After a tip of from a friend in the area, however, I decided to roll the dice - or should i say, rice! I was greeted by an older lady with friendly face the moment I walked in the door. And after trying manfully but ultimately unsuccessfully to get the damn thing fully closed I took in my surroundings. I absorbed the brown colour scheme, three smallish tables and... I had taken in my surroundings. This was clearly one of those places were all the action was saved for the kitchen, or so i hoped. I looked up to see a menu board that boasted well over fifty items, including typical Japanese favourites (teriyaki noodles, Japanese curry) to more out of the box fare (octopus balls, eel). I went with a dish that was accompanied by a yummy looking photo and while I'm not entirely sure what the ingredients were it sure was tasty. As I ate I noticed the staff preparing fresh sushi rolls behind the counter and opted to try the spicy beef. Perhaps not a traditional choice but one I can heartily recommend. A sentiment that goes for Oishi Sushi also.

We chose this sushi place because of it's predecessor - Sushi Station. We were sorely disappointed. By which I mean, Tokyo Express has taken the place of one of the most lacklustre sushi venues south of the city and turned it into an amazing, unique and exciting sushi restaurant that stands out compared to all of it's competitors. The staff do the usual adorably loud greeting when you enter, and offer seating at a booth or at the train. We always opt for the train as it has consistently been magnificently stocked with some of the most exciting and inventive plates I've encountered in my quest for the perfect sushi. They offer water or green tea upon seating and at each table/section of the train they have pots of soy, fresh (mild) Wasabi and pickled ginger. Tokyo Express have all manner of weird and wonderful plates ranging from the classic seared fresh salmon to almond crumbed king prawns, octopus balls, caviare and scallop tarts, fresh Japanese and western deserts and pretty much any type of fun and funky sushi dish you could imagine. I couldn't recommend Tokyo Express more. They have been quiet each time we have dined there and I really hope to rectify this! 5/5 will continue to go back. A quick hint - if you're choosing something that looks like it should be hot, ask them to heat it. Until they get as busy as they need to be, some things won't be piping hot (IE Karage, salt/pepper squid, gyoza) and they're more than happy to re-heat.

My husband and I used to live really close but we have moved to the south side, and we still drive across the city to eat here. They have free green Tea and the wait for a table isn't too long, I'm not sure If management had changed but they used to do the second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month was every plate for $2! (they didn't serve the super fancy stuff on those nights but it was a great night out to eat till you pop!)

We started off with the agedashi tofu which I liked very much. The tofu cubes came out golden brown and I loved the consistency of the potato starch that was on the outside. It is served in a hot broth made of dash, miring, and Japanese soy sauce and topped with negi (certain spring onion). Then we had the okonomiyaki which was OK. It had no flair and a basic savory pancake made of flour, water or dash eggs, and shredded cabbage. It is usually topped with fish flakes and can be filled with different meats and noodles but this one didn't have anything else. We had the aburi salmon and aburi scallops. I was NOT impressed by the rice that came with these dishes. They were too hard and didn't compliment the beautiful salmon or scallops as it should have. The dragon roll was OK as well. The shrimp did not have a fresh crunch for me and the eel and avocado were not as flavorful as it could have been. I would suggest adding more eel sauce. You can never go wrong with more eel sauce. We ended with a plate of vegetable tempura which was pretty good. I'm pretty picky about my tempura and think it's necessary to have vegetables that are bursting with flavor and the tempura just enhances them. I am not the biggest fan of tempura capsicum (red and green bell peppers) and prefer pumpkin, eggplant, or sweet potato. The staff were very nice and the restaurant had guests coming in and out all evening. You can also BYO as well. If you're looking for top notch Japanese cuisine, I would not suggest this place but if you're in the area and would like super nice service with decent food in a clean and low key atmosphere, stop in. Overall: 3.5 Service 4 Food 3 Atmosphere 3.5

Upon getting it home I realised that the salmon was discoloured, smelly and slimy. If I had a cat (which I don't) I would have been in two minds as to whether it would have the slippery fish in its bowl. Giving them the benefit of the doubt I rang to tell them and received the advice 'chuck it in the fridge for 20 minutes and take it and it should be fine'........quality advise there. They did not listen to me and completely dismissed me after being a 3 year regular..........good luck Miku.......I will never eat there again
