The ugly mug in the Soquel village is a super chill spot to hangout. The space is set up for people to be inside with their computers but there are also spaces where conversation is encouraged. The also have a bunch of games that are available for people to play. Their coffee is really good!! If you bring your own cup, you can get coffee from the dispenser for $3. They also carry pastries from Kelly's bakery. The pan au chocolate is delicious. I love this spot to hangout or to just stop by and grab a coffee. This is a very inclusive space that is a great location to make a third space in your life!

First time trying the Ugly Mug! The staff was super sweet and chatty, and the atmosphere was perfect for meeting up with a friend (or studying if you can handle the noise and lack of WiFi). My matcha was lovely and I will definitely be back to try more options!

Yes, I behaved like a tourist, taking videos and pictures of my experience here. I just really liked the whole vibe. On top of that, our drinks were outstanding. So was service. I saw a gigantic double-crust pie in the display, and enjoyed my first slice of whatever olallieberry pie is. The barista warmed it up and added some whipped cream. My drink was the Donnie Darko, which was espresso, almond syrup, and heavy cream, iced. I wasn't expecting to love it so much. They have a lot of local zines and stuff to read, and they have some cute stuff for sale, like the slingshot journal I bought for $12. We need a place like this where I live.

I came here to meet a friend and had a great experience. Have been here often and enjoyed it in the past too. Their death by chocolate brownies are a must try. I always love looking at their fish tank too and the coffee shop is clean. I had fun looking at their stickers and bought one. I saw a barista scraping a sugar cube on a fresh orange to put in an espresso drink which gave me great ideas to try at home! Very great drinks my chai masala was good. The baristas were pleasant and very good at their job and I felt like the coffee shop was welcoming to all people of all types which I loved. I enjoyed looking at the octopus artwork on the ceiling. This coffee shop is good for relaxing, reading, studying, meeting friends, or having a snack. They have lots of different types of milks for you and there is a bakery nearby so you smell good fresh bread although I don't think they sell it there but I'm not sure. I give the ugly mug coffee 5 hearts!

Not too sure what the cup says. It's super old, worn and most likely not part of a set, but just some random mug... I'd go back because it's a nice spot and a cool place to write, but lord only if there be a little update on the those ugly mugs lol .

We came by on a Monday afternoon and loved everything about this place. Easy street parking right out front, quirky decor and inviting atmosphere, with lovely artwork on the walls, including awesome animal paintings by Wendy Maness (oil on canvas), even a fish tank and board games near the back, and diverse seating options. There were so many great items on the menu, including ice cream soda and ice cream floats, though I went with my regular, an iced mocha. It was amazing here, fresh, cold and creamy, chocolatey, just really great flavor enough to set it apart from all the other places I get it from. My bf got the earl grey tea and enjoyed his beverage as well. The staff here was outstanding, friendly and helpful. The employee even told us that every Monday customers can roll a dice, and if we get a double, we get $5 off a purchase. We didn't get a double, but that's still kinda cool. Even cooler, they do live music here on certain days, and possibly other events as well. Love this coffeehouse, and would defintely recommend it!

AMAZING coffee! Been here multiple times and have never had a bad drink. They have all the standards plus some unique coffee drinks that I haven't seen anywhere else (and are totally worth it). I recommend the Ray o' Frickin' Sunshine: espresso, soy milk, orange zest. They also have good coffee cake and rotating quiche flavors (some better than others). The Ugly Mug is on the corner of Porter and Soquel, hosts open mic nights, and is 100% the Santa Cruz/Soquel vibe. I highly recommend swinging by if you are in the area. Plenty of seating me good music. As for service, super kind baristas, laid back and cool, and the owner sometimes hangs around and he is so funny. If you want a no-fuss coffee place, this is the one for you.

It was a great place to meet with friends!!! I got coffee from a large coffee vessel in the back--nothing to brag about, but it dis give me a caffine rush. Next time, I will have them make a fresh cup. Also, I had a cookie, and the server heated it up to make taste fresher. What I love about The Ugly Mug is that it is a place where people can go to hang out with friends or meet new friends. You can find out what is going on in the community. Hipster coffee shop. I loved the decor and the aquarium. They have been in business over 25 years. Nice to see the survived the pandemic. And....must give recognition for the most unique bathroom! I thought it was a joke at first since the door looked the size of a small closet. They managed to fit a full size toilet & sink inside.

I LOVE this place! I've been going to this place since I was a little kid. They have always been so friendly and and such an accepting place. Whenever we are in the area, we get coffee here and pick up dessert to go along with it. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Since it was later in the afternoon this time, they didn't have a lot of selection for desserts but I spotted a brownie calling out to me. It had at least 3 types of chocolate, oh my, each with a distinct chocolate-ness. We cut into 4 pieces, it felt like eating a candy/fudge/cake morsel. It went well with the latte I also ordered. Laid back barista, great cafe vibe; but the La marzocco swift and linea couldn't help the barista pull an espresso with anything more than char. His shot lacked any sort of body. Maybe he was just off his game. I would come back though, but I would only get some food and maybe a drip. read more

