I've only ever been to The Tron on 'failed' nights out. Those nights where either yourself or one of your mates is not let in or thrown out of a club and so you all go on a late night pub crawl to try your luck at salvaging the night. Unfortunately we have never quite managed to salvage the night in The Tron. This can only be expected, however, and the pub is certainly the place to begin the night rather than end it. The main area of the bar is down a flight of stairs and the atmosphere feels bustling and comfortable. Further, the drinks are cheap costing under £2 for pints which is more than reasonable in comparison to some other pubs in the area. Although not much fun when drunk at 2am, The Tron is a vibrant and popular Scream pub which would be an ideal site to begin the night or just have a get together with friends. read more

This is definitely the kind of place where you drink pints, wearing tracksuit bottoms, on the days when you can't be bothered to put makeup on. It's certainly not a white wine spritzer or cosmo sort of place. What's great about this place is how cheap it is. As part of the Scream Pubs family you get drinks prices starting from as little as £1.80, and if you're hungry then £4-5 will ensure you leave with a full tummy. There are two pool tables too, although they are quite close together which means you usually end up on both the giving and receiving end of a pool cue in the back every few minutes at least. In the downstairs section there are also loads of tv screens for watching sport, although the awful music they play will definitely make you wish you'd stayed at home to watch the footy in your own living room: the jukebox is programmed to always play the songs that are least selected, i.e. the really awful ones that no-one ever pays for, to make people put money into it to do everyone a favour and change the track. And there are lots of other things that may well put you off coming here. For starters, given that it's underground means it's dark, dingy and generally a bit depressing. Add to this the fact that this place hasn't seen a refurb in far too long, and you end up with a combination of dark and dreary mixed with shabby and grubby. But the very worst thing about here is the state of the loos. Without wanting to sound high maintenance, I like my toilets to have a) loo roll and b) a lock on the door. But when you've spent so long queueing for one of the only 3 loos (one of which will usually be out of order) you tend to just put up with it! read more

The Tron is a Scream pub, which are magnets for students. This is probably to do with their winning formula of cheap pints, fully stocked bar, 2 for 1 meal deals and quiz nights. All Scream bars thus attract a throng of people after a gruelling day of studying is over, or even when a hard day of studying seems too much like hard work. I always enjoy my time in The Tron. The bar staff are friendly, there's usually a good atmosphere and, like most, I am attracted by their cheap booze deals. The food is decent pub fayre and the service is good, leaving no cause for complaints. It can get mobbed at the weekends and it's not the kind of place that's full of Stiletto's with a backlit bar. But it's more laid back than a lot of places in Edinburgh, and for a pub in the student arena selling cheap booze it's nae bad! read more

Four of us stopped in for lunch on a Saturday shortly before noon. The pleasant server told us that due to an "accident in the kitchen," that it would be a 20-minute wait before they could start food. So, we ordered drinks and rested our feet, as we'd just walked across town and then through the nearby castle. The server, thinking ahead, took our order shortly thereafter, and the food came surprisingly promptly. My daughter and I split the Margherita pizza and had a side salad each. The thin crust pizza was good, with halved cherry tomatoes baked on top. The side salads, despite being in bowls that were impossibly small for their contents, were fabulous: fresh; multi-textured; well dressed. My wife had the mac n' cheese, and the cousin a wrap. Everyone was happy. Finally, I found the place (main floor) to be peaceful, and enjoyed the view of rain falling and the neighboring buildings. read more

You know exactly what you're gonna get with the Tron which is a good and a bad thing. On the plus side you've got cheap pints, location dead centre of town and bunch of other skint young folk to hang out with. Negatives include the "cave like" feel to the whole place and variable food. Every self respecting student probably has a soft spot for this place... so I say go to the Tron, start you're night with some cheap drinks and good chat, then role on any whatever slightly more sophisticated drinking establishment takes you're fancy. read more

The Tron is conveniently located just off the Royal Mile (but not actually ON the Royal Mile, differentiating it slightly). Prices are cheap: £2.50 for a pint of Guinness, £2 for a pint of Strongbow, and 5.49 for the basic but fine burger and chips. Upstairs there is more limited seating but nice seats by the windows, and downstairs there is even more seating, making it good for couples and small groups upstairs but having the capacity to accommodate groups downstairs. The bar staff was friendly and the service was extremely quick - we had our burgers out in about 10 minutes! This is a solid a reliable pub, but not one that stands out too much and not one to write home about. Since the price is right and the location is great, I'm sure I'll be back again at some point. read more

