From the cheerful greeting upon our arrival to the delicious desert everything was top notch. The meals were wonderful and the service was quick, friendly and professional. We were so impressed that we returned yesterday for the Sunday lunch. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and again the meal exceeded our expectations. We shall return whenever we are in the vicinity.

What really impresses me is the range of drinks. Whatever your tipple you can get it here. It's also quite a young clientele. Think I'm probably getting too old to be looking for young crowds but I'm clinging onto my youth a while longer yet. I like to have a beer in one hand and my guitar hand free just in case. We saw Grays Court Hotel, imagined what it would be like to stay in such a place, and may have made our way into the back garden to discover the huge outdoor seating area. As this wasn't the day for a drink in the sun, we walked inside to discover a wonderful seating areas upstairs. To our surprise the drink prices weren't much different from anywhere else in town, so we made ourselves at home in two chairs by a window in the library and ordered some drinks along with the Mackerel Paté with bread. The food and drinks were excellent. The staff were hospitable and helpful. And it was safe to assume we lounging in one of the best possible places on a rainy day in York. The forecast the next day was warm and sunny, so we couldn't resist coming back. After a brief wait, some tables opened up outside and we new that we were now enjoying the sun and drinks in one of the best possible places on a sunny day in York. We popped in on Christmas eve to meet some friends for coffee and sat upstairs where it's quite intimate but also roomy, with a balcony looking over the main bar. The coffees were good and we snacked on a few bites while the kids had some tasty avocado on toast. I was eyeing up the burger menu for a good hour before deciding I'd just grab something back home - damn I wish I'd had that burger though as I can imagine it would have been good! Very friendly staff, a great old converted building, great selection of craft beers - yep - ticked all the boxes for me! These guys must be mind readers too as when trying to coax me in for a drink later on they actually said "we have a great selection of Japanese Whiskeys if you're into that" - and yes, I am so I know I'll definitely be back in very soon when next in Knaresborough!

Now this is grand to the extreme. This mother is one stylish player with decadent furnishings and a sophisticated feel. What's more you get tables that light up, built in ice buckets and a real baby grand piano. To make me even giddier, they do fizz by the glass. Is this place for real? You don't even have to move because a delightful hostess will see to your every need (within reason). The drinks list is awesome too. If money is no object then go for a deluxe Champagne. Or try one of the zillion or so cocktails that will blow you away. If you want aged rums, no problem. Plus, you'll find some of the finest cognacs. James Bond wouldn't look out of place here.