I must admit that my draw to this place was the name. Situated near a barber shop called the Hairy Chair, The Ugly Mug beckons you to enter. Considering it is very close to Cabrillo College, it shows. The place screams local and artsy, (no, not Bohemian). Being a former art school grad myself, I have to deem this place DEFIANT to the extent of contagious. I can't truly critique the art on the walls since... it is purely subjective :) but my overall feel of the place was comfy, not WiFi comfy, more old school chatty comfy. What I want to comment on is the fact that their basic 'in house cup' is strong, balanced and straight forward. I wish they had a few 'pour overs', purely for variety, but it doesn't seem to fit the look, save that for Santa Cruz Coffee Roasters. I appreciate that my 'barista' was typical in Aptos attitude. He told me 'he heard' that they make a good cappuccino... That's cool. I hope he's tried it unless he's lactose INT... But I can't complain, he was pleasant and informative. My husband and I take a drive over the hill for the Ray of frickin' sunshine coffee and their vegan tamale pie. The coffee gives me the perfect little boost to start my day and the pie fills my tummy for a perfect start! It's def worth the 30 min winding road! read more

Absolutely ruined my Sunday morning. I was treated like I didn't belong...even ordering a coffee, you still want to feel like a human who belongs somewhere. I didn't. I felt judged. I ordered a latte and this is the exact dialog during from a counter person, "to go obviously" by the counter person after ordering. I said, "yes" then counter person said, "good news". I then paid for my stuff (left a $2 tip, but was like...?). I stood back to wait on my drink. I then decided to (I dont let anyone talk down to me) call her on it. I repeated back our conversation to the counter person. As I turned, to leave (not making a scene) the person said, "wait, you said..." ! I wasn't sticking around for some bullshit excuse of miscommunication. I said, "nope, we're good" and left my $$. If your passing thru, hit Starbucks, Peets or Mountain Roasters in Felton if heading that way (my usual). Nothing stands out there anyways...vibe or service. Its as much $$ as any other "run of the mill" coffee shop. My second and last time there. I've only been because I don't change lanes in time. On I go next time. I donated $ right before this for balance. Don't judge me for a bad review! read more

Great coffee - strong enough vs some other shops. Yahoo! I had a white mocha and it was wonderful after a long hike nearby. Baristas were friendly and prompt. Cute atmosphere - although still take out only due to COVID. I will definitely be returning here to try other items. read more

While visiting the area we had the good fortune of getting our morning coffee here. Nice staff, great coffee and the bear claw was delicious! Great vibes! If street parking is unavailable, the lot behind is a pay lot, but it is very affordable (50 cents an hour if I remember correctly), and free on weekends. read more

i got lost on the 17 just now and got rerouted through soquel. i stopped in to use the restroom and was immediately welcomed with a complimentary shot of espresso cut w some oat milk (how did he know !!) from an older gentleman. i've worked in coffee for awhile and to this day have not felt at-home in a shop that wasn't my own in so long. read more

Great place to study (if you can find a free table), enjoy a delicious drink, and maybe some hot soup, too. I'm a big fan of the soup, which isn't made in house but is still very delish, and it's usually vegetarian or vegan. Yay! Friendly staff, huge variety, cute atmosphere. This cafe has the best coffee I've ever had. That is a big statement because I drink coffee every day and am always looking for the "best" coffee. Their della terra coffee is extremely high quality in taste, strength, and it is shade grown, ethical and organic. I have a few sips and I already feel caffeinated. And then I feel really good all day. It's incomparable. AND they have raw milk, which I have never seen anywhere else for a cafe. Me and my bf will drive from UCSC to Soquel for this coffee :P read more

I went to this well known establishement today, because on their website they advertise sandwiches, soups, panini, and when I got there, they even had a sign up posting all there was to eat. When I asked what kind of sandwiches they had, she said we don't have sandwiches, or any food of that kind. Only "treats." Hell-0 Ugle Mug. What was ugly, was that you are lame to still have food listed on your website and on a huge board inside you place, when you have nothing. I came down with friends and had to leave. I have gone in there plenty of times to support local business. Besides the weak coffee they had a few good pastries. One day i went in there during work wearing a suit and it was like i didn't exist. Took orders ahead of me and then the kid working there personally invited everyone back in the evening for music and skipped me. read more

Here tonight to see The Ronstadt Generations play. First time here. Very cozy atmosphere. The drinks are pretty stellar, only complaint is that the baristas seemed a little flustered. Other than that, great location to hang out. Also have open mic nights! read more

Love to hang around this place when I'm waiting on auto repairs, and I'd say it has the best ambience of any coffee shop in Santa Cruz county. But with that said, the coffee itself is mediocre. But hella Wifi and a very colorful cast of regulars that guarantee to make the experience memorable. read more

I dig this place. I've been going here on and off since I was a teenager, but now that I'm back in town and working nearby once a week I've been in a lot more. Baristas are always nice-some downright adorable, and even though I stumble in before work Sunday mornings with a grimace, they usually manage to get a smile out of me. So far, no obnoxious music blaring. They have good chai and cappuccino. I also love that they'll warm the pastries for you-hot cinnamon snail roll!! It's definitely a Santa Cruz type place and I like that- relaxed casual hippie vibe. I don't like my coffee shops too commercial or sterile. I say GO and relax and enjoy! read more