Tron. Serves it's purpose - cheap drinks and food. If it's the end of the month, just before pay day and you need a cheap light refreshment and standard "ok" pub grub then come along! Primarily a student venue (I felt pretty old hangin out here), current cheesy pop tunes on the boombox and cosy seating in the wee rooms off the main bar area downstairs. If you are lucky enough to have a student card you can apply for a discount card, offering money off drinks, offers vary depending on the day of the week. Location is central and everyone knows where it is, I find myself using The Tron as a navigational way of describing where things are. Tip: Girls, mind yourself going down the stairs to the toilets in big heels! It's steep and mind yer head!... Or maybe that's just me after a few to many drinkies?! read more

15 years ago The Tron Ceilidh House was a unique pub with dark corners and torture equipment hanging off some of the walls. In the years since it's gone through a cycle or two of renovations, doing its best to capture the student, sport, boozy and tourist markets. It sits in the middle of the city and does what it does with good humour and character. The pub is only a short stumble from the City Cafe and the Advocate - so if you can't get a table in the former and can't face the latter you might have found a reasonable compromise here. The pub's on three levels: ground floor captures some passing trade but isn't too big; the middle level is the largest, extending under the road; down the bottom you'll find a performance area that gets used during the Fringe. Sadly the torture kit doesn't appear to have survived the renovations, but maybe it's in a box somewhere for special occasions. read more

I have to admit that I really like the Tron, even though I know it's a bit rubbish really. It was better a few years ago but there is something about the cave like bar downstairs that really appeals. It is part of the scream pub chain so, like with the Crags, you know exactly what you're getting. They have all the same drinks (a great selection downstairs but a bit more limited upstairs), itboxes, jukeboxes, pool tables and those shooting video game things (which is appalling by the way, it never ends which is normally a good thing but this is deathly dull), and a stupid game where you can win an xbox or something similar. The atmosphere is always good fun, despite being near the centre of town you don't get too many fights (probably because of the huge bouncers outside). Although nearly always packed, there are loads of little alcoves to hide you and your friends away in, so you are not all crammed together. The bar staff are really friendly and are lenient with the yellow card deals. Another added advantage is that unlike the Crags you don't get big sports groups coming in and acting like arses, pissing everyone else off. The Tron is basically an average bar, but I have always had a good night there, and with cheap booze you can't complain too much. read more

Ah, and here we have The Tron. If you had to do that Family Fortunes type thing where you try and guess where most people in Edinburgh would name in a top five list of the best bars to get drinks deals any night of the week, I'm fairly certain The Tron would rank pretty highly in all its thrifty glory. It ain't pretty, but it doesn't purport to be, it just does what it says on the walls, so you have to admire its consistent luring of punters through its doors. Where low prices beckon, students follow, so if you want to meet a significant population of any of Edinburgh's universities, then I suggest making this one of your first stops. Having a few cheap vodka mixers to start the night off never goes wrong though, and it is all good harmless fun. Plus it's pretty much the gateway to the Cowgate, so everywhere you would want to head on to afterwards is nice and close by. read more

The Tron is a cool place in a great location, accessible to both the student crowd and the tourist crowd on the Royal Mile. Prices are generally good, but be careful what you order. Belhaven Best is a decent £2.70, but I was astounded to pay £4.85 for a Guinness! (Compared to €4 in my hometown in Ireland). There is a lot of space in the Tron, as it comprises both an upstairs and downstairs section. I've been for drinks many times, but also for lunch a few times, as there's a decent food menu, and prices are good. You can get a burger and pint in a very good deal, and the food is decent quality. One pleasant memory for me is when a group of us went and one by one, quite a few of us tried to win a teddy bear from one of those claw machines (not sure what the correct term is). That provided endless fun for us drunk students, and goodness knows how much money was spent, but we did win one! Recommended. :) read more

The Tron is one of those bars that always seems like a good idea, but then when you go you realise its actually disappointing and you should have gone elsewhere. Down a steep flight of stairs is a rather dull pub with not much going on. The drinks aren't great quality, I hear the pints are like "piss water". We once had food here and it was nothing more than mediocre. What I hate about the Tron is the toilets. Call me old fashioned, but I like to do my business in a clean environment. Maybe that is my OCD coming out? I don't know. One night I went here and out of the three toilet cubicles one was missing a door, one didn't have a lock and the other was well... you don't really want me to go into detail. I was once told the standard of toilets tells you a lot about the quality of a place. That visit put me right off for good! The Tron is very popular with students though, so it does okay and is quite busy on a Friday/Saturday night. read more

