I have been growing my hair out for about 1.5 years, using multiple growth and hair products to help it look healthy and thicker. I am 58 years old with fine hair that was to the middle of my back. I scheduled an appointment for a trim with Ashley. She trimmed my hair (asked me if trimming 1" off was fine and I agreed). She then blew my hair dry and started using thinning shears all over. My hair is now thinner, with straight frizz, unusual layers cut up into the mid section of my head including the sides of my head and fly away everywhere. My long straight hair is ruined. I'm sick to my stomach. I called to explain what happened and the person simply said we'll talk with her. Why would anyone use thinning shears on fine, aged hair!!! And you would think the salon would have offered to help fix my hair with a shorter cut and possible extensions -not a mention to help me whatsoever. I'm very disappointed with this salon and do not recommend it. read more

I had an incredible cut with Misty--I have never had my curly hair understood so well by a stylist, even when I lived in New York City. Misty understood my (somewhat complex, due to an I completely grown out asymmetrical cut and curly hair) needs easily, and gave me a gorgeous cut and style which will grow in beautifully. She was also both professional and warm, and I felt like I was in extremely good hands. A few days after, I washed and styled my hair myself and found out that it was the best cut I've had in ten years at least, and super easy to style. She's a lovely person and a fantastic stylist! I managed salons in Philly for a decade before moving to Dover, and was nervous about trying a new place. The receptionist was very friendly when I called to ask questions about the services/stylists, and they kindly fit me in that day at very short notice with Tammy. I have very fine straight hair and am very particular about my cut, and Tammy executed it to perfection! This place is very nice. It is a little pricey, but you get your money's worth. There are ups and downs, but I still generally like it. They claim to be an Aveda salon, but only product-wise. They do not give points for the Aveda club, sadly. I originally went to this salon for a facial because it is an Aveda salon, so you can imagine how saddened I was not to get any points for that $90 package. I will add that Kathie Lee, the aesthetican who did my facial is very talky. I wanted a quiet experience, which did not happen, even after a request. As for nails, I have gotten gel manicures there as well. They only have a small amount of choices for gel, and I began bringing in my own. If you want a red, pink or nude they have them, but I am more for the purples and glitter. The manicures were done well, quickly, and with great products. I recommend them to anyone! As for hair, I had color and cut done here as well, and while it was costly, it did not strike me as being worth it. My permanent color still faded quickly (I always get red, and it lasts about 6 weeks), and my cut did not seem any better than I could get at a local Supercuts for $40 less. Generally, this salon is a good place to go for nails or speciality hair treatments like highlights or extensions. But the facials and haircuts just did not 'Wow' me. The staff is friendly and the place is lovely, but it just does not make up for the cost. read more

When I walked in, there were 3 ladies sitting at the front desk. All of them just stared at me for a second and then continued their gossip without saying "hi!" or "welcome!". So I sat and waited confused as to if my stylist was even going to come get me for about 15 minutes until she finally came and got me. She was very nice and did what she could to my hair with it being so damaged. It was pretty pricey but worth it. They just need to work on their customer service and not look at their customers like they're irritating them for coming in. read more

I decided to get my hair colored auburn over the summer and the lady died it a dark muddy brown. I hated it so much, but I made an appointment months later with someone else and I scheduled for highlights. The lady was rude and told me she didn't have time to do my hair because she would have to do a lot of stripping first. She just told me to leave and didn't even offer another suggestion. Even if she could not do what I wanted, she could have done something to it. It's overpriced and there are a lot of old people there so I think that's all they're good at. The smell in there is overwhelming and you can't hear anything. I hate this place and would never go there again. Try Rori and co instead. read more

The Upper Cut did my updo and makeup for my wedding day. Because this place is so expensive, I did a trial run for my makeup only, but not my hair. My hair and makeup turned out great on my wedding day, but they made my mother look like she'd gotten stuck in some kind of wind tunnel. They took her short hair and made it huge! I really don't know what they were thinking, although in their defense my she did tell them to "just do what you want." They also took so long styling one of my bridesmaids that she was nearly late for the wedding. For your wedding day updo in central Delaware I would recommend this place if you know what you want and get an early appointment, but for an everyday haircut it's just too expensive. read more

