I wish I could give a 4.5 as that would be more accurate, but will bump up to 5. Great friendly service from the host seating us and the atmosphere and decor is really charming in its country style. The meal portions are perfect, and lean toward large but not too large. I give the hash browns a PERFECT score - quality, taste, perfectly brown and crunchy outside with the soft shreds in the center. I will dream about these hash browns in days to come. My only constructive criticism would be that I prefer Huevos rancheros with more tomatillo sauce - it came with sauce under the crisp tortilla instead of over the shredded pork so I was hoping for more sauce - thought the flavor was there. I also added a couple of scoops of hash browns into the mix, because when you have perfect hash browns why would you not add them! read more

I just went here for the first time the other weekend for breakfast, and it was good!! I had no idea about this place, as it is a little past Fort Missoula. The avocado toast and classic breakfast was really good. The service is a bit of a tag-team as you are served by multiple people - but they were all very friendly - especially the host. I was able to enjoy the Hickory BBQ hamburger with fresh cut fries. I was also able to enjoy a peach Italian soda. All was delicious and would definitely recommend the food. The wait staff has a tag team approach. If they walk by and notice you need help they just take care of you. They have fun events based on the day. This is a nice hidden gem in Missoula that you should eat at. It's quaint, quiet and has good food and service. I have eaten here several times and have always enjoyed the meal. Yes, it is off the beaten path and tucked into rural residential area but you will be glad you came. Today I ordered the Market Club sandwich. Really, it is just a good turkey sandwich on a sourdough baguette. It is big enough to easily share--even for big appetites. The staff here are always friendly here and you will get some country charm verses the hurried city service you get in downtown Missoula. On a side note, I always laugh when restaurants call a sandwich a "club" sandwich when it doesn't have the "club.". The "club" is the middle piece of bread in a sandwich made with 3 pieces of bread. That is the real definition on a club. So in this case, while the Market Club sandwich is technically not a club sandwich, it is still mighty tasty and I will order it again. [Yup. Too good not to go! It's the old Dales Dairy C-store on Clement's with an updated grocer on the south and a new restaurant on the north. We shared the steak fries, unreal good. Could have been my dinner, delicious. Steak, sautéed onions/peppers, cheese, garlic. Will get again for sure. My wife got the salmon and said it was perfectly cooked, my New York was a bit over cooked for med-rare it close enough to not complain. Great service, and casual laid back feel. I had the steak salad and my partner had the hickory bbq burger which is a must get burger at this hole in the wall joint!! The onion rings on top of the burger were scrumptious and the coleslaw that comes on the burger was a different take but definitely a good touch and worth ordering!! Cannot put enough emphasis on the fries! We even got an order of fries to go on top of our meal. My steak salad was great. This was a pleasant surprise; with a name like The Trough, I expected something more hokey and lowbrow, with good food, but probably on the heavier side. That's not what this place is. The location is outside Missoula in a community of small farms. You enter through a little grocery store that has a pretty impressive wine selection, most bottles under $20. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere -- informal but not a greasy spoon. I went on a Sunday morning, which seemed to be a pretty popular time, and I got the sense that there was a post-church brunch rush inbound. I was immediately impressed with how well the restaurant was running. I was alone, so I was seated immediately, and from my seat I was able to observe how the manager ran operations. He constantly moved through the restaurant, keeping track of every table and communicating with his servers. When a party was about to leave, he ensured that their table was immediately cleared and ready for the next group. When more hands were needed, the staff knew what was coming and were prepared. The restaurant was a well-oiled machine, but it also appeared that the staff enjoyed being there -- they were busy, but not stressed. Of course none of that matters if the food is no good. I ordered huevos rancheros, which is one of my go-to breakfast choices when I'm in Mexico. The Trough's take on the dish is not traditional, but it's very good, almost a blend of huevos rancheros and chilaquiles, one of my other favorites. The eggs come in a skillet, served over crispy tostadas with shredded pork and black beans. Everything was perfectly cooked, light, clean, and the portion size was just right. The food also came to the table very quickly, and the price was well below what I'd expect for a meal of that quality. For my huevos rancheros, coffee, and an orange juice, I paid under $18. I've paid a lot more for much worse meals. If I have a complaint, it's a very small one -- I would have liked better coffee and fresher orange juice. I know fresh-squeezed juice might be hard to come by in Montana in April, so I'm certainly not deducting any points. As far as the coffee goes, I'm a snob and I know it, and it wouldn't be reasonable to expect most restaurants to serve the stuff I drink at home. The coffee at The Trough isn't bad -- I'm just nitpicking. I haven't written many reviews lately, in large part because I don't want to hurt struggling businesses (unless they deserve it), but I was too impressed not to share my thoughts about The Trough. It's hard to judge a place from a single meal, but if its popularity is any indication, plenty of people feel the same way I do. Next time I'm in Missoula, I'll be glad to go back. read more

Located The Trough on Yelp for a lunch stop on our way to Quinn's Resort. Friendly staff seated my wife and I outside on the covered patio. Even though close to a road, there was minimal noise. Service was good with few patrons when we arrived. Lunch was outstanding, but a little too much salt on the fries (restaurants let us salt to our liking please). Will stop again. Cute little place attached to a gas station convenience store/market in the Target Range neighborhood. We ordered the steak fries to go. Portion was good-sized and the flavors were great. This review is based off of ordering pickup through grub hub. I had ordered through the Yelp ordering option and I've never had any problems with it. It told me when it was received, being made and when it was ready. Upon arriving, I told the front that I was there to pick up an order and gave my name. After a few minutes the employee came out and said it would be out in about 11 mins. Which was fine, even though the app said it was ready. After five minutes, another woman came and told me that she didn't have the order under the name I gave but then asked if I had ordered under grub hub, after telling her and waiting longer I was told that their "tablet had gone off line" and that they would be starting on the order ASAP. I'm super patient so it wasn't a big deal but just a bummer since my friends and I were starving. They were super sweet and brought us out ice cream as we waited and apologized a ton. The food ended up being super delicious, I got their salmon pesto sandwich with fries and was worth the wait. I would suggest if you want to order pick up to either call it in or call the store first if you ordered it on grub hub just to make sure they got it! read more

What a wonderful surprise this restaurant is. Slightly upscale and rather unassuming, but good luck finding a better premium hamburger, this spot is tops. My burger was was delicious, cooked perfectly and the hand cut french fries were some of the best I've ever eaten even though they were a touch oversalted for my taste.
