Service has sort of gone down hill. It just seems like the bartenders are burnt out and don't really care anymore. They're not very helpful or friendly. She calmly tried to explain that she wanted to see what the machines were and how to play. He continued cursing at her "you can't fucking touch people's machines" "this is gambling". "I've got $350 fucking dollars on this machine" She tried to explain she was sorry and didn't know and he continued to speak to her disrespectfully and cursing at her. She walked away and asked for our tab. I got up walked over and asked him "is that how you speak to people?" He starts trying to explain himself and I reiterated that he could have said things very differently and she didn't know and that's unacceptable. He tells me to talk to the bartender. The bartender comes over and as we are explaining what happened, she says "you probably shouldn't be pushing buttons". There were no questions asked and not one word was said to the douchebag on the machine. We don't live in a state that has gambling. We didn't know he had money on the machine and we certainly weren't trying to spend his money. Ask questions, explain yourself but you don't speak to my wife that way and you will not curse at her and think it's acceptable. We were offered to go cups to take our drinks with us as we left. We were so pissed and upset, we left our full drinks on the bar and left. I can promise you this, we will not ever return here and we will make sure everyone we know is aware of how this establishment treats people who aren't regulars. It's supposed to be a safe environment for all. We didn't feel safe and we didn't feel supported. Shame on you Mr Douchebag and shame on you MJs tavern.

The twerking contest am not sure if I'd rate a 1 or 2. Overall I guess it's an alternative to go to if you don't have plans to watch the Admirals!

Last week for date night we attended a Candlelight Concert of the Nutcracker and old Christmas carols. It was beautifully decorated and all aglow with thousands of candles. I liked the side bar area - the old-world feel (think opera house 1890s) and the various opportunity for set-up and party hosting as well as the stage for the performers. Parking is super easy nearby in one of the numerous downtown garages. No complaints from me! Charming.

Okay first off when i lived in Virginia , I used to visit this club weekly if not a few times a week. I have to say this place has went down hill in the past 2 years. I recently went there after being told NOT TO by some friends that still live here. They said that it was a bad idea, everyone is always fighting there and gay people get attacked. I being a white male 6'4 and 220lbs and the experiences i had there before told them not to worry i'll be fine. BOY OH BOY was i wrong. The night started out okay. I though that there could have been more people but hey it's only 11pm. So by midnight it was packed. Thats when it went down hill. Throught out the night i did observe a group of girls constantly arguing with random people and starting fights the entire time but hey they are not messing with me so who cares. Well at 1:30ish i payed my tab , A friend of mine and i were walking through the back dance floor and was bumped into by some dancer (hello this happens our on the dance floor) this cause him to bump into one of the bitchy girls. He said excuse me and she punched him straight in the face and the other girls started to jump him. I immediately along with a few other random people started to pull them off of him While they were screaming Homophobic slurs and verbal and physically assaulting him. We got them separated and were leaving when i was attacked my security of the wave and told i needed to leave for fighting. I told them i did nothing wrong and i just needed to get my coat from the check coat and i would leave.. At the check coat it went crazy i was not aloud to leave on my own and I was then yelled and verbally abused by the STAFF of the WAVE. At the coat check i was kicked in the back of the legs and pushed to the ground in the kitchen. Angela the bar tender then hit me with a pool stick I have the marks on my arm to prove this where i blocked it. on my way up to get some grounding .. my pants were pulled down BY THE STAFF , I fought to get up so i could pull my pants up and pushed them against the wall i was then restrained form with my arms behind my back as i was Litteraly drug through the kitchen. This is horrible treatment for anyone to go through especially when you did not do anything wrong But trying to stop violence. I can not believe that this place is still in business and that they allow straight clients to bash there gay clients , when it is supposed to be a gay bar. Thank god i have moved to a Different state and do not have to deal with trash hole in the wall wanna be clubs like this. I have taken pictures and i am in the proccess of contacting my lawyer to file a lawsuit. This used to be a good place to go maybe 4 years ago. But i would not recommend this to anyone. Unless you want to be mistreated and gay bashed at a gay bar then this is right up your ally. read more

Be careful coming here. I went to this club last night and I was with some underage people who've been before. After going to the bar and ordering a drink, one of the security guards claimed that one of the underage persons drank my drink. Five guards came up and asked us to leave. After chatting with them just to understand their perspective, and as I was getting ready to leave. One of the security (AA guy with a small bush on his head) told me to "Get the f**k out" I told him I was, and that I was just finishing my drink (I spent over $45 up to this point), he grabbed my drink threw it down and grabbed me with both of his hands and literally threw me out of the club. I was in complete shock by the aggression and hostility by the security here. As I spoke with the head security about the incident. The same security who threw me out came back outside and kept saying "Did I want smoke with him? (ake want to fight him)" Mind you most of them were straight... I felt like homophobia was being acted upon here. I've never ever been treated in this matter, moreover at an LGBTQ club where I usually feel safe. The head security stated to me that they act like that because of what happened at Pulse in Orlando. I was even more offended that they were comparing this situation to a mass shooting. A mass shooting that I actually lost a friend in.. I hate to see one of the only LGBTQ clubs in Norfolk treat people like this. I understand that to them one of their rules were broken, but the overall response was completely uncalled for. I'll never attend this place ever again or recommend to anyone. read more

