Found this restaurant online and made reservations because we wanted French cuisine and the ratings were high. Cute restaurant, waitress was amazing! Things were good (until they weren't ). Grilled octopus was AMAZING, should have ordered an extra one for dinner! Now, ordered the bronzino à la plancha and the bouillabaisse de marseille. Looked awesome. The bronzino was soo salty my mother couldn't take it so it was sent back. The bouillabaisse was very salty from a few bites, but I didn't want to have to send two dishes back, so I let mine sit. Whomever the chef was that night was either just tossing salt everywhere, don't give a damn, or just doesn't know how to season food and that's not acceptable for any restaurant people are spending their money. Management that night, was very gracious, professional, and apologetic. They brought another bronzino dish and I just took mine home hoping the flavor would settle and I could Dr. it up (shouldn't have to do this from a restaurant of this caliber and should have requested a new dish ). Well, the dish could not be saved by any means so I called management the next day. Whomever the manager was on duty (a male) was rude and gross! I explained that I had barely touched it and would bring it back and would appreciate a refund b/c why would I want the same dish you have proven you have not mastered or even made palpable. I was told "he was not going to give me a refund" and they would (reluctantly) make another one. So, I drive ALL THE WAY back over to the restaurant from Shaker Hts. the next day with the salt dish. They made another one and when I got home it TASTED EXACTLY THE SAME, maybe worst. I was so disgusted with the food, wasting gas and time, and the manager's attitude, as if I did something. And what French restaurant doesn't have rabbit and foie gras on the menu!?! I came all the way from out of town to treat my parents and that's the food and behavior received!?! Beautiful ambiance as soon as you walk in and it flows thru the restaurant onto the patio. I ordered the bouillabaisse de Marseille. The saffron broth definitely made up for the unseasoned seafood in the dish. Friends ordered the bay of fundy salmon and one of the specials, mediterranean shrimp pasta. The Standard is truly anything other than standard. A fine dining experience on East 185th street with excellent food, great customer service, and beautiful atmosphere. I love that this place is in my neighborhood and that I get to stop by at the drop of a dime knowing that I will have a delicious meal. I personally enjoy coming by myself and taking a seat at the bar. Their bourbon smash is one of the best I've ever had and I always get it. They also have an extensive wine list. The menu is a fusion between Moroccan and Italian cuisine. They have a ton of lamb dishes which is right up my alley. I think I've tried them all. My fave is the lamb risotto. The shank is soooo tender and the risotto is full of cream and flavor. The Moroccan spices really elevate each dish. I've also tried the lamb couscous, which is tasty also. Today I tried a Moroccan lamb sausage that was on the appetizer menu. Again, the Moroccan spices made it delicious. I also had the burrata salad. I will say that the tomatoes were a bit soft for my liking for this type of salad. However, they did put some type of spice mixture on top, which made it very flavorful and made up for the soft tomato's. I typically expect an heirloom tomato to be pretty sturdy. Their bread service is phenomenal: two soft dinner rolls, with a trio of hummus, olive tapenade, and oil and balsamic vinegar, that comes with every entree. It's truly irresistible. Nice ambiance in the front dining area but it fills up quick sometimes so I'd recommend making a reservation. Made reservations down Saturday night. I was hesitant but hubby made them so we could take my grandson prior to the ballet. We were seated on the patio. Yes the patio on Saturday night. With it concrete floor and metal table and chairs in a blizzard. Yes the patio had temporary roof and sides and propane heaters. But they were no match for the winds and temps in the teens. My feet and ankles were freezing. Mid way through our meal the manager/owner came of to see if everyone was cozy warm. No,actually we are not. It is freezing cold out here. Well we can move you to the table over there. ??? Seriously that will not make a change. Well we had tables upstairs. WHAT!!!you had tables upstairs and still sat me in the tundra???? I said never mind we are half way through dinner. Dinner: surf n turf, stuffed salmon and the braised short rib. Short rib was tender but a bit dry, fingerling potatoes were cold and green beans ( always undercooked for my liking). Everything cooled quickly because of the environment. Waitress disappeared until end of meal then said I feel like I am ignoring you. Hmmmm, Ya think ! We need the check and boxes. I will be right back with those. Outstanding restaurant! This is a hidden gem in the city of Cleveland. My party of seven went here Easter Sunday. We enjoyed the atmosphere, music, food, and service! We ordered the short ribs of beef, ribeye steak, stuffed salmon, steak on a skewer, and lamb. My lamb was cooked and brought to the table in their Moroccan cookware (a tangia) then at the table carefully poured onto my plate. I do recommend this restaurant and we will be back. read more

This restaurant has been on my to go to list for a few years now and I'm happy I finally got an opportunity to try it out. The neighborhood isn't the greatest and the exterior isn't too flashy but the inside and patio are very welcoming. The patio is actually very nice and maybe one of the little hidden gems in Cleveland. There's an outdoor covered bar and all the patio seating is covered. Table bread was served with tapenade, olive oil and balsamic, and an assortment of olives and cheese. We went through two servings. It was great. We decided to order an app and got the shrimp au gratin. Wow, what a home run this was. I've never had anything just like this, and it was everything I didn't expect. The shrimp was sizable, the mushrooms were tasty, and cheese cream sauce was perfect. Dip your bread in the cream and you have a happy face. The short rib entrée may be one of the best cuts of short rib I've ever had. I was definitely impressed. We also got the lamb shank and risotto meal and it was also pretty good. Made a reservation for a Saturday 7pm dinner for 2. Called the restaurant directly midweek to make the reservation and informed them that it was for a special occasion. Talked to the person on the phone about table selection and ended up deciding on the dining room. Received a call on Saturday at 2pm informing me that they could no longer accommodate my reservation. They offered seats at the bar or outside on a day in which the temperature would be 56 degrees at dinner. Both of those were unacceptable. What is the point of making reservations at a restaurant that does not honor them. read more