The bar is well stocked with everything you would expect and being an establishment with a large student customer base they sell some 'interesting' (read disgusting) liqueur shots with flavours like Creme Egg and Toffee Apple (I feel queasy just writing about them). It's location in the Tron Square means that it attracts a fair few characters ranging from bona fide jakeys to young emo and punky types. I get the impression that it probably gets pretty rowdy in here at night. The tables are a bit sticky and dirty, but I don't think people really mind that much. I love this pub. I love the fact that no matter when you go in, you can get a friendly atmosphere, have a good laugh, and really enjoy your company. I love that when I come here, I dont have to make an effort, the feeling is so relaxed and laid back. I love that this place does great food - from burgers with as many toppings as you can think of to chilli con carne and rice. I love the pub quiz here on a monday evening. I love the banter with the bar staff. I love the secluded booths and the open seating areas where you really get to know everybody. Over all, I love this pub. But sometimes, if it's done right, its just what you need after a hard day's walking round the City. It doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. And that's what I like about it, unlike some of the other bars in Edinburgh which make you feel uncomfortable and almost apologetic for being there in a pair of gutties. It's alright to come here to sink a couple of pints, but not really the place to have a long session. I normally come here to just catch up with some friends or to watch the football, rather than making it a pre-going out pub. It's a "Scream" owned pub so therefore is very student orientated. They have good drink prices and normally have some type of special on. Downstairs there is a pool table and a more cosy area for seating as well as a jukebox, whereas upstairs there is a quiz machine. I come here sometimes for a bite to eat too, the burgers they sell are actually pretty sicky, I really don;t know why I don't learn my lesson and stop buying them. In all fairness, the last time I went there, they were out of curries so couldn't go for a curry and beer instead ( which is a lot, lot better). The Burgers taste like they have just been microwaved, and the buns are made of really cheap bread that always crumble in your ands before you are finished with it. I guess you can't really be expecting too much, because it is really very cheap, which does make up for it I guess. read more

The Tron is a really nice pub and is relaxed and comfortable for a few drinks. It has a pool table downstairs and lots of tv screens. There is also a video jukebox which can be fun. My favourite thing about the Tron though is the food. It has a great but simple bar menu and the beer and burger/beer and curry offers are great value for money. The pub is split over 3 levels and if you go down to the first basement level the pub is set on different levels within its own which makes it really good to get a quiet spot. I really like this because it fits in with the whole old Edinburgh feel. Overall I would say this is a great place for a quick pint or a quick pub lunch. read more

I went there which my uncle and waited waited and waited for my coffee which never came(the guy said he would bring it over to us) this was mid morning and not peak time We got fed up and left and was a bit disappointed then left. Other than that the place has had a refit and looks a lot better that it one did and has more of a choice menu wise(I had a look at it). The Tron pub used to be a lovely bar when it was known as the Tron Ceilidh house, but since being taken over by the it's a scream chain it's gone a bit down hill. Decorated in garish primary colours, this place is primarily a student haunt. If you're a student you can buy a yellow card at the bar which gives you discounted drink prices, but even without it's fairly cheap. There's a tatty pool table, juke box and other machines, along with huge tv screens that seem to show every type of sport imaginable. The food is actually pretty good. Although it's mainly pub grub and stodge, it's cheap, there's plenty of it and it's great for a hangover. The Scream burger in particular is pretty fantastic. This place is very student orientated - has really cheap food and drinks deals. Students can get a yellow card which then entitles them to reduced rates ( I think the card cost a pound and you need your student ID to prove you are a student) There are 3 levels and various nooks and crannys with separate soft seating areas. The best best best karaoke place in town!! Rarely, that I didn't go there on a Tuesday while being a summer au pair in Edinburgh last year. Friendly staff, amazing DJ (there is a new one now as far as I know), good drinks, great food and low prices!! One can sing whatever you want. If it's not on the giant list, the DJ will look it up and it'll work out well for let's say 90% ;-) Awesome and fun people. After a few weeks it has been family to me!! I so felt at home!! A large pub based in city center. I've been there on many occassions mainly because it's cheap and is pretty spacious. Only once I wasn't able to find a seat so you can say that, altough it's popular, you'll be able to find a spot to sit. They have good and cheap beer and burgers offer (which I personally recomend), apart from that wide range of alcohols, a jukebox, tv screens to watch football or rugby on. Good atmosphere too. The Tron is hardly going to set your world alight, but it's still a whole lot of fun when you're in the mood. Situated in the middle of Edinburgh's Old Town, The Tron is well placed to start your night out in Auld Reekie. Just down the road there is Cabaret Voltaire and the Cowgate also offers a number of other bars and clubs. The Tron itself is a "Scream" pub and, as a result, has had much of its character neutralised by garish decor and cheap furnishings. However, due to its cave-like interior, the Tron has managed to retain a bit of individuality. Cheap drinks are the name of the game here and you can have a fun night for a fifth of what you'd pay for an average night in a swanky George Street bar. Oh, if you're peckish then you can always gorge away on a "beer and a burger" deal and get good value for money. Along with its sibling The Crags, this is a student hangout. Set over three levels with a number of various rooms tucked into Southbridge, this place almost feels haunted at times. It does a good burger for cheap, and has a good select-your-own jukebox on the lower level. You can get a table far back in a corner of one of the little rooms and feel totally separated from the cares of the world, or you can people-watch from the windows on the upper level. At Festival time there's usually a performance going on literally just outside the door. As it's a student hangout, be prepared to meet some characters here, including people in costumes stopping in for a beer and a bite. read more

