    Hanami - Large platter!

When you are craving sushi, head to Hanami on Riverside! I have been trying to find a decent sushi…read moreplace in Brisbane and am very pleased with my first sushi experience. We made evening reservations and our table was the best one in the restaurant. Our table overlooked the river and we had a gorgeous view of the Story Bridge. Our host and waiter, Ming was super friendly and welcomed us. We started off with miso soup which was nice and warmed us up on a cool winter evening. The miso soup had tofu, seaweed, and spring onions. Then, we had a starter dish of seared salmon and scallops while we wanted for our large platter. The salmon and scallops were incredible. The salmon was fresh and melted in my mouth. I am a big fan of scallops and loved the taste combined with the salmon. I wish we would have ordered a few more plates of the dish... We waited for our large platter that showcased several rolls such as the fresh salmon, tempura fish, and fried crab sticks. The unagi (eel) roll was nice but could have had a little more eel sauce. Then, the tempura prawn roll and spicy salmon with avocado were tasty too. The salmon was not spicy though. I enjoyed the sushi thoroughly and didn't way to stop. No one at the table did. Four of gals who love sushi shared the large platter. It's a good amount if you are not all starving. I recommend this place. I've heard they are super busy for lunch so opting for dinner was a wise choice. We felt comfortable and in no rush to finish our meal. I can't wait to go back and try out more dishes! They have only opened for a few months so I am so lucky I knew from early on so now I can satisfy my sushi craving. Best part of it all, I heard about this place through word of mouth! Hope you have a great experience like me when you go.

Not that I'm complaining because where it's situated is convenient for me to get to plus there's easy parking. Shinbashi has a $35 all-you-can-eat Japanese BBQ which is always a popular option. I fyou go this route, make sure to try their fantastic wagyu and marble beef. However, my husband and I always splurge on their $99 Signature Selection for two. It includes these tasty additional extras like Bacon asparagus and Bacon rice cakes. There's also this buttery cheese, sweet potato dish which takes about twenty minutes to cook up on the BBQ but is worth the wait. The service here is great. They always remember to refill my green tea and there's this delicious complimentary soup which comes in a teapot that you can easily fill up on and ruin your dinner if you're not careful. If you live further afield, Shinbashi Yakiniku is definitely worth the drive out to Underwood.

Being a Japanese BBQ place you basically cook the meat on the hot plate in front of you and dip in delicious sauces before noming down. Staff are genuinely helpful. There's Japanese rice beer to match, though I didn't see how that was going to be consumed amongst the plethora of meats in front of me. Also good to know - the meat is delicious, because it is marbled with delicious fat. I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. Defs popular amongst the locals.. Or those who know its there. So man up, make the drive, and give this place a go :)

After a tip of from a friend in the area, however, I decided to roll the dice - or should i say, rice! I was greeted by an older lady with friendly face the moment I walked in the door. And after trying manfully but ultimately unsuccessfully to get the damn thing fully closed I took in my surroundings. I absorbed the brown colour scheme, three smallish tables and... I had taken in my surroundings. This was clearly one of those places were all the action was saved for the kitchen, or so i hoped. I looked up to see a menu board that boasted well over fifty items, including typical Japanese favourites (teriyaki noodles, Japanese curry) to more out of the box fare (octopus balls, eel). I went with a dish that was accompanied by a yummy looking photo and while I'm not entirely sure what the ingredients were it sure was tasty. As I ate I noticed the staff preparing fresh sushi rolls behind the counter and opted to try the spicy beef. Perhaps not a traditional choice but one I can heartily recommend. A sentiment that goes for Oishi Sushi also.

We chose this sushi place because of it's predecessor - Sushi Station. We were sorely disappointed. By which I mean, Tokyo Express has taken the place of one of the most lacklustre sushi venues south of the city and turned it into an amazing, unique and exciting sushi restaurant that stands out compared to all of it's competitors. The staff do the usual adorably loud greeting when you enter, and offer seating at a booth or at the train. We always opt for the train as it has consistently been magnificently stocked with some of the most exciting and inventive plates I've encountered in my quest for the perfect sushi. They offer water or green tea upon seating and at each table/section of the train they have pots of soy, fresh (mild) Wasabi and pickled ginger. Tokyo Express have all manner of weird and wonderful plates ranging from the classic seared fresh salmon to almond crumbed king prawns, octopus balls, caviare and scallop tarts, fresh Japanese and western deserts and pretty much any type of fun and funky sushi dish you could imagine. I couldn't recommend Tokyo Express more. They have been quiet each time we have dined there and I really hope to rectify this! 5/5 will continue to go back. A quick hint - if you're choosing something that looks like it should be hot, ask them to heat it. Until they get as busy as they need to be, some things won't be piping hot (IE Karage, salt/pepper squid, gyoza) and they're more than happy to re-heat.

My husband and I used to live really close but we have moved to the south side, and we still drive across the city to eat here. (they didn't serve the super fancy stuff on those nights but it was a great night out to eat till you pop!)
