Jack Greene - One of their overpriced, average looking and tasting burgers

A traditional pub located in the heart of the trendy Salamanca market area. We wanted something…read morereally casual for our first night in Hobart and this fit the bilL. I requested a booking online bUt it wasn't really necessary on a midweek evening at the end of January. Instead of the nice table inside, we grabbed a spot outside on the great shaded patio. Burgers and sandwiches make up most of the menu and tHere are several versions of sliders as well. We chose the eye of beef filet sliders, a side order of chips (thick cut fries) and a Cesar salad. The salad particularly tasted good after a long couple of days off traveling. Overall the food was decent but nothing all that special or memorable. Nonetheless the atmosphere was great with lots of locals grabbing pints of beer after work and enjoying the beautiful weather.

I visited this place with a group of close friends, we were excited by what locals had told us but…read morewhen we got there our reservation was double booked. We eventually got a table and began to browse the menu, none of the burgers sounded all that appealing and were all very expensive for a burger, even before adding fries/drinks. One of us ordered their biggest burger (over $22) and when it came out, it didn't look good, they said the patties and other ingredients tasted burnt and the bread was old. For a place in Salamanca, this was a poor experience and we will not be returning, how they're in business I have no idea.

A male waiter came and comfirmed they had a booking, they had booked for 4 but due to an emergency had had to bring my cousin, the female waitress said the booking was for 4 not 5 and was very condescendingly loud about it when they tried to explain, the male waitress took them to their seats in the end and was very apologetic (which was the only reason they ended up staying). When they went to pay she refused to serve them walked off and loudly told the male waiter who was in the back "they are ready to pay". The whole experience with the waitress was filed with microaggressions and racism and I would urge anyone who is a POC, especially black women to avoid this establishment. I'm so appalled that the one day these lovely mothers had to finally celebrate, they were treated so poorly, they should be ashamed of themselves

Smolt Kitchen, I'm a fan!…read more Despite being in a kind of weird location (though I am all for good dining in suburban spots), this spot is light and airy and a perfect funky little bistro. The fit-out makes me smile. It's almost like a laundromat. The service is cheerful, and after just one visit I was ready to be adopted by the woman who looked after me on my solo lunch voyage. I stuffed my face full of some delicious meat and the most delicious smashed potatoes, and washed them all down with a bloody mary (though I will admit, of those, I've had better). Now I'm looking at my photo of those potatoes again, I gotta get back to SK ASAP...

We decided it was time for some beef! Picked Ball & Chain. Walked in and immediately saw the wood…read morefired grill cooking steaks. I was hooked. The steaks looked great! Our server arrived and was as friendly as could be. We ordered an order of Toasted Sourdough Bread with a garlic butter, a Peppercorn Encrusted Porterhouse steak, and an order of Onion Rings. The Sourdough arrived and it was perfect. The garlic butter didn't have a lot of garlic which was perfect. Then came this beautiful peppercorn encrusted hunk of meat covered with a wonderful pepper sauce. Yes, the sauce made the steak. The meat was of average quality, had some gristle throughout it. The price as very reasonable so I can't complain. I would order it again. The steak was perfectly cooked as requested. The steak was served with a side of potatoes and carrots. We didn't need the onion rings but they were a great addition. Atmosphere was more of a family type restaurant. Service was very good. Highly recommend making a booking in advance.

We ordered drinks, bread and our meal minutes after we were seated. The drinks were delivered very quickly and the some bread came soon after, and then we didn't get to order more drinks for close to another 1hr and 20mins from when we were seated. We sat there watching tables around us getting served several times, in fact some tables rotated customers out and more arrived. Its disappointing to seat tables served their meals and drinks several times, mire people be seated and severed drinks a few more times. I felt like I had gained a new superpower and become invisible!! Terrible service!! If you're coming here for dinner, its easier to just put your breakfast order in!! I spoke to the manager when leaving and he apologised and then just struggled his shoulders. I explained it wasn't the servers fault, she was overwhelmed with the number of tables she was given. The manager didn't care about my feedback with a terrible attitude, zero empathy and brushed me off when I requested this be escalated to the restaurant manager and owner. He was very dismissive and rude. It's a pity, my previous visit to the Ball & Chain was great.

Belles, you are on the wrong side of town for how excellent you are and Eastern Shore folk are not giving you the appreciation that you soundly deserve. Or maybe that's just lunch times? I honestly hope so. Belles describe their menu as Asian-inspired American style food and at first I scratched my head a little, but now that I've been there, I can't disagree. The cauliflower nuggets came with a satay dipping sauce, for heck's sake! And it was perfect! I'm normally all for a burger but I couldn't help myself from ordering two snack plates as my main, because those two snack plates were already-mentioned cauli nugs and chipotle mac and cheese, perhaps my Achilles heel of menu items... I also got a spritz to drink made with Okar, which is Aussie distillery Applewood's take on Campari. So good, so good. The dining spaces are airy and lovely, some booths, some stools, and an open kitchen. The back of the restaurant looks out over Bellerive boardwalk and really the only thing missing here is outside dining on the boardwalk side, because summery days shoving Belles burgers in your faces on the boardwalk would be DIVINE. I'm already such a fan of Belles that I'm confident I'll be dragged over to the Eastern Shore to make my way through the menu more often. And I actually can't wait.
