a damn good job for the area it's in. You have two different rooms with one being your techno like music and the other your top mainstream hits. The Wave is a fun place to be any night of the week, though Saturday nights are when things get interesting. Like any club or bar there is a lot of questionable activity which can't be helped. However, the DJs there are great and pick good tracks, there are events that roll through on occasion which make the trance/dance music people happy (Dj Irene being the one I went to) and you are bound to run into someone you know. It is a relaxed place with decent drink prices. Don't expect to get a weak drink here, they pack in the booze like no place I know which is what makes them worth the money. read more

I have to say this bar has gotten worse as the weekends progress. Security patting down people now is a bit much. The music only attracts a certain type of crowd and after tonight, seeing the type of shit on the dance floor was beyond disgusting. 2dance floors with the same type of music is pointless. The WAVE has officially lost its fun for myself and friends. I would not recommend this place unless you want to feel disgusted and bored. I'm not a big club-goer by any means, but whenever I find myself at the Wave with a few friends I tend to have a good time. There is always parking available and I've never been in a situation where I had to wait in line. I find the interior layout to be quite unique, at least compared to other similar places in the area. I find the drinks to be reasonably priced and generally strong enough to my liking. In other words, when I get a $5 gin and tonic I feel like I get my money's worth. The music and the crowd varies pretty drastically based on the night you go. I prefer Tuesday nights, because every once in a while there's a DJ who plays good 80's goth/post-punk stuff. Even if the DJ ends up being terrible (as was the case last time I went), you at least get the luxury of people-watching. read more

Its a ok place to go to if you are in VA Beach beacuse there are not many alternatives. They have two dance floors and plenty of bartenders. The atmosphere is not as lively as it would be in a club in New York or LA but its alright to go and have a decent time. There is not a diversity in the crowd either. If you have not been, are gay, isn't gay, a boy, a girl, in-between, you have to go. My niece treated my Mom, my sister and me to a Mother's Day brunch here. The music was wonderful (all eras blended) - we sang along the entire time. There was "live entertainment" and we laughed ourselves to the moon and back. I ordered 2 eggs over easy, hash browns and bacon with a Tom Collins. Came in from DC for the weekend stopped in here on saturday, I went to another bar in Virginia Beach the previous night, and had alot of fun, but i enjoyed the wave a bit more as it feels more like a club. They have no drag shows, and have 2 dance floors that play various top-40 and sometimes other music. The bar staff was decent, and the drinks were strong. The crowd is a gay and straight mix, and the two groups seem to not intermingle too much but don't really seem to have problems. Like other reviewers said its not quite as elaborate or large as many big city clubs, but i had a good time. read more

The Wave is the local college/twink gay dance club. It has the rare quality of not being pretentious. The guys are friendly and the music in the back bar is top 40 and fun to dance to. The front large dance floor is house music and not my style. The wave is really only fun on Thursdays ("80's night".. should be "sort of 80s night") and on Saturday. Saturday is the big night there. There are five bars open on busy nights and two dance floors. An outside patio is available for smoking. If you want to dance in hampton roads and you are gay, this is the only option. Sure, you can dance at the cactus, but only for 30-60 minutes after the long, long, long drag shows. Give the wave a shot, you may like it. Unless you are the kind of guy who automatically hates a place because young people are there (on account of your supposed sophistication and maturity). In that case, spare us all your eye rolling and go somewhere else! read more

I officially do not feel safe at the Wave. I've been going there since my 18th birthday, so about five and a half years. I've always had fun there and have come almost every weekend. Recently, they changed the female bathrooms into unisex bathrooms. I was standing in line waiting to use the bathroom when a girl, not in line, starts harassing me and throwing homophobic slurs at me because I was using 'her' bathroom. I stepped into the bathroom finally and she started violently kicking the door and continuing to scream at me. After leaving, a security guard greets me with "you have to leave" and proceeds to get handsy with me to push me out of the club. Eventually he pulls me to the side and asks my side of the story. I then speak to management. She doesn't seem to care too much about one of her regular patrons being aggressively harassed and hands me off to the "head of security" because she was too busy taking care of her tabs. The head of security tells me they are female bathrooms. I speak to her again and she says that they are, in fact, unisex bathrooms. The disconnect between management/staff and the security is very concerning especially given the heavy security presence. There was a similar incident last year with one of their female security guards. I was waiting in line with a girl friend and she literally pulled me out of line and started pushing me out of the club also. I spoke to management then and they also did not care. I've been to over 16 countries and maybe around 100 dance clubs and I have NEVER seen as much security as this club uses. It's turned into some type of militarized freak show. It's sad that as part of the gay community, I don't even feel safe or comfortable here anymore. I've been going here for a month on Tues. night since I've moved here. Yes I said tueday cuz its the goth/industrial club. The only one in the area. Being that I grew up outside of NY and was a regular in the scene there and went to Philly too... I wasn't expecting much from an "off night" at the local gay bar. But I was wrong. Just don't get there at 10! The large dance floor in the front starts out old school goth and 80s then goes onto industrial. The back room plays a lot of heavy rock and 8os, 90s goth and more offbeat tracks. And they keep playing the friggin True Blood theme, LOL! Best drinks are from the smaller bar. Hey its not NY... but I've never lived this close to a nightclub I actually wanted to dance at. Everyone knows each other too.. and I you are a bit on the "eldergoth" side and wear velvet gowns... you might feel outta place as it is over-run with "kindegoth" graver types and cyber punks. Just the fact that its 18+ and glow sticks are allowed is strange to me. Giving ot 5+ cuz of the area its in. read more

