We had a great time at the festival. It's grown a lot in the past few years. We had family come in from South Carolina just to visit! There were a lot of vendors and displays.

Opa! It's that time of the year when you're mouth waters for Pastitsio, Moussaká, and Spanakópita…read more You're ravenous and starving. Don't worry, these volunteers give you hungry-man size portions to feed on. If you've got some room left after the main course, go for some nice "light" desserts like Baklavá and Galaktoboúreko. That too light for you? Then get the sinfully decadent Baklavá ice cream sundae with nuts, chocolate syrup and a cherry on top. Go ahead, I double dog dare you! This unassuming festival is held every year in the East Chapel Hill High School cafeteria and adjoining outdoor grounds. This being our second time around, we opted to drive for fear of not being able to ride our bikes back due to the onset of food coma and extra luggage. This is by far much smaller than the larger annual Greek Fest held at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. However, don't let the size fool you. People flow in/out of the door at a regular pace and you see tons of people packing up their little to go boxes of Greek delicacies (savory and sweet). In contrast to the huge Raleigh version we went to last year, this is by far more intimate and definitely a family-worthy event if you have toddlers and kids. While we dined outside, we saw lots of families sitting out on the lawn and enjoying the nice balmy Saturday with kids screaming and running around. We had both the Moussaká, and Spanakópita plates. Good portion sizes served with a side Greek salad and a roll kept both of us extremely satiated. Her Spanakópita was buttery and flakey while my Moussaká had that beautiful thick, rich and creamy béchamel topping with a nice crispy baked skin on top. Sure we could prolly make this stuff at home....but who wants to take the time to put the pound of melted butter in between all those sheets of phyllo or who wants to slice up and layer all those thin slices of eggplants, zucchini and potatoes? Not me. I'm looking the other way and coughing up some $$'s for this one weekend. There are tons of vendors inside the cafeteria. While you eat (or even before/after), you can browse through the various vendors looking for Greek flags, jewelry, handmade knitted items, hats, t-shirts with kitschy phrases in Greek, CD's, olives, breads, etc. It's pretty much all there. They also sell a Greek cookbook ("The Grecian Plate") in case you're inspired to cook this stuff on your own. They purport to offer some music and dancing, but we only came for the food and missed out. Overall, great venue for kids and families, and the proceeds from the festival support St Barbara's new church. Feel good, feel stuffed, and just try not to fall asleep at the wheel when you drive back home! One final tip, if you go next year, go to the website and print out the free admission ticket to avoid the nominal $1 entrance fee. FYI, they don't have an alcohol license, so don't expect to find beers here. This is good wholesome family fun. Good solid sober 4 star fun!

Held annually, on the second or third weekend of March, the Cary Kite Festival is a must see event…read morefor those that live nearby. The festival is ideal for mature audiences and individuals with small children, as both groups are easily entertained by flying objects in close proximity. The festival organizers to do a great job of: 1. Attracting attendees from a broad age group, including adults interested in testing their latest custom made kite and families with small children looking for cheap entertainment. 2. Providing simple entertainment at a great price. The festival is free, and held near Bond Lake. I usually bike to the festival, watch for about 20 minutes, and continue another hour or so of biking utilizing Cary's numerous and convenient bike trails into Bond Park. 3. Scheduling the event during the perfect time of year. March in the Carolina's isn't good for much other than unpredictable weather which includes mostly rainy, overcast days. The Kite Festival provides a great alternative activity for those hoping to break free from the Ides of March to have an easy day of fun. If I were a rich girl, I'd improve the festival by: 1. Publicizing the festival more...I stumbled across the kite festival on the Town of Cary website. Cary serves as a hodge-podge of international flair. I'd like to see festival organizers encourage participants to display some personification and multi-cultural pride on their kites. 2. Inviting some food trucks. A captive audience for three hours provides the perfect audience for a food truck or two!
