I was obsessed with apple butter as a child and saw they had a signature drink with it as an ingredient. This was a no brainer for me to order and I'm glad I did. "The Eve" - toasted apple butter latter with caramel drizzle. I got mine iced. My Mom said she didn't want anything, tasted mine after we walked away and had us turn around so she could order something for herself. The best shopping area in the metro area! From upscale boutiques, to fine eateries, there's a place for everyone here that has the patience to fight through the Hwy 280 traffic to get here. The area is very clean and during busier seasons like Christmas, the area offers police to manage traffic. I do most of my shopping online now but I love to come to The Summit as a special treat to myself because it feels like just that when I visit one of their stores or restaurants. My favorite stores here include Belk and Sephora. read more

This is a top end shopping mall for the Birmingham area. It has some of the top high end shops in the country. It also has my favorite movie theater at this location. From AT&T to Bath and Body works, the selection of stores are amazing. Trader Joe's is one of my favorite here. Service is pretty good here at the shops I have visited. read more

I like the Summit! It's hard to believe it's been open 27 years! When it first opened it would be our "swanky" place of choice to meet up and to nosh! I recall the PF Changs being one of the first one's I had eaten at, and the Flip Burger was fun, too! When bridal dress shopping for my stepdaughter, we enjoyed a fun wine and cheese restaurant that has since closed. The Summit has always had a "big city," upscale vibe! Even though the Summit is much larger than Huntsville's Bridge Street Town Centre, I was excited when 10 years later, Bridge Street opened in Huntsville!! Summit and Bridge Street share a lot of retail places in common: Altar'd State, Anthropologie, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Bath & Body Works, Belk, Buckle, Chico's, White House/Black Market, Lululemon, Loft, Soma, and more. Huntsville also has many of the same restaurants as Summit. As far as outdoor shopping centers go, I think the Summit is nice and people rave about the views, which I never noticed, honestly. There also is a shortage of public restrooms and then there's traffic on 280....ugh! read more

The Summit is one of my favorite entertainment districts! You have everything here from restaurants, spas, salons, gyms, clothing, beauty, books, a movie theater, and now even a laser hair removal center! Parking in some of the upper areas can be tricky, but I can always find a place in the lower levels. The Summit has the only Barnes & Noble that I've been to since the one in Montgomery closed. They have an Apple store and great restaurants. Ah the Summit! Literally on top of a hill, this place has everything you could want/need. With the addition of Trader Joes, there are grocery items, specialty items, several restaurants ranging in price, as well as a bookstore and movie theater. I will say that I try to avoid this place from Thanksgiving - Christmas, due to the sheer volume of people who are here shopping/eating. Parking can be a hassle in some areas, but don't give up! Keep circling and you're bound to find someone leaving. read more

Most times, I'll come when the weather permits, but it always nice to enjoy the area when it's not too hot or cold. I presumed that the warning was in relation to National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day on January 27, but not many people were there that day. This year I will not make the same mistakes. We parked on top of the parking deck and picked up our food at the summit and when we got to our cars we were rudely told by mall security we couldn't stay where we parked and eat. That's stupid since I've done it a hundred times. Biggest thing the guy was really rude and unprofessional. To keep on this train of reviewing shopping areas, I will make my next stop at The Summit. This is a really cool area that the only real downfall is dealing with traffic... especially around the holidays. But the line-up of stores and restaurants they have are the best of any shopping center I can think of in Birmingham. There are parts of it that have spectacular views and a ton of traffic/parking spot hunting. And other parts towards the back that seem a little more sparse. They have had a few bigger stores close and tenants to seem to come and go. But the one's that are typically stellar have been there for a while. And unlike some other shopping areas in town, seem to always add some real heavy hitters to the line-up. So even though I avoid this place from Thanksgiving to Christmas, I am a big fan of what they have done here. read more

The Summit... sometimes saying the name will make you shiver. Despite the parking and the traffic, you know that sometimes you have to go there. It has great restaurants, shops, and a movie theater that make the hassle worth it. But man do you dread going there and having to fight through all the traffic for a parking spot. On the plus side, you do feel safe here - well lit, patrolled by security. Tip - Depending on what store you need to get to, it may be faster to go to the back entrance of the shopping center and deal with less traffic. read more

A useful collection of restaurants and higher-end shopping destinations south of Birmingham. Outside shopping as opposed to indoors. Lots of corners, lots of angled parking and lots of layers of elevator that don't really give an easy eye to finding what else is here. The view from Chuy's is awesome. read more

