It was in fact, rather unromantically, the place where I went on my first 'date' as it were with my current boyfriend about three and a half years ago! Not ideal, but hey - we're still together now, so it wasn't all bad! Basically, for the Hogshead little has changed since then. I think we had a cheap burger and chips to soak up the copious cheap lagers we were drinking, and it was totally pub-tastic food. Not gourmet, frankly, but certainly it filled the alcohol shaped hole in my stomach! There's plenty of places to sit in here too, being one of the larger pubs around, so never fear if it looks busy. (Which it invariably does!) Cheap, cheerful and a tad on the sporty side at times, this place is all right with me. Totally dandy!

When you walk in it's not quite a pub and not quite a bar either, there's sofas knocking around and pine type tables and chairs. There's also the brief moment you walk in and the locals collectively look at you, but it doesn't last long and it's not too bad. We were actually really surprised by the food, a waiter came to the table, took the order, which was nicely shocking in itself, some of the menu bits were two for one, as was all desserts, and for the two of us i think the total came to £14 for a drink, main, and pudding each. Saturday afternoons when the sports type events are on make the place a bit crowded, but on none match days I find it to be all ruddy right.

They do have a range of drinks but seem to mostly sell beer - the bottle of martini they dug out for me looked decidedly dust. It tasted fine though, and the prices were good. It's very comfortable and welcoming inside but there's also an area to sit outside at the back, which we opted for because it was a lovely summer evening. A popular place with young professionals, it is guaranteed to be busy most nights of the week, especially Tuesday, which is student night. Drinks on offer to the student population of Leeds include double vodkas for as little as £1.50, and at these sort of prices, you can be sure of a good night. On weekends, drinks can be a fair bit more expensive, sometimes even around £6 for doubles and £3.50 for bottles, but the impressively eclectic mix of music, attractive people and a stylish setting means that Tiger rarely fails to deliver in terms of a good night out.

We had our work Christmas do here in December, and with definite trepidation, I attended. This trepidation was vindicated by the fact that the place was saturated with hoards of customers, literally packed in like scantily-clad-vest-and-chest baring sardines ("which way's the beach?!"), a large proportion of whom were both rude and ignorant. We had our own private function room but since three different companies had been squeezed in on the same night this did not help us out when it came to waiting at the bar. I soon found out also that our own private bar had no lager on tap and that bottles of beer were...£4.00! What in the name of all-things-glorious is that about? Sick. So, I decided to wade through the masses and try the main bar. I think more people's sweat contacted my skin than is humanely safe. Eugh. Having waited patiently after two people pushing in my pint of lager came to something between £4-4.50. *Jaw hit floor* Our buffet was an odd mix of cold meats, potato, quiche and other bits with the bizarre other option of hot rice and a suspect looking beef casserole or green thai curry. Weird. Not-good-weird. I had as much as I could since, for just shy of £40 for the outing, I was going to get my money's worth. We had one measly complimentary glass of champagne to accompany our buffet. For whatever reason our company was situated in the entrance room where there weren't even proper tables to sit at with our food so I ended up hunched over my plate on a sort of poof-type-seat. Whole thing was naff. Prices - ridiculous. Staff - not bothered. Food - meh. Patrons - gah! Don't think I'll be back.

I was impressed that they incorporated the lemon design into the shop-front's lettering, and that they had other designs and memorabilia that nodded towards Ian Brown and the gang, so it clearly wasn't just a place that had used the name but knew nothing about the band. They also played a lot of Roses' influenced music which is always good, but, because of this, there were mainly just groups of lads acting stupidly due to the cheap beer, and very few women or civilised people on the evening I went. It's got its own character though, and, if like me you're a big Roses fan, you owe it to yourself to check the place out. You probably won't want to spend all night here though.

I'd heard from somewhere that they were somewhat of a cocktail bar, and having recently become a convert, I was keen to see what these guys offered. The bouncer welcomed us into the folds of this beautifully brick-worked hove, the ground level area of which is all rather cosy, and my friend and I picked up a menu to take a look at what they specialised in. The bar is laid out curiously, with a few intimate window spots to sit, shelving and high stools along the wall, and candles adorned on each table. The menu revealed a number of standard cocktails, with all the usual suspects that folks enjoy, including Caipirihnas, Mojitos amongst others. I couldn't decide, so asked the bar maid's advice. I explained I'd been on the gin, and wasn't sure whether it was a seaworthy idea to move to rum at this stage, but she insisted that she was a gin fan in any case -so a Bramble it was. And a very tasty one at that. The toilets are located up the stairs, but having not explored the depths, we ventured down, descending into the basement of bar. It reminded me a lot of the funky basements you can find in the many terraced houses of Hyde Park, only cleaner, better decorated, and with one key element that I'd hope never to find in a Hyde Park house: a skeleton in the floorboards. Yep. You read me right, they've a skeleton affixed in the flooring, complete with Red Delicious apples about the bones, darkly visible through a coffin shaped piece of glass. How flippin' cool is that?! I'm barely over the excitement of this. Anyway, in amongst the skull lampshades, and faux fire lighting fixtures you'll find a fabulous new rock bar. The music was loud enough to properly enjoy a bit of Pantera, Led Zep and Pearl Jam, but not so obnoxious that I couldn't enjoy a chat with my lovely friend. Fabulous! I shall be back.

Can't remember the price cos it was late and my 'concentration' wasn't at its best. What I do remember is a 15%? wednesday discount as long as you are abusive to the bar staff. I accepted the challenge with glee and felt liberated afterwards. The music was a perfect volume in that you could hear it clearly but could still talk. I think the basement was shut, but ill try it out next time.
