My experience at the Standing Order was good. Maybe because it was my first entry, but I was impressed by the place, a kind of noble hall, large as a 9 aside football pitch, high decorated ceilings, and plenty of cheerful people. Cosy and warm inside. We went in on a cold Thursday night (c. 9:30pm) and were lucky to find a free bench. We only took some usual drinks. I could observe some chips and burgers hoovering above the hands of waiters, so there is food option here. The bar was large, and served by a good number of barmen (and bar-lasses), so it did not take ages to be served. I did not paid much attention on the prices because I went straight to a 3x RUM and the prices were from 2.09 (McKRaken) to 2.99. I did not locate any particular drink deals, though at a glance, I thought that the prices were reasonable. I felt no foul play with the crowd, though I have not been deep inside the mass since our table was at the perimeter. So far so good... However, being so large, I had to shout so that my furthest friend (about 3m away) could listen me at the other side of the table, and I had difficulty to understand some conversations simply because of the high level of noise there was from the mass. So maybe it's not ideal for a big bunch of gangsters to plan a theft or a brood of chicks to share their passion stories. While (I assume!) that for small groups (1)2-4 heads, it would be a great place, also because being crowded, you may get a better chance to find amusement (in fact there was a group of sexy lasses which I can define very well) or the partner of your life (who knows!). The places it's self is huge high ceiling that are lovely to look at. The fact there is no music lets you get lost in the hum of conversation. Fast service when it comes to food and the food is good. A great place for cheap drinks and food. 2 burgers and 4 pints were only about 16 pounds. The food was a bit above average pub fare and the beers were great. Many guest taps were on offer; however, many were empty. Big bonus: There were 2 TVs on the wall in the main that were playing soccer. Big bonus: There was no background music. Benefits as much from being one of the few Wetherspoons in Edinburgh as much as it's crippled. A cheap retreat off Princes Street during the day, tucked off Rose Street from the overpriced food-forcing pubs. A cheap excuse off George Street, it's secondary entrance, on a Saturday night for pretenders to overpriced bars and night clubs to get well oiled before stumbling into more up market establishments. The majority of the staff don't really care too much about good service, more getting their jobs done although the floor managers always seem keen to impress. One incident involved ducking into The Standing Order for a quick and cheap but seated lunch for my visiting parents and grandparents. The Wetherspoons in Belfast is a sticky, cheap larger and alcopops affair for underagers, so for them the site of the wonderful ceiling, vault and bookshelves were unexpected. However, after being served food we were one set of cutlery short and had to ask the same 'waiter' twice for another set (as there were none beside the condiments) although his concentration was devoted to his mobile phone in between tables. Eventually were retrieved when asking an eventually unapologetic manager after going up to the bar, although as far as he knew we were just given 4 sets of cutlery and this was the first time we had asked. On top of this my granny's tiny milk jug was knocked over, thankfully in the middle of the table. Again the 'waiter' picked back up the jug without an apology, nevermind a fresh serving, and returned to his phone. I'm all for squeezing out as much skive as possible on a minimum wage job, but I'd never attempt it in front of even one customer! In conclusion: not worth more than a quick few or a cheap retreat, but never going to be worthy of a memorable occasion. read more

THe Standing Order on George Street is one of those places that really didnt benefit from the smoking ban. Situated in an old bank this place looks flash from the outside, but stinks of stale beer and vomit soaked carpets inside. As part of the Wetherspoons chain they have very cheap drinks offers, which attracts the worst type of clientale. No matter what time of day you go in there is always someone slumped against the bar! For somewhere so big you'd expect it to have a decent atmosphere, but in that they're truely lacking too. Drinks prices are cheap, but pints are watery, wine is nasty and warm and mixers lack fizz. The food is cheap and just about edible, but service is pretty poor and presentation non existant. read more

The Standing Order is right in the heart of Edinburgh in George Street. The building was formely a branch of the Bank of Scotland. Not a lot has been changed to the inside since its days as a bank still have the same toilets downstairs! Food and drink have to be the cheapest in the city centre but value is the only where I would say it comes up first against any of the other bars or restaurants in George Street. Fine if you don't want more than fed and watered, but if you are visiting Edinburgh I say that there are many many more places better than you should try first. Personally i'm not a huge fan of the Standing order. It is a large pub based in the City Centre of Edinburgh on George Street, which serves cheap drink and food as all Wotherspoons does. The atmosphere isn't the best in the place, it is far too noisey, with people talking, but its more like shouting, as people are talking over each other as it is so noisy. The place is massive, with huge high ceilings, in a very old building. Its not a bad place to meet up before a night out, but wouldn't recommend it for a buzzing night out. could not agree more! they get the punters in by being cheap in every sense of the word apart from the location and building's grandeur! There is no system at the bar and someone's always eyeing you up for what ever reason.. many many leather jackets.. dirty floor, toilets not clean, tables un-wiped etc.., staff mostly rushed off their feet, many punters waiting to be served. this is the 'get 'm in' 'stack 'm high' kind of bar.. though if you are looking for a cheap pint..I'd suggest staying home with your mates and make a lot of noise .. you will still get more atmosphere than this place.. 1 star for the cheapness and location read more

