The menu is extensive and includes lots of favorites like pork belly (looked great) for hungry lunchers. However, it also had the ubiquitous ham egg and chips, loved by so many and (as I discovered) a great chili jacket potato (Judi had the equally delicious bacon & Brie version) All this is accompanied by glorious 'funnies' on the wall of the bar, the beams, and in the lavatories - e.g. "If I had a pound for every time somebody told me to grow up I'd have the coolest train set ever" (see if you can find it!) If I hadn't got the best local ever in the Griffin's Head at Chillenden, I'd move to Ide Hill just to claim The Cock as my own. Do try it.!

First impressions were of a traditional British pub experience, which was a good start. Our clumsiness of grabbing a table and figuring out whether we needed to go to the bar to order or wait to be served, surely gave us away as "not locals." Our server was friendly and provided us with our menus and took our drinks order. The one shortfall was that the menu had a number of items not available and with an assist from a customer, two of us needed a rethink on their meal. In all, it was 4 Fish & Chips, One Farmhouse Burger, and a Battered Halloumi burger, plus an order of calamari, and 4 tomato and garlic soups. There were zero plates taken off the table that were not empty! I had the Halloumi burger, which had a great, crispy batter topped with some guacamole mayo with a red sauce on the side. Really good. Then we doubled down and hit the dessert menu! Two warm chocolate brownies with salted caramel ice cream and four plum tarts. We asked for some custard on the side because who doesn't like custard?! Save for the debate about whether it was more a pie than a tart, another set of empty plates were the only evidence left. Would definitely recommend The Farmhouse!

I'll explain why and try to be concise. The cuisine is exceptional. There's a good selection of quality drinks. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming -- the sort of place where complete strangers tend to strike-up conversation. The location is perfect, overlooking the Village Green, with a big beer garden behind, and a vast playing field behind that. It's a lovely village, nestled in the gently-undulating farming landscape of rural north-east Herts -- no wonder Braughing was recently awarded the prestigious "Village of the Year" accolade. The pub's menu always includes the best of local produce, from locally-reared beef to local pork sausages, alongside popular country pub dishes. (Braughing village is famous for, among other things, the delicious local sausages, and this is a good place to sample them.) Did I mention the pies? A different pie every day it seems, and you won't find better pies than these. I don't make a statement like that lightly.

Unfortunately, we were ten minutes late due to traffic, and when we arrived we were told that we would have to order quickly as the kitchen shuts at three. We were rapidly seated and lingered over while we perused the menu. We started with a glass of Prosecco each and I hastily went for the pork belly and my partner went for the celeriac risotto. We didn't order starters, and I didn't really get chance to have a proper look at this part of the menu. While the children's menu is substantial, it is definitely aimed at the older ones and there wasn't really anything suitable for my 15 month old. This wasn't a problem as we knew he could share ours, plus we had brought reserves! The food came quickly and was very tasty, I couldn't fault either dish but before I had even finished mine, the waitress came round with dessert menus saying that we would have to order straight away if we wanted one. I think this is the first time that I have been made to order dessert before I have finished my main! My rhubarb and ginger cake was good but my partner was a little disappointed with his cheesecake. We ordered tea and coffee to finish and were finally able to relax. Although I can't complain about the food or the friendliness of the staff, the fact that we were rushed so much from the minute we walked in put a dampener on the experience for me. If you are not prepared to serve dinner in an unhurried fashion, don't take a booking at that time. Yes, we were 10 minutes late which was entirely our fault, but we could have also ordered starters delaying the whole process even further.

The food is fantastic. Last night I had the Beef and Stilton Pie and I can honestly say it's one of the best pies I've ever tasted - and there has been a few! I'm not a huge fan of Stilton but it's subtle enough to taste but not overpower the meat and they throw in a little cheddar to simmer it down. Both the landlady and chef are very friendly and welcoming - just what you want from a country pub.

Judi's Sauvignon was declared to be excellent as I had a pint of the best ale in the world (Harveys Sussex, of course!) The baked camembert was served with a generous amount of toast which in turn was generously buttered with garlic. The fillet steak was perfectly cooked and a great cut, it was served with plenty of good chips. There is plenty of parking at the side of the pub. I look forward to another visit.