If you are coming to shop in Birmingham, you NEED to come here. It's a beautiful outdoor shopping area with a fabulous view of the mountains. Everything is fairly spread out so I would totally recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes if you are ambitious enough to walk it. Since we visited stores on opposite ends, we decided to drive since we also liked the idea of bringing shopping bags back to the car. There are also several restaurants to dine at like Cheesecake Factory, Flip Burger Boutique and Chuy's (wait times were about 1/2 hour on a Saturday so be forewarned). We really didn't have problems finding parking driving around but the area closer to the restaurants fills up rather quickly. As far as shopping, it's very much medium to higher end brands like Kate Spade, Madewell, Anthropologie and J.Crew to name a few. I found myself snapping lots of photos just because the surroundings were so picturesque. Especially the area closer to Saks with the huge decorated Christmas tree. read more

The Summit has became the "it" place for all the trendy stores. I remember when it first opened & there was only one stretch of stores on the bottom of the property that included Old Navy, Parisians (now Belk), Express, & Victoria's Secret. There were countless more including a theater. Then later on there was Saks Fifth Avenue. The property on the hill expanded with Urban Outfitters, Anthropology, the Gap, Pottery Barn and many more. There's also a large selection of restaurants for those not familiar. P.F. Changs & Cheesecake Factory just to name a few. Barnes & Noble is also there. While I love the huge selection of stores, the entrance /exit combo is dreadful during peak hours and holidays. The entrance/exit is off of highway 280 which is already a traffic crazy zone at certain times. Plus, there are exits to and from interstate I-459 almost directly outside of it. There is an apartment community that uses the same entrance/exit as well. Inside of the mall area can be overwhelming while parking. Just use caution and avoid busy times. The stores are definitely amazing & the mall includes a huge selection of them. read more

Is the 5 stars mainly because I am so happy a place like this exists in Birmingham? Probably, but still well deserved. I'm going to start with my one minor critique of this place. I wish there wasn't a road running through it. I felt a bit uncouth walking through the parking lot, finding a light to cross the road, and then through the parking lot again. Will this criticism ever go anywhere? Definitely not since the structure is already built, but this did rain on my excitement of shopping here. Also, I did not realize when I parked that I parked at the bottom of the hill and although there are some shops there, I had to walk up what felt like a million steps to get to the rest of the shopping area. Now that that is out of the way, let's celebrate that this place exists! Not only do they have all the staples that I love, J Crew, Banana Republic, Kate Spade, BCBG, etc, but they have cute stores that I was not aware of before. (My sister scoffs at me for never encountering Madewell, but yes, I just discovered it). Every store that I love to shop at is here (ok, I just realized they didn't have Zara, but I'll survive). This is not your lower end stores, but medium to higher end, and I appreciate that. Bit of advice, if you are planning on eating at a restaurant here, be prepared to wait. I went to Seasons 52 at 7 p.m. on a Wednesday (yes a Wednesday!) and it was a 30 minute wait. Popular area. read more

Come for an hour and end up spending the day! I have always really loved going to the Summit. They have everything you could possible need. Most recent discovery, if it's possible makes me like them more, is that they are predominantly dog friendly. Shopping: Great selection of stores to choose between. Larger scale department stores (think Belk, etc) to smaller brand labeled locations (North Face, Gap, etc) to a long list of home goods stores. From totally casual to formal there really is something for everyone. Food: So many options here! One of my favorites Chuys (Tex Mex at its best!). Flip Burger, Cheesecake Factory, Taco Mama, and so, so much more. Then if you want something sweet they have Nothing Bundt Cake and Steel City Pops. In addition to this they also have Trader Joes (still need to get in here) and an Apple store. Catch the latest movie at the Carmike Cinemas. Plentiful parking on both sides of the road. Really this outdoor mall has set the bar high for other malls in the area. The only thing they didn't get right is there is no easy way to walk from one side to the other. My boyfriend's ignorant sister (who I love, believe me) had the nerve to ask if we "wear shoes in Birmingham". To that I'd like to respond that yes, we do wear shoes in Birmingham. And we're also more gracious and have better manners. And we also shop at Saks Fifth Avenue, Coach, Tiffany's, BCBG, Anthropologie, Max Studio, Smith & Hawkin, Pottery Barn, L'Occitane, Restoration Hardware, and a gourmet grocery store whose name I've forgotten, among other fine establishments right here at The Summit. In the Summit alone, we have two restaurants who have earned Wine Spectator awards. There's also a Whole Foods nearby and some more fine dining down the road. I'm so fed up with Alabama jokes I could cut a bitch. But, being the nice girl I am, I will instead defend Birmingham's honor as best I can as an out-of-towner with family in the region. The Summit is an excellent shopping experience. The selection of shops will never compare to Union Square in SF or shopping in NYC, but here in the South, this is the place to be. And the people? Kindest I've ever met. Service is out of this world and beats the hell out of San Francisco retail service. Just one more reason I love the South. Oh! And no one here has EVER made "California" jokes, which I appreciate immensely. read more