Some say, and with good reason, that once you've been to one Wetherspoons, you've been to them all. The same menu, the same drinks offers, the same threadbare carpets and so on. Perhaps it's only after frequenting several that you can realistically come to prefer one over the other, just as somebody who has never been a whisky drinker might never tell the difference between an Islay single malt and a Bell's, whilst a seasoned whisky taster might detect the subtle overtones of peat and barley in the former that are absent in the latter. But I for one have spent enough time in budget drinking establishments to become something of a Wetherspoons connoisseur. I can vouch for this particular one to be entirely passable; the décor is rather lovely, just what you might come to expect from George Street. The building itself is suitably impressive, having once been a large bank. The staff are really cool, and the drinks aren't (too) watered down. Oh, and it's dirt cheap. read more

The Standing Order is just like any other Wetherspoons bar - cheap and cheerful! It is a huge pub in the centre of Edinburgh so its great to pop in after a day of shopping or a lunch break with friends. It is always really busy so sometimes can be tough to get a seat and can get really loud, but once you are in you can easily spend a few hours here. It is our watering hole during the Fringe Festival this year so I am already looking forward to our bottles of wine and burgers at the weekends. I went here the other weekend with friends who have a young child. I chose this venue as I'd heard that the Standing Order has a children's licence and offers special 'family' rooms (small noisy rooms with tables way too close to each other). I won't be back. As previous reviewers have mentioned, this used to be a former bank. If you are in the bar area look up to the ceiling and you can see some of its former beauty and glory, giving you an idea of the past magnificence of this old building. Sadly, it now feels like a modern soulless noisy drinking den. Yes, the food is good value. Nothing special but then again the price is cheap compared to other venues on George Street. I had a vegetable curry which was alright, and my partner had fish which was nice too. Drinks are reasonable priced too. So why don't I go back? Because whenever I closed my eyes I suddenly felt transferred back to McDonalds. The noise, dirty tables, staff that were run off their feet, and the crowds. It all contributed to feeling like I was in a fast food joint - only difference was that alcohol was being served here. In conclusion, I'd say the Standing Order is perfect if all you're after is a cheap meal and drinks. But stay well clear if you're after an intimate dinner for two or something like that. I disagree with others who've suggested it's always busy here. There are times I've gone in (Sundays especially) where it's quiet and I've been served immediately. I usually go for a meal here, as it's more of a blokey drinking spot in the main areas, but the family and dining areas are lovely. The food itself isn't the best I've had, but I've never been disappointed by the quality or the service here, as the youthful staff seem to do a pretty good job. It isn't too hard to tell that this place used to be a bank, especially when you notice that the massive safe is still there! There is a high ceiling and the walls and tables are all oldschool. The place can get pretty packed and hard to get a table. The tables are just scattered everywhere so goodluck. I hate that you order at the bar for everything. Im not used to these uk standards. For games they pull down the huge projector and screen off tvs as well. The place is sick! I LOVE IT !!! This was absolute absolute favourite place to go to while I stayed in Edinburgh for the summer. Yes, you have to order at the counter/bar (standing order - ha!), but then you can sit down and they'll serve you. This happens usually very quick and with friendly staff!! The location is huge and still got this familiar feeling! I loved to hang out with friends, also if only for a drink. The Standing Order, located on George Street in Edinburgh is a typical Weatherspoons pub. It was converted from an old bank which provides a bit of interest. The ceilings are high and there is some nice architecture. There is several different areas to sit and you will normally find a table, although you sometimes have to wait at peak times. There is a huge selection of drinks to choose from with some hard to beat promotions. The staff seem quite friendly. There is no music in this pub like most Weatherspoons pubs. I don't understand why all the other reviews think this place is mediocre. The pub is in a former bank which looks really nice and has lots of space. It isn't cosy but the food makes up for it. I got a burger with chips and a pint for 5.50 quid. The chips are the best that I've eaten in my life. They taste like actual potatoes on the inside and have a crisp, well seasoned crust. SO GOOD. This pub is bloody great, we were staying in a hotel that charged £13.50 for breakfast and as 1 of the party was vege and 1 vegan we felt we would give wetherspoons a whirl. The staff were amazing- helpful and more attentive than some of the more expensive places we ate at. The pub itself is just fabulous a lovely interior and a great looking victorian retro style bar. My son had a huge vege breakfast, my friend eggs with smoked salmon and a bagal andthey adapted the vege breakfast for me we all had drinks and the whole lot came to less than £15 I cannot say enough about this place-well done wetherspoons and well done the staff that lookd after us last friday morning. read more

The Standing Order has got the potential to be a great pub, but the poor service, the stinking toilets and the carpets that stink of stale beer make it a place not to hang around in. It sells a great selection of real ales at a good price, but all the negative points overshadow this. I suggest a quick couple of pints of Deuchars at 99p a pint and then move on. read more

This bar is an addition to the Wetherspoons bars. Its a bit of a let down, although the drinks are pretty cheap there is no music so there isn't much of an atmosphere. Its always crowded so its really hard to get to the bar let alone served. And they have a huge projector screen for football/rugby games. I live in New Town, so I go here at least one night every week. It's one of the very few bars on George Street that serves cheap drinks. I don't say spend your entire night here, but definitely start out here. read more
