I was so excited to revisit the Fox and Hounds after visiting a few years back after doing a National Trust walk nearby. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed! The only good thing was my past memories! My mum and I visited on a weekend day evening, we arrived at 5:50pm, but the pub was not yet open yet, as it closes between lunch and dinner time. As it was a nice day we sat outside while we waited until 6 when the doors open. Obviously as we had been waiting, it was quiet and we were the only people in there. The place looked a bit tired and to be honest, a bit dirty.
We ordered food, I went for the special, beef pie with garlic potatoes and vegetables and my mum had ham and eggs. When our meals came out, I was quite disappointed with the 'slice' of pie. I could swell the garlic from the other side of the room and when I started eating my meal, there was one strong flavor that stood out and overpowered everything else, but I couldn't identify it. It didn't taste like it was the garlic, I couldn't put my finger on it. My meal was extremely oily, the plate was swimming in it and the pastry from the pie soaked it all up. There wasn't much meat in the pie and I wasn't too keen on the red cabbage. All I could taste was the oil. If I hadn't been with my mum, I probably would have left the meal as the minute I bit into it, I didn't like it. On the other hand, my mum very much enjoyed her ham & egg.
Considering we were the only people in there, the service was very slow and we waited an age for people to collect our plates so we could ask for the bill. Even when they did, they didn't even ask how our meal was or show any politeness.
I think the reason why I enjoyed the pub previously was because it was a chilly day outside and the pub has a huge open fire. I think this pub is best for drinks in front of the fire, to which I may return and do in the future, but I won't be having the food! read more
