The Smugglers Den Inn is a 16th century thatched inn with family, beer garden, childrens play area and ample parking. The beer garden is where we like to crash and relax. While the kids play on the apparatus we chill with a ool drink in the sun and order from the menu full of lovely food and they always have plenty of specials on the board all made using the freshest local ingredients. It is situated in a little village called Trebellan, near Cubert, less than than 15 minutes from Newquay. You approach down a steep, high sided road which is typically Cornish and the pub is right before you and very welcoming. They have regular live entertainment and also have an annual Real Ale and Pie Festival which is is it's 9th year. It's definitely worth pulling off the beaten track and seeking it out for a refreshing treat.

I was recommended the Albion by my brother in-law, as he called it a 'lovely place with a cosy atmosphere'. How wrong he was. Don't get me wrong the food was lovely, and the service wasn't delayed (even though it seemed short staffed). However we couldn't ignore the (possible) owner shouting at one of her staff members, there was swear words being thrown like they meant nothing, and she wasn't giving the member of staff a moment to talk. This situation made the atmosphere in the pub feel hostile and cold, I have never seen a manager/owner lose their rag over what seemed to be such a small problem, and I'll tell you she was really going for the member of staff. This owner also was seen not doing a lot to help on bar, waiting food to tables or guiding customers to empty tables while the other staff members were busy. For all the restaurants and pubs I have visited, I have never seen an owner project her anger onto staff so viciously or be seen doing minimal amounts of work in their establishment. Overall I was not pleased with my visit, and how the owner treated that staff member made my wife visibly upset. When we first arrive it's the place we go down to to relax and unwind after a long drive. In recent years they have paved over and smarted up the garden to cater better for the lunch crowd in the summer. Sittting in the sun sipping one of their traditional ales is great - I like the Cornish Cream which I can only find here. During long summer days on the beach we pile all our stuff into the beachtent and stroll to the pub for a nice lunch and a pint. It's not a fancy place, or a theme pub, or a place full of louts but a relaxing drinking hole where you don't mind taking the kids (there are play facilities). Bond fans note the early scenes in the film 'Die Another Die' were filmed on Holywell Bay and the pub was used by cast and crew. You can park in their car park for free if using the pub or £3 for the the day for beach visitors. Alternatively there is a National Trust car park 50 yards away. Highly recommended.

Now operated by youngsters standing around chatting to each other who don't have a clue .we ordered food at the bar , only 4 tables occupied (red flag as usually full) waited approx 45 mins for food when fourth table who ordered after us got there food it was apparent our order wasn't coming ! Our order on the computer didn't go through to kitchen, so the youngsters blamed that .Appalling experience, so don't waste your time and money. So disappointing as it always was our first choice for a pub meal and a chat with the locals at the bar ( none in there on a Friday night) No food specials on the board and no advertisement of future events, live music or quiz night etc.

Red Lion is one of the better options; what would only rate as a medium-quality pub in other, more real-ale friendly towns must rank as a superior one in cocktail-bar-focused Newquay. It is a popular place especially among older patrons (such as myself), and can get quite busy towards the late afternoon, early evening. The food on offer is superior pub grub, and my dish (grilled whitefish on beetroot, with small potatoes and a rather sad "salad" garnish) was decent but nothing to write home about. While I had drinks at the Red Lion several times during my stay I decided not to eat there again. Service was down-to-earth and friendly, if a bit rushed (the place wasn't even half-full). It is a bit of a hike from the station, but it was worth it, especially as it is a really old pub (though the ceilings are low, so watch out if you are tall like me). Yeah, this pub is very British, and pretty awesome, but I came here because of the name (and there is a story behind it as well).

They serve a handful of good Cornish ales and have a few tables outside, where you take in the sun weather permitting. The do food but I had already eaten. We sampled a coffee and local Cornish ciders on draft which were lovely. Cosey wooden style modern pub with friendly staff. The location is unique and supreme. If you have dogs come and walk them on the beach and then stop for a pint..dogs are allowed.
