They have a little bit of everything. Prices are comparable to the bigger stores, like REI. ++ Absolutely LOVE the shared space concept! Guess I really AM a Coloradan at heart. Plus the building is formerly a Highway Department building. Neat! ++ Great displays throughout their portion of the space. Def wanting one of those Patagonia duffel bags... ++ Staff was very friendly, even though I was just browsing. The Trailhead is def in it's element in Buena Vista. We can drive by/visit BV without stopping in here - they have it all! The shopping section has all of the classics and a lot of unique clothing/items and I can usually always find something on sale. But wait, it gets better! The food is quality, healthy and delicious every time you can't go wrong with anything in the menu. Would you believe me if I said it gets EVEN better? Well it does. They have (self serve during not covid time) frozen yogurt bar. In a mountain town?? I know, so rare but everything you need when you visit. Love this place!! Staff was super nice and there were tons of gear options. Also a super cute cafe-type place is attached to this store so you can grab a snack while you shop. If you're looking for 14er patches, this is the place!! They've got them all and for a good price ($5 I think?). Would definitely visit again if I needed some gear while on the go in CO. read more

Elk burger and chicken club were both delicious. We had both with GF bread. Dad really enjoyed the simple burger. Little brother loved the broccoli cheddar penne. Only problem we had were the increased amount of flies. Can't really help that, we realize, it was just hard to eat with six or so flies bothering our table. I was in desperate need of new hiking socks, and one of the sales representatives recommended the darn tough socks given the warranty they offer. I purchased a size in accordance with my shoe size. When I got home, I tried on the socks with the hiking shoes I will be wearing tomorrow to summit Elbert, and the socks were far too small given I have a D width foot. I called the store to ask if I could come back (same day of purchase) and swap out for a larger size, and I was told by Madeline that I cannot return "worn" socks as they are now contaminated. She called her General Manager to ask for a one time exception, which was denied. I told her it was poor customer service and she said, "Well, that's the answer I have for you." I would not recommend purchasing anything from this store that requires you to try on for fit as you will be left with a useless piece of clothing. We frequent BV, and I will never buy from The Trailhead ever again. read more

I understand the desire to have sporting goods for any athlete or tourist who walks in, but The Trailhead's attempt to be all things to all people left me feeling underwhelmed. The brands were typically excellent but the selection was dismal. Bike shop and ski shop there, so if you need a repair or a tune this would be the place to stop in BV. read more

After hiking all day we went into town to look at getting a new pair of shoes since mine were killing my feet. I was really dreading this because historically my experience in mountain towns with retail stores has been terrible. Especially locally owned joints. These people were AWESOME! They treated us like they really wanted to help and make our stay more enjoyable. I was shocked that their prices were not jacked sky high. (searched purchased items on Amazon and they were identical) we had no less than 4 employees ask us if we needed assistance. All of them shared tips on hiking trails in the area. The customer service is bad. I ordered two pike peak pins for an upcoming trip for me and my hiking buddy. In the mail I received a packing slip which clearly says I ordered two pike peak pins but inside was only one MT. Princeton pin. I emailed them and immediately Jon the store manager said they would send out two pike peak pins. A week later I had another package and inside was two MT. Princeton pins. I immediately emailed and asked for a refund at this point. No response. Called, left a message for someone to call me, no call back. Emailed. Few more times, nothing. So now I have a charge on my debit card for pins I don't have. I am disputing the charge since no one will get back to me to resolve the issue. read more

