Fox & Hounds - Exterior

Fox & Hounds

I was so excited to revisit the Fox and Hounds after visiting a few years back after doing a…read moreNational Trust walk nearby. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed! The only good thing was my past memories! My mum and I visited on a weekend day evening, we arrived at 5:50pm, but the pub was not yet open yet, as it closes between lunch and dinner time. As it was a nice day we sat outside while we waited until 6 when the doors open. Obviously as we had been waiting, it was quiet and we were the only people in there. The place looked a bit tired and to be honest, a bit dirty. We ordered food, I went for the special, beef pie with garlic potatoes and vegetables and my mum had ham and eggs. When our meals came out, I was quite disappointed with the 'slice' of pie. I could swell the garlic from the other side of the room and when I started eating my meal, there was one strong flavor that stood out and overpowered everything else, but I couldn't identify it. It didn't taste like it was the garlic, I couldn't put my finger on it. My meal was extremely oily, the plate was swimming in it and the pastry from the pie soaked it all up. There wasn't much meat in the pie and I wasn't too keen on the red cabbage. All I could taste was the oil. If I hadn't been with my mum, I probably would have left the meal as the minute I bit into it, I didn't like it. On the other hand, my mum very much enjoyed her ham & egg. Considering we were the only people in there, the service was very slow and we waited an age for people to collect our plates so we could ask for the bill. Even when they did, they didn't even ask how our meal was or show any politeness. I think the reason why I enjoyed the pub previously was because it was a chilly day outside and the pub has a huge open fire. I think this pub is best for drinks in front of the fire, to which I may return and do in the future, but I won't be having the food!

The Farmhouse - The Farmhouse

Getting in a little late to go to London, we turned our attention to something close to the Gatwick airport. After finally sorting our Uber rides, we were off to The Farmhouse. First impressions were of a traditional British pub experience, which was a good start. Our clumsiness of grabbing a table and figuring out whether we needed to go to the bar to order or wait to be served, surely gave us away as "not locals." Our server was friendly and provided us with our menus and took our drinks order. The one shortfall was that the menu had a number of items not available and with an assist from a customer, two of us needed a rethink on their meal. In all, it was 4 Fish & Chips, One Farmhouse Burger, and a Battered Halloumi burger, plus an order of calamari, and 4 tomato and garlic soups. There were zero plates taken off the table that were not empty! I had the Halloumi burger, which had a great, crispy batter topped with some guacamole mayo with a red sauce on the side. Really good. Then we doubled down and hit the dessert menu! Two warm chocolate brownies with salted caramel ice cream and four plum tarts. We asked for some custard on the side because who doesn't like custard?! Save for the debate about whether it was more a pie than a tart, another set of empty plates were the only evidence left. Would definitely recommend The Farmhouse!

We also go the Camembert, olives, and some ciders. This was definitely worth the effort to leave the airport, get an Uber, and then return to the airport. Cute place with good food.

The interior is just like the demeanor of the staff: warm, likeable, and feels like home. In fact, it was incredibly difficult to determine where we wanted to dine, because of the sheer cuteness found in the decor and ambiance of The Grumpy Mole. It was just too damn nice outside to take a beautiful, sunny day in England for granted. So, we opted to sit on their patio and enjoy a near perfect day. Knowing how delicious the curry is in the UK, I opted for that choice and my high expectations were met. The chicken was tender and well prepared. The curry flavor was abound but not overpowering, while the naan and rice were soft, not stale. But the real highlight of the experience was the charcuterie plate packed with meats, cheeses, olives, and more. If only I had the fortune to return to England more often, then I would visit The Grumpy Mole on every visit. For now, I will dream of that day and hope it is on a cold, winters night, where the interior of the Grumpy Mole is cozy and warmed by a crackling fire place, of which I am sitting by while sipping on a piping mug of cider.