It was a little cramped and there was peeling paint on the walls could do with some re-decoration! Upstairs is very narrow, but head downstairs (straight ahead down the stairs when you enter) and you get to the largest room. Lots of little alcoves and hidden corners make it a great place to chat and drink with friends, and if you get the yellow card (students) there are food and drinks discounts. There is yet another part of this 3 layered pub down another level, which can be 'hired out' free of charge for your society if people will be buying drinks. From the get go, I wasn't exactly impressed with this bar. It looked promising enough as a place to start our night out but once inside, you realise they're playing Westlife songs and their staff are needlessly rude. After being asked for ID for the first time since moving to Edinburgh in September, the bar man who served me literally threw my change back into my hand. When another friend joined us with no ID, the bar maid said it was ok for him to stay just not to drink. She then obviously told her colleague, who came to tell us that he couldn't stay - to be honest I wasn't disappointed to leave here and move on! I went to the Tron for the first time with the intention of going to their pub quiz, but due to the fact that I'm mentally approaching the "older than dirt" line and the Tron's quiz starts at the witching hour (9 PM), dinner and drinks was all I can safely remark upon today. Despite that, I feel pretty solid about the Tron. All it takes is a good deal and some good food, and Clarissa is a very happy girl indeed! I'd heard noises about the Tron being a student-centered affair, and I could totally see why. The place itself is pretty sizeable but nothing inherently fancy or unique, it's just a good ol' standard waterin' hole. What the Tron does have going for it is its deals--what better way to lure in students than by dangling a deal that includes alcohol+dinner? Regardless of who it was intended for, I took the bait hook, line, and sinker, and was all the merrier for it. Currently you can get a burger (for me, a veggie buggah), fries, and your choice of an assortment of drinks such as certain brews, gin and tonics, or some liquors all for the low, low price of 5.99. Because I ramped mine up a notch by adding some frills (pepper jack and curly fries) I was still nodding my head in approval when I saw that my total came to roughly 7 pounds. A veggie burger with cheese, curly fries, and a gin and tonic for that? HELLS YEAH! My thrifty, not-so-long-ago uni heart thrilled at this. I was even more impressed when my sweet potato veggie burger turned out to be pretty damned good, as well as the curly fries (but can you truly go wrong there?). I spent the rest of my evening out blatantly eyeballing the surprisingly extensive dessert menu, which ALSO offers a deal, this one a buy one get one special. As I was full to the rafters after my buggah though, I had to pass on that particular temptation. Just as the cherry on top for my solid tip of the hat to the Tron, it's also worth mention that our service on the downstairs section was made even better by some good banter and very pleasant service from the bartender, who was just all around a cool dudette. We went for breakfast during our honeymoon as it was walking distance from our hotel. The options were limited and the only item I was excited about (Eggs Benedict) was apparently 'out of stock' (10 am). So my wife got the steak and eggs and I tried the classic Scottish Breakfast. Steak had a lot of fat on it and was pretty dry and my breakfast was also very dry minus the sausage that was pretty delicious. I hear their lunches are much better that we didn't get a chance to try but at least their drinks were on point and the staff was decently friendly to tourists. 2/5, go to the City Cafe across the street. read more
