Usually when you go to a 'fancy' place and ask for tap water, you can tell they somehow are disappointed or sizing you up as a 'cheap' customer. Our waitress happily took our order of some tap water before we even got down to ordering our drinks (a bottle of wine in the end) and was just very attentive (not overly so), happy and polite, just exactly how you'd wish all wait staff would be! Now on to the food... I got the cauliflower truffle soup as an appetizer. It was delicious and although I'd call it a veloute more than a soup, there was no disappointment for my tummy. My partner got a chicken liver and fois gras dish with some pineapple mixture kind of like a coulis. And the tastes matched surprisingly wonderfully. For my main course I had the onglet steak which was cooked as asked (yay!) and was delicious, my partner had the pheasant and although he said it wasn't an item he'd get often (who does want pheasant anyway) it was still cooked well and a unique change. The food was very tasty and the wine just a pure pleasure. The quantity of food was perfect, just what you need, no more, no less. The service might be the asset of the place: friendly, professional, and anticipating your needs. The pub decor is really comfy and tastefully furnished. The staff are friendly and down to earth and don't get flustered even when its completely rammed. Its interior is cosy in the back and vibrant and fun in the front room. There a several booths in the main room or some big leather armchairs to relax with a drink. The shelves offer free board games, for you crazy gamers out there. There is a very decent range of wines and beers on offer. This is not a cheap "Old Man Pub". Prices can compare with pubs in central London, but the great atmosphere and the happy bar staff make it worthwhile. They have a great Sunday Roast with a great offer for Vegetarians and also several meat options. I've also seen some serious man-sized BBQ equipment outside on a sunny Saturday afternoon and they always seems to have new and exciting additions to the menu.

The other 5 in the party had beetroot in at least one and mostly two courses with many enjoying beetroot in the salad. Obviously they had fresh beetroots and that's kind of what it's about isn't it. All our our meals were prepared very well with nice fresh ingredients. A number of us had duck which I am told was fine. We shared some cheese to close which was quite fine. The wine selection was fine. We had a couple bottles at nice prices including a 2003 St. Julian under 50. We will return and I expect whatever is fresh (seasonal) and nice will dominate the menu.

The menu consists mainly in various French food, but in case you were worried they also serve the English breakfast. I didn't try it, but it looked very good. Really superb coffee, if you're into that kind of thing.
