My date and I were headed back Metrowalk after a concert at the Metrotent, and were up for grabbing a late night snack. Just as soon as we entered we noticed a new establishment that seemed like it literally just opened, as the signage above only displayed traces of the restaurant that used to occupy its spot. A jolly, scrawny, adorkable waiter stood outside and gave us free samples of what looked like eclairs at first, but upon closer inspection turned out to be... Turon with cupcake frosting on top! They were super yummy, and we were sold immediately.
It turned out to be a soft opening for The Sweet Life Café. We approached the counter where all the desserts were displayed and the woman behind it, obviously one of the owners, greeted us with an infectiously cutesy and chipper smile and sounded off their menu for us by memory (their menus weren't printed yet.)
We were so delighted at the idea of "gourmet turon," we ordered 3: rocky road, salted caramel and strawberry. While the strawberry would have tasted better with sweeter jam, we loved the other two. It helped that they ditched the frosted sugar on the turon, and used bananas that weren't too sweet. The soft cupcake icing and gooey, sweet sauces complemented the turons' crunchiness. We finished everything real quick. The owner urged us to try their cheesecakes next time--and you know what? We really want to, and definitely will. Oh, by the way, we got a melon milkshake on the side, and I loved it too. Who cares that my throat hurt after from all the sugar? We had some gooood dessert. Good dessert makes all my woes obsolete.
I dig this place. It's also connected to a nautical themed restaurant, but we didn't get anything from there. But digressing, it's adorable--and open late at night!! And that combo of cutesy, sweet-tooth-satiating and open late just wins for me. By the way, I should mention that their Turonne De Manila won a Best Dessert award at Mercato Central's The Next Big Food Entrepreneur competition last 2014! read more
