We ordered at the bar and waited nearly an hour for the food (they warned us of this, but I was still confused as there weren't many people there). The food could have made up for it, but it didn't. My vegetarian dish automatically came with a terrible iceberg salad that I could only make myself eat about two bites of, and the small goat cheese pastry was really boring (even though I adore goat cheese). I was still hungry after that so I ordered their Easter special ice cream dessert. The only pleasant thing about the whole meal was the cute little chick that came on top of the ice cream. I adore ice cream, but it was really mediocre and came with no toppings except canned whipped cream... just plain chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, and a wafer. Not what I expected from a special Easter "sundae"! Oy. This was by far our least favourite meal in Cornwall.

There is often pipe music or something similar playing quietly in the background, which is also nice for setting the mood. The food is served on wooden plates and bowls, and no cutlery is given unless your meal type requires it or you actually request it. The waitresses are dressed as serving wenches and you wash your hands between courses using little wooden bowls of water with a piece of lemon floating in them! The signature dish is called chicken in the rough, which is half a chicken cooked in a special oven with gorgeous crispy skin. It is served with chips although you can pick salad or half and half if you want as well. There is a great choice on the menu of starters, mains and desserts and the food is lovely. Although this is 30 mins or so drive from us my dad still prefers to go there than any of the closer ones!

As such, I really had trouble finding gastropub style places with a decent menu. We stumbled on this one after being turned away from Butcher's Bistro for our lack of reservation. Despite being decorated like a contemporary old folks home (it had a sort of corporate-comfortable feel, it was seriously odd), it offered the closest thing to a modern gastro pub and even has an amazing view of the sea. Incredibly, at 8pm on a Saturday night, we waltzed in and grabbed a table with a killer view, found local pints on the list and award-winning fish and chips on the menu. Score. Service was super friendly and food was great. Did I mention the view?! We watched the beautiful sunset from the floor to ceiling windows and made an agreement that next time we'd have the foresight to bring along a deck of cards to entertain us for an afternoon of pint swilling.

We dropped in one day almost by accident but were so glad we did, it's a really large pub with lots of little rooms and booths so you can always find somewhere quiet to sit, they serve real ales and the menu is one of those Traditional Pub Grubs with everything under the sun on it, all well cooked well priced and very tasty. The view from the back garden is fantastic looking right out over Carnon downs and across the farms and fields towards Redruth. The staff are always friendly and it's a great place to go after a long walk around the nearby Trellissick gardens, even in the summer on a weekday it's fairly quiet and would be good for larger parties or families.