I went to the Upper Cut to have a general wash, cut and style. The first thing I noticed when I walked into The Upper Cut is the smell of perming solution. The second was that the cutting stations are crammed together - there is hardly room to walk between stations, not to mention that these stations are cluttered with hot styling irons (which means cords are all over the floor) and you have to walk around other patrons who are getting their hair done. Be careful where you walk! The stylist did NOT consult with me before taking me directly to shampoo my hair. I am a new customer and once hair gets wet, it's much harder to tell where layers, problem areas etc. are because the hair melds together. I had to stop her in order to explain to her what it was exactly that I wanted. After this, she proceeded to wash my hair, which if you like to have your hair washed was great. She shampooed twice (which although I thought was excessive, it felt great!) and then conditioned. However, I wasn't given a cape to protect my clothes until I was seated at her station. The Upper Cut is an Aveda Salon. Once we got to her station, I again explained what I wanted and she did everything I asked. When I asked her to take another 1/2 in off once she'd finished the trim, she did without complaint. However, she did NOT ask me how I normally styled my hair, she just styled it. And, I'm sorry, but this is my self image and it seems a bit presumptuous to assume that I would follow standards. Finally finished (30 min total time in Salon), I was sent to the front and I was a little surprised to be charged $52.00. Sure the cut is fine, but the service is meh, the salon cramped and the ambiance, non-existent. The salon I frequented in Seattle WA, was only about $8.00 more with better services (coffee, tea and water all offered), better ambiance and stylists who took my input BEFORE pulling out their scissors. In conclusion, the Upper Cut is small town style with big city prices. It would work in a pinch but I'll be looking elsewhere in the future. read more

I have been a client for over 7 years at The Upper Cut Salon. My normal stylist is unavailable, so I have been seeing anyone available to color my hair. Unfortunately, my last couple of appointments were quite terrible. I attempted to get my daughter & I in together to cut her hair and color mine but I had to schedule two different days-not the biggest deal. So the first appointment for my daughter to cut 10 inches off of her hair was a big deal to her and the first comment out of the stylist Cheryl's mouth was, "I only have time to trim her hair-30 minutes that's all I have." No hello, how would you like your hair cut? I explained to her that this is my 9 year olds hair cut that we scheduled over 2 weeks ago and I don't want it rushed-this is important to her. If she is going to rush her then never mind. She then started to be friendlier and less abrasive and turned out a nice hair cut for my daughter. I did not care to be treated like this especially with my daughter. The very next day I came for my appointment and went to Julie for coloring of my roots/gray hair. She is nice and friendly, however the right side of my head was missed entirely and not colored. I hadn't noticed until I got home and looked in the mirror as I tied up my hair. I called them and they apologized and told me to come back the next day so she could fix it. I was told that she would not have time to blowout and style my hair after and I was fine with that. After Julie fixed my color, she had a young girl shampoo me and then I was handed a towel to dry my hair. She asked me if I needed a comb or if I had a brush. Confused I looked at her like what?? She said no one has time to dry your hair. I understand about styling but, can I get a blow dryer please? So I went to the bathroom in my cape dripping with my wet hair and used my own hair brush and tried to towel dry my hair. Another lady shampooing someone else felt bad for me I believe, and she suggested that I sit under the circle hair dryer so I didn't have to leave dripping wet. I did just that but I did not appreciate being treated terribly after having to come back a third day in a row for a correction that was not my fault. Also, each time I would come to get a trim and color the price is never consistent-sometimes it is $93, others $84, non-the-less it's not cheap. So for me and my young daughter to be treated like this-I will never be back again. Very unfortunate. I suggest a customer service training session to assist in the supplementation of the salon. read more

This place is horrible and unprofessional. The first time I went there they rescheduled my appointment 3 times before I got in. I was patient because a friend referred me. When I finally did get in for the appointment My experience there was not very pleasant. I was rushed through the hair cut and was left with wet hair. What kind of place washes you hair and then tells they don't have time to blow dry it? This place. Being a loyal friend I gave this place a second chance. I booked my appointment way ahead of schedule 5 weeks in advance so there would not be any hang ups. Would you believe they called me ONE hour before my appointment to let me know that she did not have time to give me both a cut and a color. I had to choose one! I could not believe they did this to me. I told the stylist, Tish about my previous experience and that this was not good for business. However my words as a customer did not seem to phase her for inconveniencing me again. Just bad bussiness all around. I will not be coming back to this place, and don't recomend it to anyone. read more

So I heard that The Upper Cut does a GREAT job on Bridal updos. So I went in to get a trial updo and they were going to charge me FULL PRICE for a *trial* run. They wanted $60 so I could try out their stylist and then pay $60 again for the big day. I don't think so. I then went over to Toppers at Dover Downs, and while they were $20 more expensive overall, at least they only charged HALF PRICE for a trial! I'm willing to ultimately pay more, just for the principle of the thing. read more

My hair is very dark, and most stylists usually have a hard time getting it to a lighter color, but the stylist there was very patient and knowledgeable and knew exactly what to do to get my hair looking just how I wanted it! I made a last minute decision to get my hair cut and called for a same-day appointment. I had never been there but they were close by and I knew they had been in business for a long time. Due to bad weather I was able to fit into a cancellation with Tammy. When I arrived I was greeted warmly by the reception staff and taken back very quickly. Salon is very nice, modern and well-equipped. Staff was extremely welcoming and friendly (not a word about my split ends or bad home dye job!). Tammy did a great job, really paid attention to what I thought I wanted, made some suggestions based on my hair type, etc. and gave me a great cut. I will definitely be back. Also, despite the really bad weather, the place was very busy, which is a great sign at any business. read more
