The reasonable pricing, consistently friendly people and great finds kick-started their love for thrifting. Today I was admiring a lovely pair of 1940's Bakelite earrings in a locked case. Even though I managed to control myself and walk away, my enabler husband asked to see them. It turns out the woman who helped him was the vendor for that section. She was so kind to offer me a discount, which of course I couldn't refuse. :) It's such a wonderfully nostalgic place -- we'll always be back!

The store was rather dark, and I tried the glasses on briefly, primarily to see how the frames looked on my face. Other customers were waiting, so I didn't linger. It wasn't until I was on my way home to Los Angeles, in natural daylight, that I realized the sunglasses had prescription lenses. I immediately contacted the store. To their credit, the employee acknowledged that they hadn't realized the lenses were prescription either and that the glasses should have been marked accordingly. Unfortunately, that acknowledgment was where their customer service ended. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable. I would have been perfectly willing to have the prescription lenses replaced with ordinary sunglass lenses, pay for the work, and submit the receipt afterward to document the additional expense. I would even have accepted a reasonable store credit toward that cost. After all, I was simply trying to turn the glasses into what I believed I was purchasing--and apparently what the store believed it was selling. The response? An immediate refusal. Not a moment's consideration, not an attempt to find a compromise, and certainly no acknowledgment that the store bore some responsibility for the situation. Frankly, the attitude was disappointing from the moment I walked in. The sales staff seemed aloof and rather impressed with themselves. One might have thought I had wandered into Hermès or Saint Laurent rather than a resale boutique. I don't expect perfection from any retailer, particularly one selling previously owned merchandise. But I do expect a business to take some responsibility when it acknowledges that an item wasn't properly identified. A no-refunds policy shouldn't mean no accountability. I left with a $191.19 pair of sunglasses I cannot comfortably see through and a rather unfavorable impression of a store that seems more interested in projecting luxury than providing customer service.

I found this the week I officially left a five-year relationship and left SB, and I can't believe I didn't know about it. Every time I passed the store, I just saw a bunch of jeans on a rack outside. There is almost NO activity (not even a full pelvic exam) I loathe as much as trying on jeans. So i never went in. OMG: my first visit I bought a vintage Nicole Miller the cleaning ladies back east washed in a machine but which I hope to re-wash and block out, or just wear over leggings with boots. 78. I have never received less than five compliments any night I wear this dress and if I post a picture on social media, people who never remark on clothing make a point of how fabulous it is. I also bought a Nanette Lepore for 75: it's one of my most frequently-worn dresses. In December, I spent about 300 and this was my take: 1) Two black-tie appropriate dresses: one long red gown with spaghetti straps, heavily lined, substantial and one black/white mid-calf dress that would work at black-tie if accessorized properly. Together they were 85. 2) Three cashmere sweaters: 110 for all. 3) Never worn Theory patent leather heels (burgundy/brown) with a thin strap (Mary Jane-style): 35. 4) A sparkly mauve cowl neck, perfect for casual holiday wear over jeans or any time you want a little sparkle: 20. I will never go up to Santa Barbara for an appointment without making a stop here. They're particularly great on sweaters and dresses. And lots of cute cheap trinkets (earrings and necklaces for 30 and under). No wonder it was voted Best Consignment/Used Clothing in SB for 18 straight years by the Independent.

The prices were very high for the worn out stuff. There were a few things that look nice but not my style I was looking for sweatpants and T-shirts with brand names. They were all overpriced.
