Fun little taco restaurant in the San Diego downtown area. There's free street parking right outside that we were lucky though to snag. It's a small restaurant but there's plenty of seating inside and out front. Giselle took our orders and was great at recommending their favorites to us. The tacos were large and prices were very reasonable. Ordered the carne asada and the camaron tacos this time. Orders are made to order. Delicious! A local taco stand a bit off the restaurant and tourist row that gets alot of traffic on the weekends and a bit more controlled from the admin businesses and local residents. I say this because you may catch a line depending on when you go, but it is worth the wait. The fact that they are staffed for speed you shouldn't have to wait more than 15 min from out the door. Seating is somewhat limited because they have a huge kitchen but based on how log it typically takes to eat you wont have long to wait for something outside or in if a sit down is what you want. for every 3 rd person I saw order in there was a "get and go". The food taste and appears to be fresh and not pulled out of a soak pail where the protein was cooked hours ago. Plenty of seasoning, choices and drinks. The Taco Stand in La Jolla was one of the best taco experiences I've had in my life, so we had to check out this location in San Diego. This location does not disappoint. We went twice last week. Once on a Wednesday night as dinner for the kids. There was about a 15 minute wait as most ingredients are made to order - fresh corn tortillas and grilled meats. While we waited, we watched the chefs make our food. Upbeat music was playing and the employees were having fun. Kids had trouble finishing their tacos even after me taking my obligatory dad tax. Friday morning, we stopped in as they were opening. It took them a while to get started prepping meats, so unless your order was egg based, you'll have to wait a bit. We waited about 25 minutes being the first customer to get our order in. The food? You have to get their tacos. The fresh corn tortillas, large portions of taco filling, and the plethora of salsa options makes for a very memorable and customizable dining experience. I will usually get some combination of Baja (fried fish), Asada, Camaron, Pollo, and Al Pastor. I don't think you can go wrong with the tacos. They are on the bigger side, so I think most people would be happy with 2-3 for a meal. One item that I thought was just ok was the Pollo Ranchero Burrito. By going burrito instead of taco, you lose out on fresh corn tortillas and get a premade large wheat tortilla. The chicken is the same as the taco - well seasoned with really good char-grilled flavor. The other things were fine - rice, refried beans. I believe there is a convenience factor in just having everything in one wrap, but this burrito was a bit flimsy and a bit of a risk if you're eating it on the go. Been to a couple of their other locations in SD area but not this one. Cashier was friendly. There's slightly more indoor seating here than the other locations as well as outdoor seating too! Came around 11:45 on a weekday right before the lunch rush so only waited about 10 mins for the food to be prepared. Like their other locations, my tacos had a generous amount of meat. My go-to is carne asada, al pastor, and pollo asado which were juicy and flavorful. I accidentally ordered to this location instead my go-to in North Park and was readily reminded of why I avoid this location at all costs. The service is rushed in how they interact with customers, how they prepare your order and evidently with this visit, in how they prepare their ingredients as well. I ordered 3 burritos via online ordering. Came in 20minutes past my expected ready time and still had to wait another 20min onsite. The wait wouldn't have been as irksome if not for the fact that every burrito was hurriedly "wrapped" in foil with bits and pieces exposed due to sloppy wrapping of each burrito. And to top it off, one burrito had pieces of avocado skin WITH THE STICKER and all inside. Of all the taco places we tried while on our visit to San Diego, this one was my favorite. They have a salsa bar with a hood wide variety, the also have pickled onions and carrots. The salsa variety here was great and I really enjoyed the salsa verde they had here. We ordered a variety of tacos and burritos to try as well as a bag of chips. It was a legit sized bag of chips that was quite large. They had run out of the cactus tacos which we had wanted to try. It could have used more seasoning, but the generous portions of tortilla chips were salty enough to add some more sabor. And the burrito? It was huge. Ventured off and tried one of their "secret menu" items: the Carne Asada Volcan, which essentially is a tostada with melted cheese, asada, guac, onions, cilantro, and some mild salsa. While this is a chain of restaurants, this downtown one is a good location for a lunch stop for all of the offices that are around there. It is always a line whenever I walk by. The food itself is pretty decent although I wouldn't say it's my favorite taco shop. They make their tortillas in house and you can really taste that and everything is made to order so you may have to exercise some patience. On my most recent visit I got a pescado (mahi mahi) burrito and felt that there was a bit too much sauce and too little fish. But their chips, guac and other salsas were good as per usual. read more