This place is awful. My biggest complaint was that the restroom was extremely unsanitary and in poor condition. The stalls' doors were taken off and the toilets inside were wired shut - what if someone wanted privacy? The workers were rude and had poor attitudes the entire night. This review is for brunch: I came with a group of about 10 people. Lets start with the food...which was a buffet full of things you could find in the grocery store and put together in 10 minutes. For $17 person, I need real food....cooked by someone in the back. It was embarrassing. For dessert they offered the little brownies you can buy in the bakery section of the store with icing and sprinkles. The hashbrowns/home fries were some pre-made potatoes heated up. The sausage was gag-worthy. The salad was fresh. Kudos. This may be the only buffet I've ever gone to where getting seconds didn't even cross my mind. The worst part of my experience was paying for the check. The waiter never asked if we wanted separate checks....and with such a large group, it would have been great to know how they would distribute the check/s. He gave us one check...a handwritten check that didn't have things itemized...just the total. At one point he got frustrated and said...."you know what, I don't know where we are with the check,....ya'll have a nice day" and shooed us away like he was done talking to us. Went here using a Groupon (brunch for 2 plus 2 non-alcoholic drinks for $20). I really enjoyed the show! The Mistress of the Ceremony, Jasmine Devoux Spaulding was hilarious! She can throw some shade! The show was very lively, and it distracted us while we waited for our food. The food was decent. I ordered the sausage frittata. What I received wasn't a real frittata. I received a flat scrambled egg with sliced sausages, onions, peppers, and cheese on top. It reminded me of an egg pizza--like an unfolded omelette. It tasted good, but it was definitely not what I was expecting. The drinks are reasonably priced. I think the Mimosas were $3.75. The part that took the longest was getting our check, but I think that was due to miscommunication with our waitress. Overall, I would definitely go again. I think you're better off not purchasing the Groupon because the most expensive food item on the menu is $8.75. I don't think the Groupon really saves you much money. read more

Absolutely amazing.This club has it all.It has about 3 bars.It is freaking huge.The light show is spectacular.The crowd is easy going light hearted people who like to have fun.Its not exactly a gay bar for it has different nights,but it is very gay friendly.There is 80's night which is a must.The music is great and the DJ spins like no other.There are mounds of people that pack the stage and get the club up to maximum excitement(I being one of them).Saturday night(dance night) is pretty much gay night.Its okay except there are mounds of voguing divas.There is in my opinion a lot more tension and showiness.The music is mostly techno.I may be gay but I like my music straight up.It at times can be appealing to hear a Britney Spears song stretched to 10 minutes and annoying at other times.The prices are very reasonable.Thursday nights:18 yr-21 is only 6 dollars and 21yr and up is only 4.On Saturday it is 10 dollars for 18-21yr and 6 dollars for 21yr and up.I recommend going it is an amazing experience you wont forget. read more

Unfortunately our experience here with the Drag Queen brunch on 8/14/16 was very disappointing. First it is a breakfast buffet at 16.75 each. At that price I would expect better food than what it was (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, green salad, sloppy joes, and Cole slaw) To make it worse, ours was the last table to go and we literally paid that for a biscuit, salad and piece of bacon because there was no food left. Once the bill came we were informed that they can't split the check, not a huge deal but knowing that on the front end would have been nice. The bill includes 20% gratuity which is high for a buffet because the waiter literally only brought our drinks and filled up our water. But again ok I get it. Once we got our final tabs, the waiter tried to add an additional gratuity in addition to over charging the 3 of us by $3/ea. When we pointed this out he got mad, crossed off the additional gratuity and then threw $3 at my friend and stormed off. The queens are fun but can't make up for that kind of terrible service and poor food quality. I will not be back. read more