If I could leave negative stars I would. Let's start from the entry. The security is rude and rough with you. Almost like they dont want to be there. Inside it smells like a sewer, and is stuffy hard to breathe like no airflow. The bartender Tommy kept being weird and pushy to me and the other girls I was with. When he got the message that we weren't into his sexual advances he ignored us. there are drugs everywhere In this place. I was waiting in line for the restroom behind this girl with silver hair and her friends for 10 mimutes then they all come out and her top is down completely exposing herself. she shoved past me, falls down and was screaming. Come to find out she is relative to the owner or managers somehow. witnessed security grab and be rough with a very small guy That was just dancing, while this girl and the staff brag about doing cocaine in the bathroom and getting more. We decide to leave. pay the tab and overcharged. Tom again with the sexual advances and then has the nerve to ask why we didn't tip more? then outside there is a big fight in the parking lot stretching across the street and I see the same staff doing drug deals outside. We got attacked here by a bouncer who claimed domestic violence! we went to court only to state he couldn't identify me after claiming my husband beat on me, attacked him, leaving 8 stitches in his face, both of us went to jail! Me because I was going ballistic cause my man was on the ground uncomprehensive after 2 drinks couldn't even talk, blood dripping down his face! the bartender is not to be trusted! over spikes the drinks! This place needs to be shut down! Went to court over this situation just for the bouncer to claim he couldn't identify me! and as soon as I testify against the bouncer before I get a word out the case suddenly gets dismissed meanwhile they were Claiming domestic violence! and took pictures of my neck while I was wearing a crop top while the pictures were never brought in court I was so called "abused" by my husband! as we were dancing and he got attacked by a bouncer who had a abuse of power.PLEASE ITS NOT WORTH IT DO NOT GO ! The Wave is definitely a mixed bag depending on when you go. The crowd skews heavily LGBTQ+, and you'll meet all kinds, from older guys clearly on the hunt to younger folks just looking to dance and vibe. Early in the night, the place can feel a bit lifeless and the atmosphere leans depressing when it's empty. But after midnight, especially on pay weekends, the energy shifts fast. It gets loud, crowded, and wild. Security presence is strong, which I actually appreciated, it made the place feel safer. That said, the $20 cover charge feels steep for what you get, especially if you're arriving during the slower hours. TLDR: Hit or miss. Worth checking out once, but manage expectations. read more

My sisters and I always have a blast but let me warn anyone thinking about going to The Wave one night ahead of time. I don't know who the guy that's always up front, taking the cover fee, the manager or whatever he is, but if you are not specifically a homosexual male, do not expect a warm welcome.He is extremely rude, has an attitude from hell and only wants gay guys up in that club. It's cool tho. We just won't waste anymore money at that establishment. We would rather give our money to someone that's going to be a little more grateful for it. read more

It was super chill around this time and this was probably because they just opened their doors for happy hour and the live band. We were able to get a booth seat right near the stage where the local band (Ramonta and friends) were performing. Oh how I could forget...the entry fee... FREE!!!! Let's see...not too crowded, FREE entry, FREE buffet, happy hour drink specials...oh yeah, I am loving this so far. I am not sure how long this club/lounge has been in existence, but I was completely unaware of its existence prior to coming. I can remember driving by some years ago and noticed this was a restaurant once before. But now, they have made great use of the space. So you walk up to the door...security is waiting to check ID and your purse ladies. Not sure if it ever gets slammed, but the two times I have visited there has been no wait in line. So I visited once before on a Wednesday night about 10 pm and again a few Fridays ago just as the club opened. Nevertheless, we walked in and straight ahead is the bar and kitchen area. There is seating located on the right and left side of the club. The right side, I would consider your low key area, so if you want to check out things sit here. But over here, you can't see the dance floor area. Therefore, you may need to get up and roam to check out the whole scene. The left side, where the stage is located, you have about 10 booth seats. These booths also surround the dance floor that's a pretty decent size. You can also view the parking lot from this area...window seating if you will. The DJ booth is located over here too. You can also catch the game on one of their many TVs in the spot. Now if this spot fills quickly it will be standing room only and that could be an issue because it's not super spacey, but just enough space to chill, eat, and dance. Capacity maybe about 150 comfortably. Oh the food...it was tasty. Before I found out they offered a happy hour buffet, we had already ordered food. But it was crazy because about 5 items I ordered previously were unavailable...huh??? What do you mean, you don't have ANYTHING I am ordering...sheeeeesh!!! But they had plenty of fried chicken though - aye yi yi!!! Oh well, we ordered fried drumettes and fried shrimp. So yeah I mentioned how not busy they were and how they JUST OPENED the doors on that Friday evening...so the kitchen clearly wasn't ready to serve. It took 45 mins to get a order of two wing baskets and a basket of shrimp...fries sold separately. Whew... despite the severe wait time, I look forward to returning. I can't knock a club for not having food ready. Now if it was restaurant and nothing more, oh we would have left E-ME-JET-LEE!!!! I am not a club hopper at this age, but back in the day.......owwww, this would have been my lay low spot!!! Not too turnt* not too live, but just enough vibe and drink and get your two step on and leave feeling niiiiice! So yeah, a nice, chill spot with live music and a poppin DJ, I'm with it every now and then. As a result, this place foots the bill - SOLID. Not sure of the age requirements, but I'm guessing 25 and up...but mature crowd indeed - those I partied with on both nights were A OK!!! She told him to leave her alone and he kept getting in her space. And when she called for security no one came, so she defended herself and the perv went to the manager (that I'm assuming he knew) and the manager kicked her out. All this to say, this manager needs to be removed ASAP for failing to even look at security footage to see that my wife was telling the truth.