The Taco Stand is a very humble little eatery in downtown San Diego that serves (hands down) the best tacos I've ever had and I've had plenty. Vibes: The space is quite small with limited seating. I went in intending to get takeout, but ended up dining there when I spotted that ONE unoccupied table. Crowd: Not only was the seating packed, but there was also a line, but it moved fast. Right away, I knew this place had to be popular and clearly knew what they were doing. The staff efficiently handled the orders and served food promptly, even during busy times. Bites: My husband and I ended up ordering quite a bit. I ate too much and didn't regret it. For appetizers, we got the guac & chips, and they make their own chips, like actually fresh and straight out of the hot oil. The chicken taco was amazing, honestly, exactly what I expected: smoky, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. The Baja tacos were just as good, it was crispy battered fish with all the right condiments. Top notch. We also tried mushroom tacos and cactus tacos. The cactus taco was surprisingly good, something totally unexpected but so tasty. The mushroom tacos were okay; not bad at all, but compared to everything else, they were just alright. My husband and I loved this place so much that we planned to go back the next day to try their al pastor. Unfortunately, that didn't pan out. I know this because I walked in three separate times this Friday night and they were running 20 to 40 minute waits without telling people in line how long it would take to get their food until they got to the front. Super frustrating. When I witnessed that they only had one employee per station and one person on the grill who was effectively responsible for making all of the food, it is abundantly clear that ownership doesn't give a s*** about you as a customer. We walked from our hotel near the coast and it was pretty crowded - I noticed that while we were only 3rd in line, the line wasn't moving because the staff was calling out orders. No judgement - they were busy, but it's why orders weren't being taken. I recommend ordering online... I go the shrimp burrito, baja burrito, and mushroom taco. My mom got the carne asada and loved it. I though the mushroom taco was meh, and the shrimp burrito was pretty good, but I wish it had rice and beans in it. However, the flour tortilla was good, and do I even need to say how good the fresh corn tortillas were?? Supple, warm, and delicious, just wow. The salsa bar is excellent and the food is reasonably priced. It did, however, take a pretty long time. I think we went on a Friday night and I made the fish taco order separately. Ordered my lunch online last Friday for an 11:30am pick up. I placed the order a little after 1045am. (10:49 to be exact as per the receipt posted) I get there at around 11:31. Check in with the employee at the counter and she says its not ready yet. No apology given. I proceed to wait for 10 minutes and that is when I start to notice people who ordered their food in person around the same time I checked in for my pick up. I then go back to the counter to ask what the deal is and they said its because what I ordered (carne asada fries) and that basically order time is depending in what is ordered. I then bring up that I ordered and paid for my food approx 45 MINUTES AGO WITH A PICK UP TIME ON MY ORDER. (No I did not raise my voice.) The lady at the front counter once again repeats herself that it depends on the order that will determine how fast it will come out. Once again. I was not given any sort of apology. More like she tried to make it seem like I was the wrong one in this situation. As I leave she then says " Thank you!" In the snarkiest tone ever. I was so upset that I reached out to taco stand via IG comment and DM and they DELETED MY COMMENT and never read my DM. I also emailed a complaint through the taco stand website and no response given. Never again. Ill be reaching out to my credit card about a chargeback. This is the wildest service I have ever been given at any taco shop. TL;DR: ordered and paid for my lunch in advance with pick up time. Order wasnt ready at arrival. People who ordered in person got their food before me. Front counter/cashier employee gave me an attitude and made me seem like the bad guy in this.
