The prices are really reasonable and you can choose to pay what you can or even work it off. You can also pay it forward for someone else to get a nice meal. This is a pay what you can, pay it forward to help others if you can, roll up your sleeves and work for your meal setup. So, you might think...ah, cool, enjoy your canned soup and turkey sandwich, I'll go to a "real" restaurant. This would be foolish. The food is every bit as good as you'll find in a more traditional, for-profit setup. They focus on locally sourced ingredients and have a seasonal menu as a result. The food is delicious. Menu is delightfully trim but with something for every taste (salads, soups, sandwiches, sides). Had some meatloaf sliders with pimento cheese when I was there that I'd like to replicate at home. My friends raved about their selections as well. Service is amazingly friendly and attentive. I'm not sure anyone's glass dropped below half-full. And the servers were happy to share the stories behind the concept, which showed the pride they had in the venture. Everyone is welcome here. The Table is celebrating their 10th anniversary in the Portland neighborhood. Prices are modest and you get a lot of food for the money. Normally I don't like ham all that much but the ham and havarti cheese sandwich looked promising. It was very good and huge. My wife and I had leftovers. We also shared a basket of fries for $3 that was hot, fresh and more than enough for two. Service was great and and I also had coffee and a refill. It's really quite a bargain. read more

What an amazing concept for a restaurant! We stopped on our way through Louisville, and I'm so glad we chose The Table. I had no idea what to expect going in, but left the place blown away. Food and service were both incredible, and the entire concept of the "pay what you can" or "will work for food" is amazing. A clean, lovely space. Everyone was extremely welcoming and service was spot on. I had the Strawberry-Asparagus salad (strawberries, asparagus, and manchego cheese on local lettuces in strawberry vinaigrette with chia seeds), along with a cup of the soup of the day, which was a rich, thick Gumbo. Honestly my only complaint is the hours. They are only open M-F from 11-3. I was only able to come here because I met a client nearby and it just so happened to wrap up at noon. Please consider offering a weekend day, Table, I think you will find many of us wage slaves who are M-F workers would love a chance to come here and try your amazing food! This place is nicely tucked away in Portland. Very nice place on the inside and I love its cause. The service was fast and easy. The menu is not very big so shouldn't take you long to pick. It doesn't take them long to bring the food out. If you are looking for a lunch spot to go to that is quick, this is it. I ordered the smoked chicken sandwich that is on the menu all the time. Some of the other items change out with the season. The chicken sandwich was on jalapeño Bread with a bacon jam and ranch on the sandwich. The sandwich was very good. The jam was not a strong flavor so was surprised by that. If I didn't know it was there, I wouldn't have known because it didn't taste like much. I also got the Parmesan fries. I will definitely be back. Service was great, fast, great prices and decent prices. For 2 people, we got tea, sandwich and fries, it was only around $27 as suggested on the menu. We walked in after 2:30 this afternoon (they close at 3:00) and were warmly welcomed and guided to a table. It was still bustling, but not loud. Let's Stay Together, by Al Green, was playing. They promptly provided a high chair, coloring books, and crayons for my children. This is undoubtedly a family-friendly atmosphere. The service is some of the warmest I've encountered in any area restaurant. The Table has seasonal menus offering locally grown food that is accessible to everyone. This inclusive concept allows patrons to pay it forward by volunteering with time and services as payment (pay what you can), paying the suggested meal price (plus some if desired), or by volunteering your time to "pay" for a neighbor to eat. We ordered the following: Meatloaf Sliders- (2) Sandwich meatloaf topped with pimento cheese, house pickles and greens on brioche slider buns Parmesan Fries A (side-size) Watermelon Salad basil watermelon, cucumber, red onions, peppered farmer's cheese, local lettuces, cilantro lime vinaigrette (also available in a larger portion) A (side-size) Summer Squash Salad charred squash, sun-dried tomatoes, sunflower seeds on fresh greens with roasted eggplant dressing (also available in a larger portion) And TWO Kids' Classic Grilled Cheese w/ a side of fruit. She encouraged us to take our time, despite the restaurant closing. Every employee we encountered was hospitable. The ambiance was uplifting. Our meal was a crowd-pleaser. I appreciate the availability of healthy food options at cost below that of a fast food drive-thru. I often see inquiries about the best places to get salads...take note. The roasted eggplant dressing was extraordinary. The combination of watermelon, basil, and peppered farmer's cheese, tasted fresh and refined. The pimento cheese and house pickles on the meatloaf were exceptional. I found myself dabbing my fries in the roasted eggplant dressing as to not miss a drop. If you work downtown, or if you don't, this social entrepreneurship (non-profit) offers guests an opportunity to dine with a purpose. If you're a Louisvillian, patronizing The Table is a chance to give love and build relationships in our community. Omg, new favorite lunch spot for sure. I've been wanting to try this place for over 2 years but the days/hours of operation always didn't seem to be right when I was thinking about it. But today I got there and holy crap I have been missing out. I ordered the Veggie Pepperoni sandwich and the watermelon salad. They were both sooooo good. The smoked vegan pepperoni is so flavorful, the bread so soft and the red pepper cashew cheese so smooth and creamy. The watermelon salad was so fresh and crisp with an amazing flavorful dressing. And to top it all off when I went inside to pickup I was greeted with amazing smiling faces and great customer service! That's not something you see too many places anymore. Awesome place! We were excited to support this farm to table business and appreciate them giving back to those who may need some assistance. Everything was delishhh from what i was told by my collegues. Plus the portions were pretty big for $5-$7 sandwiches. I personally had the falafel sandwich and some sweet potato chips. The falafel sandwich was suchhh a good choice! Felt healthy, had some freshness from red