My Wife and I have never been disappointed stopping here for a casual lunch. Food is good, prices reasonable, and a friendly staff. We were dissapointed a few years ago when they stopped staying open past 3PM, so dinner is not an option, except Fridays. They do a 3% charge for plastic payment. So we always plan on paying cash. Anything you order here is good but I absolutely LOVE the chicken and egg salad. I especially like that the egg salad is available as a melt with Swiss cheese on toast or a croissant. Glad to find a good place for breakfast close to the Country Inn and Suites. (IMO the breakfast at Country Inn has gone downhill over the years.) We enjoyed friendly, efficient service from our server at The Sycamore Cafe. Coffee cups were never empty. Nothing fancy here, but all-in-all a good breakfast. My choice of scrambled eggs along with bone-in ham was quite tasty. I always look for bone-in ham when traveling in the Midwest. (Hard to find in California!) I substituted a fruit cup for potatoes. The calorie-counter in me always like that option. My only complaint on my breakfast was on the bread. I wanted something other than "white" or "wheat" toast so opted for the English muffin. It was on the tough side -- only ate half. Others in our party of four seemed to enjoy their breakfasts, too. Poached eggs were done perfectly. Such a raining day decided to give this place a try since I'm new to the sycamore neighborhood .. decided to stop by around 1:30 pm. They are very racist here. I watched the difference between a couple of Caucasian and compared to myself the service was TOTALLY difffeeent. A couple came in after me I watched their server gave them the soups of the day and gave water with straw. On the other hand I wasn't given a straw for my water nor was I told the soup of the day. My waiter was totally disrespect totally messed my order up. I ordered the cafe combo instead of the French toast I wanted to sub it out for pancakes. She so ignorant and disrespectful instead she totally took out the meat/protein and only gave me hash brown cheesy eggs and pancakes without asking me I'd this what I would like. It appear the whole place appear racist because when it was time to leave I saw the other waitress asked how was their food and could she have done anything to make ur more pleasurable. Not one time did this stupid broad stop to ask was everything ok. When she brought the plate with the syrup in it she put the plate and at the edge of the table causing it to almost fall off the table. Great fish fry tonight! I had the fried cod with french fries (the best fries around!) and a cup of excellent clam chowder soup. My wife had the hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. I tasted the awesome brown gravy they smother the beef and potatoes with, and it was delicious. As always, Jetmire Ballazhi Rushiti and her staff were pleasant and efficient, without making diners feel "rushed". The Friday fish fry offers two kinds of cod, fried shrimp, Tilapia, or Salmon- with either soup or salad and dessert. The prices are very reasonable, and the quality is very good. Tonight was my first time trying this place out and it didn't disappoint! I don't know what I really expected when I walked in, but I was hungry and they were open so.. I ordered the chicken salad no bread and fries. I was happy to see it also came with a 2oz portion size cup of coleslaw and a pickle spear. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars was because both the chicken salad and coleslaw were both warm, and not cold like they should have been. I understand the food sits under a hot lamp for a minute or two while the waitress or waiter collects it from the kitchen.. but I'm just hoping it's not for another reason. We went on a Sunday and pulling in we knew this was the place to be. This is your typical diner feel type restaurant and those are a personal favorite of mine. You know going in that breakfast is something they'll do well. We got several different dishes: a biscuit and gravy skillet with over easy eggs on top. Which was the size of your face and definitely would fill up even the hungriest of patrons. My daughter got the giant special for only 10.99 and it came with 3 huge pancakes, eggs, and choice of meat: ham, bacon and sausage links! One kids breakfast that was good portion; since he's 8 he has an appetite. Then my husband and I got omelettes. One ham and cheese and one Mexican one where my husband also added chorizo in his and it was LOADED. Plus they made the omelette the correct way in my opinion. Where your toppings are cooked into the egg rather than just sitting in the folded over egg. Which I hate because it falls all over. This way with it cooked inside you get all them yummy toppings in each bite! Then the omelettes came with toast and hash browns too. I added because I love bread and carbs, a pecan roll. Which they slice up and grill on flat top. Oh my! It was basically 2 pecan rolls. Very tasty! Waitress was on top of it despite the morning rush! Mom had the sycamore cafe skillet and was thrilled how delicious it was. Hashbrowns are run of the mill frozen hash browns, no seasoning and only a light golden brown. We had to make a run to Farm & Fleet. The area is peppered with the standard chains, which held no thrill at all. We spotted Sycamore Cafe across the street and decided to give it a try. All in all, it wasn't bad. Christopher had a patty melt with fries. He really enjoyed the fries. They are the kind that are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I had the Swiss Steak with mashed taters. It was your basic diner fare, edible but not memorable, although the soup was quite good. Yes, I have had better food, but I've also had a lot worse. This place hit the spot when the thought of another chain restaurant made my skin crawl. We chose the Sycamore cafe for breakfast/lunch after a night of bar-hopping. We should have been warned when the parking lot was practically empty, but alas we decided to eat here. Nothing was all that terrible, but nothing was really good either. And it was relatively expensive. Over $50 for 4 people to have breakfast? We all had the cream of chicken rice soup, which was lacking in chicken flavor. I had the club sandwich, which was ok except for the dry turkey breast. French toast was blah, and a chef salad was so overloaded with meat that it barely had any lettuce. The hot ham sandwich had a weird tasting gravy. Had lunch here with my ex-wife and her mother (save your jokes, please). I had a burger (as always), I cant remember what my wife had, and her mum had a salad. Total came out to about $20. The food was pretty good, the staff attentive, and the atmosphere was reminiscent of Baker Hill in Elgin (on Rte 25 south of I-90). Update March 2013: went back with a friend for breakfast recently. Had 2 eggs (scrambled), sausage links, hash browns (why is it that everyone everywhere undercooks the hashies? They're called hash BROWNs for a reason), toast, and a raspberry tea. Not bad for $8. My buddy had a steak breakfast with the same options (toast or pancakes? sausage patties or links?) as I had, I think it was $12. Not only was my food barely cooked and mostly served to me at room temperature, the wait staff was more interested in talking to each other than bringing us our food and drinks. No refills on my drink despite being empty for over 20 minutes, and never checked on us after dropping off the food. Place looks nice from the outside, but I'd recommend not stepping in. Their daily soup, which is included with deluxe sandwiches and dinner, changes daily and is great...nice homemade taste and ingredients. The hostess and servers are all very attentive and friendly. I really like this restaurant. The food is reliable and might be your typical Greek restaurant food, but there is a reason, they know how to do food right! The tuna melt, patty melt, pork tenderloin are my favorites. Other family members' favorites are breakfasts including pancakes, which you can get any time of day and the pasta dishes. The salads are fresh and tasty too. The one thin I don't like is that they changed their rolls and serve them in plastic bags which I'm not a fan of, but I bet it cuts down on the waste. I would much prefer them coming to the table with a house basket where I could be served a roll and then they could take the basket away. Get rid of the rolls in bags and just serve a basket of crackers and breadsticks... it's tacky. read more
