The Indian Spice Club - Partially plated rara chicken and plain naan

Wow is this some delicious food. I was the only visitor when I walked in, but the host found me and had me sit. Only visitor... okay, Tuesday night isn't busy in restauranting. I perused the menu, which looked fancy but not too pricy, and noticed a number of interesting dishes I don't normally see in New Jersey. That enticed me to try one - the chicken rara, nice and spicy. It came out the perfect level of spice and exactly what I was expecting from the menu description - perfect! The plain naan was rather plain, but I was using it as a conveying vessel for the rara and that was perfect. Definitely freshly baked. The meal also came with complimentary rice and I tried the interesting brown sugar lassi - I would stick with mango next time though. Between the quick food delivery and the great quality, I'm convinced I made the right stop in Steinbach for dinner. So I celebrated with a couple of gulab jamun - I got a complimentary piece of another dessert as well - and let me tell you, these gulab bring me back to when I went to buffets and ate like 10 of them. These. Are. The best. I'll go back home and will forever be thinking "I can't get these anymore, Indian Spice Club makes them better." And despite that, this place still gets five enthusiastic stars from me. Side note: Open until 10 but kitchen closes at 9:45.

If I had a magic wand I would conjure up what I experienced - the fantastic smells, the exquisite tastes, the extensiveness of the buffet dishes, and the music and decor. However all of this wonder was trumped by two people, the owners, Usha Mehra and her son Sachit. I now understand the true meaning of hospitality. Thank you.

They offer a fairly substantial buffet, condiment bar and dessert station. It's difficult for me to describe the food holders but they were top shelf...the food wasn't open to the air nor topped with a cumbersome lid one had to wrestle with. That said, I didn't have the buffet because I had a particular idea of what I wanted to eat and wasn't interested in the expanse the buffet offered. I order salt Lassi, excellent exactly how I like it. For appetizer, I ordered "Gol gappa chaat", which has chick peas, potatoes and put into a light crispy shell. Delicious! The chutney add a little extra oomph to every bit. For my main, I ordered Anarkali, whose spices penetrated the vegetables as well as the shrimp. Delicious! I ordered Coconut naan and Chili naan mostly out of curiosity...as it's not something that is often available at Indian restaurants I've visited among my travels. That said, I could not enjoy them because they arrive at my table very early and without my main...almost as if the naan was an appetizer...which is very unusual in my experience. Lastly, I could not chose between a dessert I've never had (Rasmalai) and a dessert I alway have (gulab jamun)...so I ordered them both, which was a tremendous indulgence that I enjoyed in every sweet bite. The ambiance is second to none! But the restaurant for me doesn't get 5 stars because of the service...not that the server wasn't good, she was fine, attentive etc. but the long wait for the main that literally spoiled my naan ( it was cold) is something I'm not willing to forgive. The place was busy and perhaps thats why the kitchen was so slow. The food that I had though for the most part was delicious ! Very enjoyable, I'd certainly recommend them to anyone I know going to Winnipeg's downtown area.

I agree with Anlina that this place is a totally hidden gem. The restaurant itself isn't that large but a good family sized restaurant with about 16 tables (many seating 4 with some 2s and a larger group table). Service is pretty attentive with the water refills. The buffet selection is not that large compared to East India or Ivory but it definitely offers enough for any Indian food fan to be satisfied. Some of the dishes aren't kept as hot (temperature wise), it felt lukewarm as it seemed like some dishes had been sitting there for a while. Other than that, for $12.99, I have no issues with this place! The best dishes are actually the vegetarian ones. The palak paneer was smooth, creamy and had a little kick to and great seasoning. The eggplant bhartha has great flavour and the most delicious potatoes. The vegetable korma was also rich and creamy. The butter chicken was okay - it's average, not that flavourful. The shrimp curry suffered a bit from sitting in the buffet pan as the last few shrimps I got were stringy. The spicy chicken was in a bright red sauce, though it didn't taste that spicy to me it had some good flavours going there. The vegetable samosa is baked, the pastry is a bit too thick for my liking but the filling is pretty good. The plain naan is included, a nice perk as many places charge extra. The naan tasted like it was baked as well and not made in a tandor oven so it tasted more like westernized flat bread. This place is located in a stripmall, so look for the Dairy Queen that's across from Samosa Crown on Keewaitin.

Went with the wife and daughter and where met by a rather depressed looking waitress. Took our seats Noone came near us. Finally had to go up and ask for Nan bread. Up for our first round of food and most of the trays only had the sauce in them. Wife went for tandoori chicken and it was well undercooked. ..still pink. Pointed this out to the depressed girl. Not much response. Nan bread arrived yuck greasy. Had to walk up to the counter again to ask for water and a beer. 20 minutes later the water arrived...Luke warm from tap. Beer wasn't much better. Had enough and went up ask for owner or manager no one there. Complained about food and got a blank look from the charming waitress. Paid bill and walked out!!!!! Never again .Avoid I'd give no stars if I could

Pair it with their naan bread, which is soft, fluffy, and comes out piping hot, and you've got a perfect meal right there. The buffet also deserves a shout-out -- it offers plenty of variety with something for everyone, from meat dishes to vegetarian options. At least it seemed like that from the outside. I didn't have the buffet so I can't speak on what my experience with that is like. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and portions you get, and the service is friendly and welcoming. The restaurant itself is clean and inviting, with a relaxed atmosphere that makes dining here enjoyable whether you're solo or with a group. If you're in Winnipeg and love South Asian cuisine, Chili Chutney is a must-visit -- consistently great food and a truly satisfying dining experience.

Chicken, lamb, goat curry of all kinds are available here. Prices are reasonable too. One of my coworkers who's Indian actually told me if there's an Indian place that he'd order from, it's this one. I had the Railway Lamb Curry, which is boneless lamb with a tomato onion masala gravy blend. There seems to be a bigger variety of Indian dishes here compared to places like Cilantro's and Shahi Flames. Overall I found the lamb curry to be really good! The lamb pieces were juicy and plentiful, and the curry was creamy without it being overly salty. Very busy restaurant so expect a bit of a wait for your food. Considering the lack of Indian restaurants in the southwest quadrant of the city, Chili Chutney is a welcome addition to the area.
