I first heard of The (Vegan) Caterer at a vegan bake sale, where I bought some cookies and picked up their business card. Fast forward a year or so, when I was planning my wedding on a very limited budget. Being a long-time vegan and animal lover, I did not want my wedding day to involve the suffering or death of any animals, but I wasn't sure what I could afford that would be delicious, that my (primarily meat-eating) guests would enjoy, and would also work for several family members with different food allergies. I seriously considered self-catering (which, looking back, would've been a complete nightmare!) or not serving a meal. After a couple of weeks of fretting over what to do, I contacted The (Vegan) Caterer just to see what my options were, still unsure I could afford it. And they surprised me by working within my budget to create a perfect summer BBQ menu for our outdoor park wedding! Josh and Stephanie were fantastic to work with. They worked different dishes around my family's various allergies (gluten, soy, tree nut). They took a lot of time answering my questions (as I was a total novice wedding planner/catering orderer) and kindly sent me reminders when I needed to send them final numbers, info, and payments---much appreciated as I was insanely busy with work and wedding planning! Our wedding was held at the Hoyt Arboretum here in Portland, with the reception in the Stevens picnic shelter there. Since we couldn't be near the reception area when the caterer set up, we had a friend meet them and point to where they should set up. We crossed our fingers that everything would be fine; we had plenty of other things on our minds! When we arrived at our reception, everything was set up, perfect and beautiful. I got to talk to Josh and Stephanie for just a few seconds, and they were very cheerful and had everything under control. I was a little nervous what my family of Southern and Midwestern meat-n-potatoes-eaters would think of eating vegan food. And they LOVED it! We got so many compliments on the food, even weeks after the wedding. The flavors were fantastic, any allergens were clearly marked, and it was a perfect menu---elegant enough for our celebration, but casual enough for the relaxed park atmosphere. After the guests ate, many going back for second helpings, the staff packaged up the leftovers for us (which we ate all of, yum!), quietly cleaned & packed up their stuff, and left us to continue our celebration. I am very glad I chose The (Vegan) Caterer and would absolutely recommend using them for your wedding/event. This was my first time using a catering service. The occasion was my birthday gathering and I wanted it to be plant based being mostly vegan. I had picked up "The Vegan Caterer" business card at the Portland VegFest last year and wanted to give this a try. I had not read any reviews at that point and had no idea whether my guests or I would like the food. The whole experience was superb!. From ordering to actual delivery, all exceeded my expectations. It was a pleasure working with Josh before the event; he answered promptly and addressed all my concerns. And the food was excellent!!! I had ordered the Tex Mex buffet and one of my meat eating friends commented on "how tender the fajitas meat is" and asked to take some "meat home". I told her at the very end that the food was vegan and I am not certain she believes me (yet). ;-) Another omnivore friend who ordinarily would scoff at vegan fare, stated that he could eat this type of food all the time. Josh was great to work with. He met with us a few months before our wedding, brought samples of items we selected and walked us through all of the options. He was super flexible on what we wanted and options to make the whole things easier. He offered to provide plates and other serving items, which, in hindsight, we should have taken him up on instead of renting them ourselves to save the hassle. On the day of the event, they hit a little traffic, but gave us a call and we said no problem, they ended making it earlier than they thought and we were running a little behind anyway, but I was really happy with the level of communication and professionalism. It really helps to keep everything going on a busy day. Josh and his assistant helped set up coffee for us, which wasn't in their scope, which was a nice touch as well. Very helpful throughout the event. The food itself was great. We had a a lot of different type of eaters and nobody had any issues, some of the meat-eaters didn't even know it was all vegan. The vegan caterer did our wedding grub just this month. We were absolutely blown away- as vegans, sometimes it is tough finding food that is full of flavor and delicious. Our guests were also thoroughly impressed; out of 100+ people my groom and myself were the only vegans so this was heartwarming for us to be able to open the eyes of our friends and family. My dad at one point had some playful banter with some friends about how great the chicken was, just to be told he was 100% wrong and it was in fact VEGAN like everything else on the buffet. On top of great food, working with Josh and his crew was so easy-going. They were regularly available for any questions of mine. At one point I had called and Josh pulled over his vehicle to chat with me about some logistic questions (set-up etc) that I had. We HIGHLY suggest working with the vegan caterer. My husband and I used The Vegan Caterer for our wedding this month and couldn't of been happier! Josh was organized and helpful the whole time during the planning process and the food was incredible! The husband and I are both vegan and have a lot of veg friends so we were excited to have an all vegan wedding where our friends could eat everything that was presented to them. My friends and family that weren't veg were actually really excited to try everything and were very impressed. I saw friends shoveling down tofu squares that I normally see eating a burger! The butternut squash gnocchi was the star of the show that night. I highly recommend this dish! I'm begging for another excuse to have a party so that we can work with Josh again. Josh and crew were amazing! leading up to the wedding, Josh was very responsive, timely, and flexible. He added a lot of really great ideas not only to the menu, but to the wedding as a whole. The day of our wedding, they arrived on-time and were the epitome of professional. We had a southern theme to the food and it was all phenomenal! The BBQ soy curls were obviously taking the main stage, the cornbread was ridiculously good, the collards were fresh and perfect, and that may be some of the best potato salad I've ever had. All of our skeptical and reluctant friends and family who were yet to try vegan fare loved it and many went back for seconds. My wife and I recently had The Vegan Caterer provide food for our wedding. The food was excellently prepared and well presented, and the service was professional. Beyond that, Josh and Stephanie did an amazing job helping us develop a menu that met our dietary restrictions (V, GF) and was accessible for all of our guests. At the end of the night, they packed all of our leftovers up for us, which has been super nice in our post wedding stupor. My wife and I are proud to have supported an organization that is 100% cruelty free, and to have exposed our wedding guests to a delicious meal that is both ethical and sustainable. The (Vegan) Caterer fed our film crew in Hood River, Oregon lunch and dinner everyday for a week. Now that's living! We didn't get to meet his co-worker because she was busy keeping things running in Portland---so Josh could be with us (thank you). Josh was so quick to respond and helpful while we tried to narrow down what we wanted in the amazing menu with so many incredible choices! Josh did a great job catering our small wedding of 30 people at a winery in Cornelius. Our guests were mostly omni's but they raved about the food. Josh was very professional, reliable and easy to work with. And his flavors are spot on. Really good recipes and he even worked up a recipe that wasn't on his list, based on my request. We are really lucky to have a vegan resource like this in our area. I'm pretty sure he's the only caterer in PDX who is strictly vegan so there really aren't a lot of options. The Vegan Caterer created an awe-inspiring plant-based taco spread for our wedding this spring. Josh is a pro. He was on time, tidy and ran a tight ship. We didn't have to worry about anything. Super late post, wedding was in September 2015. We met these folks at Portland's Veg fest, before we knew it we were getting married. They stopped by our place to help us choose food, table colors, etc and were really helpful along the way.