cabbage plus hummus in it yummm! Went here with coworkers for lunch, and it did not disappoint! We were greeted right away from the nice server who asked us what we wanted to drink. We received our drinks quickly and then another nice server took our orders. This cafe is a pay what you can eat offering locally grown fresh ingredient soups, salads, and sandwiches. The menu is small, but everything looked appetizing. I got the grilled cheese and surprisingly, it was served with apples, which added to the fantastic taste of melty white cheeses and the walnut wheat bread. I also got a small order of the roasted root vegetable salad. It was very good and wasn't soaked in dressing. It was just the right amount of beets, carrots, walnuts, and smoked blue cheese. After wanting to go to this place for several years I just had my first opportunity a couple of weeks ago. I love the mission of the restaurant of helping people who are unable to pay for their meal there. They also have other programs for people there at different times than the restaurant. My friend and I wanted to pay some forward so that opportunity is there if you want it. You are only asked to pay what the price on the menu. I am a pescatarian so I got their vegetarian dish. It was really excellent and was very filling with a cup of three bean soup a well. The service and all of the people we interacted with at The Table was all very pleasant. They make everything from scratch in house, too, which is why you should get there early to be sure they aren't out of any of the amazing sides! During this visit I ordered the Smoked Chicken Sandwich. It comes with a pile of steaming pulled chicken topped with bacon jam, ranch, kale & red onion on a cheddar jalapeno bun! It is delicious, messy in the best possible way, & the bacon jam is everything! For my side I chose the pasta salad. It is seriously THE BEST pasta salad I have ever tasted. It has rotini pasta, peppers, red onion, parmesan cheese & a smooth house made dressing to blend it all together. The dressing tastes like caesar, but with some extra Italian spices. The food was excellent and surprisingly (based on location) sophisticated & upscale! Gordon Ramsey would be so proud! The service was amazing. We had so many people tending to our every need. We had at least 4 or 5 servers asking us about refills. The prices were ASTONISHING! If this restaurant was in suburbia, the prices would be multiplied by 4. We had a group of 14 and they put us in a large, quiet, private room. We called a few days ahead to let them know about our large group. The room was perfect, especially for the kids and hard-of-hearing grandparents. Speaking of kids, they had a great kids' menu too! The bathrooms were very clean, with a hint of bleach smell; perfect in my opinion. The only thing to be aware of is that this is not in the best part of town and the only parking is parallel on the street. However, our group had four cars and we all found a space close to the door. We did not have any problems in the neighborhood. - Lastly, this place gushes with the "love your neighbor vibe." If you eat here you will feel it. The best french fries I've ever eaten! We've tried an assortment of sandwiches and salads, pork, ham, veggie cheese and sides -- all delicious, healthy and filling. The usual suspects of dishes that are often fatty and greasy elsewhere are not so at The Table. Can't recommend this restaurant enough for the food alone. I happen to know the place buys raw honey from local beekeepers, and they are very community -- neighborhood oriented. Wow! All of the nicest people in town work here! Almost every volunteer greeted us! I don't think they have actual workers, they are mostly just kind, sweet-hearted people who want to bring the idea of social enterprise to Louisville. I'd love to see more like this! You can also pay it forward too which is cool. It's not hard to find parallel parking out front since it's quiet during the day. My two friends and I came at 1:40 and there were a few people in here. We got seated quickly. I ordered sweet tea which tasted so fresh! It's some of the best I've had in Louisville right along with the sweet tea they've got at Cunningham's. They also do a great job of refilling your drink for you as soon as you've got about a third left. Anyway, I ordered the meatloaf sandwich with Parmesan fries. So filling! It had beets in it and cheese. The meat was also very tender. Very good! And not a bad price for the sandwich at $7. The fries are nothing fancy. Just fries with cheese sprinkled on top, but I liked the crunch of the cheese and the seasoning on the fries. My friends split the pulled pork sandwich which had BBQ chips on it. They liked it! No sauce on it but yet was still tasty. The chips also have a nice crunch. They both paired their halves with salad. One got strawberry asparagus and my other friend got a house salad. They both liked it a lot and truly loved the price even more. They gave us all the orders on one ticket, but had no issue splitting it for us. We walked up to the counter to the right side of the room to pay. I like the space though. It reminded me of the inside of a cabin. I had been wanting to try this place for a while and finally went for lunch to celebrate my brother's birthday. It was a little bit further than I usually venture, but the restaurant is a nice space. The concept is great also. Fresh food and the price on the menu is a suggestion. You pay what you can. The servers are volunteers from what I understand. From the moment we walked in they were very attentive and welcoming. They gave us the run down on the menu and gave suggestions. There were 3 adults and my 2 year old son. The kids meal was a great deal and hefty portion, grilled cheese and bowl of fruit. We got a variety of salad, soup, sandwiches, fries and homemade chips. At the end of the meal they offered us cupcakes- pumpkin, which were really yummy, very light and delicious. The whole meal was a great value of local foods. I wish I was closer to The Table, I would go all the time. It is a service based restaurant that is pay what you can. The staff is made up of volunteers and people that are working to earn their meals. The prices on the menu are suggested prices, you can pay more or less, if you like, you just have to inform the cashier of your plan. I have been to The Table a handful of times and the food it always good. They have lots of space for seating (make sure to look in the back area) and the services to great. Very friendly and helpful. Desserts are not listed on the menu but displayed on the counter and looked amazing. If I was not trying to stay away from sweets, I would have ordered them all.
