I had a sausage and onion baguette, my wife had coronation chicken baguette, we each had a side of chips (my pet hate chips were served in a pretentious little metal bucket but that's not a dig at the cafe everyone seems to have jumped on this bandwagon). Add a drink each and it came to just over £20, maybe everywhere in Lyndhurst charges these prices but to be honest I regularly eat better sausage rolls in greasy spoons at a fraction of the cost these sausages tasted like they had been cooked a few hours earlier, likewise the temperature suggested they hadn't just been prepared. However to be fair I should point out that my wife however really enjoyed her chicken baguette, the staff were friendly and attentive, our drinks were very nice, and although it was busy it was very comfortable.

We visited because we'd seen a nice-looking ad in a "Visit the New Forest"-type brochure. But we were deeply disappointed. The decor is gloomy, and the massive teddy bear in the window was probably cute when originally bought but is now just a bit mangy. There's a weird system of attracting the attention of waiting staff by hanging a small wooden teddy on a pole on your table - an explanatory note on the door gives instructions, but there's no real reason for it and if anything it makes the staff less attentive. They don't make eye contact with customers easily. We had some sympathy for them though - they are dolled up in an almost 'Allo 'Allo-style get-up with silly headdresses and aprons. Some explanation may be found in the personality of the manager, who at one point burst out of the kitchen, patronised a teenage boy who had come through to ask whether his family's ice creams were on the way, and didn't wait for an answer to his question "is anybody waiting?" (which we were). He seemed more interested in talking loudly and ignorantly about hospitality than actually doing any, and certainly didn't create a good impression for customers or role model for his staff. When our order arrived, we were still unimpressed. A banana milkshake was mainly warm froth; the cafe latte was metallic and tasted suspiciously like Kenco; the treacle tart was doughy and unappealing and the carrot cake appeared to have had a bite taken out of it before it got to us. So much for an afternoon tea. Anyway, the details are mostly by-the-by. The upshot is that Brockenhurst is a beautiful little town, so don't ruin it with a visit to this shabby, poorly-run, unimaginative and slightly creepy little disappointment.

Another thing I like about French Confection is that if you've got time, you can sit outside and watch the world go by with a drink and a nibble, but equally if you're in a bit of a rush, the staff are quick and efficient and always very friendly. And another good thing (good if I've got the kids with me anyway!) is that they sell off their broken cakes and biscuits in little bags for very little money - these go down brilliantly with the kids. It offers flavours such as creme caramel, banoffee pie, cherry amaretto, peanut butter, strawberry yogurt, cookies and cream, crunchie just to name a few, as well as the usual favourites. You would never guess that the space use to be a old toilet block, which remained derelict for the past 7 years, before new business owners Mandeep and Jagbir Sidhu took it on. They worked hard to gutt, remodeland transform it into the bright, clean, open plan space it is now. There is comfy indoor seating as well as outdoor, with umbrellas and sandwiches for the winter period coming soon. Melt is perfect icecream parlour for every age. However if gelato is not your go, they also offer freshly ground, creamy coffee, decadent sundaes, waffles and other daily bakes. This place is growing day by day and is definitely a place to keep your eye on!

A lovely cup of Rosie Lea…read more As part of our farewell hour in the quaint village of Brockenhurst, the Mrs and I popped into this shabby-chick tea parlou adorned with vintage china cups and saucers. With a nice selection of teas and cakes, it's a nice place to sit and have a cuppa. There's also some outdoor seating with a bit of cover for when it's nice out.

Really lovely inside and the staff were brilliant - very friendly and cheerful. Had a huge amount of cakes to choose from - all fresh and on display. Had a very good explanation of them all from a young lad and he recommend the salted caramel cake. It was amazing! Hands down the best cake I've ever eaten. Me and my boyfriend also had a cream tea to share - the scone was incredible. Fresh and warm and again, the best I have eaten. We live in Bournemouth which is about 40 mins from Brockenhurst but we will definitely be driving out here again - well worth a visit. Would highly recommend!
