The Stupa is a new Nepalese restaurant/ takeaway which has opened on the site where Chimei Chinese takeaway used to be on Leith Walk.
I've only eaten there once, but fully intend to go back as it was ace! I went in at lunchtime which runs from 3pm 5pm. The full menu is available at lunchtime I think, but we chose from the lunchtime special menu. They had a choice of 2 or 3 starters for around £2.50 £3 each and a couple of mains that were about £4.50 each.
To start we had vegetable soup (£3) and some spring rolls. The soup was lovely tasty, fresh, filling and homemade, but the stars of the show were the spring rolls. I can honestly say that they were the best spring rolls I have ever eaten! They were clearly home made. They were stuffed full of noodles & vegetables and were crispy and light with not a hint of grease. They came with an amazing tomato chilli dip and a side salad. There were 4 pieces (2 large spring rolls cut in half) and were great value at £2.50.
For the main we opted for a couple of the vegetarian Nepalese curries. You could get rice or a roti flatbread as an accompaniment included in the price, so we opted for one of each. Considering the price was £4.50 each, the portions were large we got a large bowl of perfectly cooked basmati rice to share as well as a homemade roti. The curry was great a good selection of vegetables in a tasty sauce which was more stock based rather than oily that you can often get with Indian curries, so it didn't feel unhealthy.
The meal was washed down with a perfectly chilled bottle of Khukuri Nepalese lager at £4.50 for a large bottle that was enough for two people.
The restaurant has been decorated using lots of bright colours and has a relaxed feel. We sat upstairs, but it looked like there were lots more tables downstairs too. The staff were really lovely friendly and attentive.
I just wanted to review this place as it was so nice and I always worry about new ventures like this closing down before they have a chance to get going. It doesn't have a website yet or any internet presence, so I wanted to spread the word! read more