To say I love shopping is an understatement. It is what I do when I'm bored, when I need cheering up, when I'm feeling happy, and when the sky is blue. And when I go shopping, I drive on I-459 right past the failing Galleria straight to the Summit. I remember when people used to talk smack about The Summit. "It's too far. It's too expensive. It's OUTDOORS?!" All of these things are true depending on where you live in Birmingham, what you like to buy & whether or not your legs work. I personally love that it is outdoors. It makes you walk outside & actually enjoy the sunshine. I count it as my exercise for the day. But for those who want to hold on to those extra pounds, there is a shuttle service, albeit, an unreliable one. In the past few years as the Galleria continues to lose stores & customers, the Summit has increased retailers & restaurants. They even have a Pinkberry now. Parking has even become an issue outside of holiday season, especially up by Flip Burger & Anthropologie. As for stores, they range from low cost (GAP, Urban Outfitters) to high end (Saks Fifth Avenue). A few "boutiques" have opened up. Lotus Boutique being a popular one for dresses. There is a fancy schmancy nail salon, aptly named Venetian Nail Salon. For the intellectuals, the Barnes & Noble here has great study tables & comfortable chairs to read in. For the high school crowd, there's Johnny Rockets to hang out at. The Belk's shoe section cannot be beat. It's huge & carries designer to everyday wear. This Belk also has the best sales--its where I score all my Theory & Marc by MJ for 70-80% off. Food--so many options now! Urban Cookhouse is new & definitely recommended. The Cheesecake Factory is open late (1AM on the weekends). Flip Burger is super trendy. Chuy's is great for a laid back time with friends. The Summit has something for everyone. It is definitely one of the few redeeming places in slow to grow Birmingham. I always try to squeeze in a shopping trip here when I'm home. & coming from shopping in NYC & ATL, that's saying a lot. read more

The Summit in Birmingham is a shopping mecca. You literally need a full day to cover all the stores in the Summit. This place has a large outdoor mall with a large variety of stores. It is the ultimate in shopping indulgence. The Summit caters to everyone. It has a little for everything here. There is Saks, Anthropologie, Coldwater Creek, Apple, MAC, Belks, Pottery Barn, L'Occitane, Lucky Jeans, BCBG, Anne Taylor, Bebe, Urban Outfitters, Sephora, Gap, Barnes and Nobles, and the list goes on and on. Not to mention some really great restaurants: PF Changs, Cheesecake Factory, Johnny Rockets, Village Tavern, Panera Bread, FLIP Burger, California Pizza Kitchen, and much more. The major negative fact about the Summit is the lack of accessiblity between the stores. If window shopping is not for you, you'll need to hop in your car to drive from store to store. I wish this place had an easier alternative. They should have a shuttle service that takes customers around the center. read more

I went here over the holidays to have a cappuccino after 10 on a Thursday night. Now if you live in Birmingham, you know everything is pretty much closed down at 10, no Starbucks, no anything. My brother and I thought of the Cheesecake Factory at the Summit. The cappuccino was way better than any I had in Birmingham. I really enjoyed it and the company with my brother. The service was excellent. The Summit is the premier shopping mall in Alabama. The stores are so clean and the grounds at the Summit kept pristine. It was well lighted at night, so it felt safe. My favorite stores there are Banana Republic, Apple Store, and Barnes and Noble. read more

CALLING IT A DAY! The Summit is a huge shopping mall that is located at the top of a hill that allows for great views of the city. If you go to Chuy's you will have a lovely view and a great photo op. It is a mixed use development with apartments on site. It has a very eclectic mix of tenants including stores like Clarks, Belk, Marmi, Saks and Trader Joe's. Some of the stores were new to me so it was my intention to explore them. However, today was a super hot day and it was actually not a great day to visit unless you are going to only a couple of specific stores. I only lasted about 30 minutes before I decided to call it a day because I wouldn't dare try on clothes while hot and sweaty. I also exercised mercy by not dragging my husband around on this miserable day. Be aware that you will be walking quite a bit if you want to see all or most of the stores as they are spread out. This mall is best visited in the cool of the day or during the fall months, so on my next return to the city, this will be tops on my list. I look forward to a fun and unique shopping experience when I do visit again. read more

It covers two sides of the street, and you are not really able to walk from one end to the other, unless you are a mountain climber, as it is not called Summit for nothing.