Cosy atmosphere and super-friendly owner! Sorry, I am not a coffee drinker, so can't comment on it. But, they do have a decent selection of teas, and have even offered me some home-grown Meyer lemon to go with it. I wish I could tolerate dairy because they also do a great coffee cake too! There are other snack-type foods too, if you are hungry, which is great when I have been. Watch out during lunch for the high school crowd from across the street. read more

There's something about this place that gives me warm fuzzies. I'm an out of towner but I felt right at home here. The Ray of Freakin' sunshine kicked my freakin' ass. Delish but so damn strong (I'm not a heavy drinker). They are so sweet here wishing you a good morning. I'd be here a lot if I lived in the area. read more

The Ugly Mug was created from a desire for a local place to catch up on events of the day with your friends. An antidote to the cubical. The Mug has become a village icon, always a meeting place, a safe place, a place for your family, a place to have a meeting or a place to play a game. Even with the addition of Free WiFi, conversation is still the central focal point of the cafe.

Meet the Business Owner: Steve V.

Steve started in coffee just out of high school, working for Peter James Coffee. Packing coffee, delivering, became blending and roasting. From Peter James, Steve went to work at the Coffee Society in Cupertino, California. At the Coffee Society, Steve really honed the idea of 'The Third Place', a meeting place in America, the land of the strip mall. When a little space opened up in Soquel, Steve knew how he wanted to fill it and Soquel has been better since. With over 20 years in the coffee business, Steve knows what he like and he brings it to his customers with great attention to detail.

Shoutout to Sophia (in training according to her name tag). She provided the best service I've had in a long time as she patiently explained their vast menu selection and exchanged genuine interactions. The double junior was the perfect size with 2 different flavors. I opted for the pistachio cardimon and the Oregon blackberry. I had a few bites of caramel/mocha flavors, which were slightly too sweet for me. Regardless, I feel you can't go wrong with any of their flavors and they provide samples. The inside is pretty cute with its retro flooring and wall decor. Plenty of tables to sit and enjoy. Small parking lot, but ample street parking around the shop. Dear, potential patrons of this mockery of a "local" business. First, being "local" is a two way street. You are not local because you buy your milk from large-scale industrial farms that have heartless money making robots running them. You promote yourself as local but this is false advertising. I have met several people who were shocked to know that you use Producers Dairy. Frauds like you will be exposed as the people are waking up to the devastating truths that are kept hidden by the money robots. Second, since you are the one who brought up respect, I have to wonder, just who do you have respect for? Do you have respect for the helpless, innocent cows that suffer a miserable existence of confinement, overcrowding, a gmo-corn fed diet, infected utters (the blood and puss of which goes right into the milk), standing in feces up to their calves day and night? Do you have respect for your customers who you let unwittingly believe that because they are buying a $6 espresso drink from a "local" small business that they are drinking milk from humanely raised cows that get to eat GRASS (their natural diet) on the pastures they graze freely like the cows from the small farms up in Mendocino (Strauss and Clover) do? Do you have respect for the environment? Every year, the average dairy cow produces 19.3 pounds of gases, called volatile organic compounds, the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District said. (LAtimes). Those gases react with other pollutants to form ground-level ozone, or smog. Clearly, the only thing you have "respect" for is the size of your pocket book. Now, before you start in with some pathetic defense like "It's hard running a business in these times (despite having one of the best locations in SC)." let me give you a list of a few of the local businesses I patronize who either use Clover or Strauss and are doing great. Surf City (Rio Del Mar & Scotts Valley) Seascape Foods Coffee Shop (Watsonville) Verve (Capitola) The White Raven (Felton) Lulu's (downtown) And I'm sure that there are many more. I strive in my own life to only patronize local and humane restaurants that support other local and humane businesses. I see this as my responsibility as a human being! As the incredible Mr. John Perkins said, "We have to recognize that the marketplace is a democracy. Every time we decide to buy something or not to buy something, we are voting. So, to shop and buy with consciousness is a big first step." The people are beginning to realize that the way they spend their money is the only real power they have for choosing the kind of world they want to live in. It is very simple. It's an espresso amaretto flavored coffee that'll give you a gnarly kick in the pants and make your taste buds do a little dance. This place is a big joke. They front like they're a "local joint" and not some corporate chain coffee shop, but when I asked them what kind of milk they used, they told me Producers. I asked if they had anything organic or local and the douche-bag actually had the audacity to pull out a bottle of Strauss organic raw cream and say, "we have this back here for us but you can't have any of it." Ugly Mug is a good community based coffee shop. The coffee may not be the high octane stuff you get at Peets, but it has a mellowness that is a little easier to drink. For a while, they had some staff that was a little more interested in noisy fun than serving coffee, but I think they have upgraded the staff a bit and the adults have taken over again. The Honey Bee was overwhelmingly heavy on cinnamon, and the latte tasted overly spicy. I LOVE the ugly mug. I really love the atmosphere there. The owner and all the baristas are super sweet. I have spent entire weeks working on the computer in there and have felt totally at home.