We were recently staying in Buena Vista for a back country ski trip in the Collegate peaks area, and needed to rent a back country ski package for one of my friends. We went to the Trailhead, and their friendly, knowledgeable staff equipped my friend with some excellent equipment (waxless Fischer skis, boots, and poles) for $15 per day. In addition to bike and ski rentals, the shop carries a full line of equipment from all the major outdoor equipment companies including gear from North Face, Mountain Hardwear, CamelBak, Patagonia, Under Armour and so many more. They also service and sell a full line of mountain and road bikes. The staff not only sells and rents the equipment, they use it, and are incredibly knowledgeable on local conditions and activities in the surrounding area. I stopped in here on the way to Mt. Harvard and Mt. Columbia. We'd called a few times before to get a lay of the land there and an idea on what we'd need to bring and the staff was very informative and helpful. When we stopped in on the way to the trailhead, the Trailhead staff were just as friendly in person. They had all sorts of gear. Pretty much everything I had forgotten to bring, they had: utensils, whistle, compass, duct tape, carabiners, etc Their prices were pretty good too. Not too high. I did spot their fleet of rental bikes and it made me think of ditching the hiking plans to do some sweet singletrack, but we stuck with the sufferfest. Only 4 stars because the staff said we wouldn't need mosquito repellent at Horn Fork Trail and it was a mosquito breeding ground. Fortunately, we brought some ultra-thon with us and we made it last through the trip. They were good about warning us about possible moose and bears in the area. Plus the store is super close to the trailhead for the collegiate peaks. read more

We stopped by this local outdoor shop while passing thru. We wanted the skinny on the bike trails and the conditions of one of the 14ers. The staff were extremely helpful and the bike department was spot on. We got great recommendations. We hit the trails only to find one of our bikes wouldn't shift. We went back to the shop and the same bike guy quickly assessed and fixed our problem. He did it reasonably and with just a few minutes left before closing. The store itself is cool also. It's part bike shop part backpacking/climbing shop part frozen yogurt shop and part bakery-restaurant. Highly recommend! read more

OMG!! We came to Buena Vista for a mountain bike race my son was in. Once we got here (from Golden Colorado) we realized my son forgot his camelback which had ALL of his bike stuff in it! OH NO!! The gentleman at The Trailhead (I think his name was James, but I'm not positive, sorry) walked us through the store, helping us find each item we needed. We showed him the extra pack we had and he found a bladder that fit it perfectly! He even went so far as to fill the bladder up with water and install it in the backpack! The service here was absolutely incredible! If we are ever in BV again, we will totally stop back in and give The Trailhead our business!! Plus, the prices for each item we bought were incredibly reasonable!! No price gouging for visitors here like I've seen in other places we've visited this summer! Long story, but they could've charged us more money without fuss, but they took some extra steps to help us save money and provide a better experience. Great food place. Can't say for sure about their outdoor gear part since I haven't wandered over there. Local beer on tap. And great tasting hearty food that I don't have to feel guilty about after leaving. Had the bison bolognese which was super hearty while weathering the rain. Stopped in here post a backpacking trip cut short by injury. Needed a new pack after finding out that my budget REI pack didn't cut it. Luckily happened on the end of summer sale, but probably would have bought from them anyway, as their prices were cheaper than Amazon even before the sale. Long story but read it and it may save you time. So I bought a 1800 dollar bike from the trail head. Well I rode it three times and by the third ride I had no brakes. So I took it to a bike shop in Salida where the brakes were bled. Once again my brand new bike was working. Rode a few more times and sure enough my brakes were gone again. So I took it to the bike department at the "TrailHead". I was scolded for taking my Kona to another bike shop. Then I was told it was my braking style and that it was my fault my brakes went out? On a top of the line hard tail. (The brake rotor was blued from heat.) Well the rude guy at the trail head bled my brakes and replaced a cracked piston? Only for me to find he had fixed nothing at all and still charged me. Sounded kinda fishy since i rode the bike THREE times. Well I took it back to SALIDA BIKE COMPANY. Anton was quite disturbed that two brake bleeds did not hold. He actually got on the phone with the manufacture found out that there WAS a problem with my caliper and got AVID to send out a new set and upgraded me to the best brakes they have. So thanks "Salida Bike Company" for fixing my brand new bike from the "trailhead". read more