When I heard we were headed to 185th Street in Cleveland for a meal, I was wary (note: I am a Chicago and New York restaurant snob). I was wonderfully and positively surprised. Cool, dark room with a fascinating menu whose specialties are Italian and, interestingly enough, Moroccan. The menu is BIG. Really big. Maybe even too big...and with that said, there were so many great possibilities (and a few specials) that it was difficult to decide what to have. We had the moroccan curry seafood pasta (probably named something different on the menu...this is from memory) and a carne asada. Both were absolutely delicious. Portions were BIG. Really big. Take them home and eat at least one more meal big. And they were really, really good and really creative in their preparation, presentation, and taste. Most impressively, the owner was expediting food (perhaps short staffed, perhaps staying in touch with his clients) and made a point of checking in with us two or three times during the meal, answering questions about how the menu came to be (business partnership), the importance of decent size portions (I don't want anyone leaving hungry and telling their friends they had to go to Five Guys afterwards), and generally having fun talking restaurants. Wine list was interesting. We gather from the owner that the list used to be much deeper, and that for obvious reasons they decided to consolidate it. Still, nice variety of US and European wines at a variety of price points -- nobody should be disappointed by the list. I never expected this good -- dare I say great -- a meal in this part of town. Will definitely be back and prowl around different parts of the menu. Off the beaten track, and worth the trip for sure. read more

I had been thinking of trying this restaurant for some time. Upon considering it, I encountered the head chef. He was incredibly rude, even threatening, when asked about his menu. Unfortunately, he is incredibly defensive about his choice to serve fattened liver from force-fed ducks. I wish that I could review a wonderful dinner from the The Standard but my reservation for tomorrow is now cancelled - 9:00 pm on Friday evening - I am called and informed that we can choose the patio - it is March 8th - or the bar - or sit in a private room upstairs - what does that even mean? We chose to give The Standard a try for a celebration dinner of our 45th Wedding Anniversary! We made the reservation a month in advance. Confirmed this week via text but no phone call telling us that there was no room for us in the dining room. Really disappointing. Truly bad form. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed the culinary experience at the Standard. It is tucked into an unsuspecting area of Cleveland and is truly a gem. They accept reservations and appeared to have ample seating inside, outside covered and outside uncovered. The menu is truly a culinary experience. The 4-star recommendation is based on the menu being eclectic and not offering a few more simple/basic menu options for those that may not be adventurous with their palate. Luckily our group was open to the adventure and enjoyed our selections. The drinks were great, staff was amazing, and food was awesome. Second time here. Kate was the bartender she is new and was great. However, Steven not my liking. I ordered kettle one with lemon muddled martini style,...I got spoken to like I didn't understand my drink. Like I was confused, after I explained it again, he asked me did I wanted juices?!?!? Again I took my kettle one with With lemon--muddled.. I didn't have the issue with the miscommunication or even the fact that someone did not understand my drink. My issue was the way he spoke to me like I was confused, or didn't understand. Like belittling me or that I was stupid .. It's ok if he didn't understand how to muddle my lemon. I have been a foodie in Ohio for many years. Until a week ago, I had never heard of the Standard. I was this day old when I found out what I was missing. Four of us ate - well almost everything on the menu. 1) octopus. Omg. Just a home run out of the gate. Delicious. (It was way too small for $26 but when I tasted it - bam!) 2) crab - omg 2. 3) mussels. At this point I know we are in for something special. The broth - killer. 4) Quail - at this point the manager stopped over. Probably wondering if this was our first time left out of the nuthouse. 4 apps. 24 oysters. Cocktails. 5) spaghetti - I could not believe someone ordered it after the apps - like spaghetti? Cmon. But the sauce was amazing. 6) filet. Hold on this but the au Poivre sauce was a delight and it tasted pretty darn good. Manager stops again. At this Point, he's prob thinking we are insane. Orders us drinks. Nice touch. Ok. Those were the Wow. I had three minor complaints and they are so minor I buried them down here. 1) the cocktails were just boring and ok. I ordered the jalapeño one and was like "where's the jalapeño?" 2) the filet was not to temp. I don't know why I'm a jackass and order medium rare minus but 99% of the time I do. I like just above rare and not quit medium. 3) there was just way too much peppercorn on the filet. Way to much. For my taste. I personally haven't wrote a review and a while but the experience at The Standard has brought me back. To start this was a recommendation by a colleague. It's been a while since I've been in the 185th area and so much has changed, initially i was skeptical but I was happily proven wrong. Alright the details you all want. The food, ambience and service. I'll start with ambience, it is a intimate dim lighting setting, great for a date night or close group of friends. Gives you an upscale feel but also still gives a relaxed environment. The food was amazing, we had three dishes the crab croquettes, braised lamb shank risotto and grilled chermoula bronzino. All 10/10, personally brought out by the head chef and owner which was nice touch. My personal favorite of out of the three was the braised lamb shank risotto this dish was accompanied by acorn squash and mushroom white truffles risotto. Tasted even better the next day. Crab croquettes were huge with fresh lump crab, I'm pretty sure they were hand cracked crab in house, overall very tasty. The bronzino has light and refreshing and it was fillet right in front of us by the chef table side. We also have a couple drinks as well the stand out was the cherry bourbon drink, it was stolen by my fiancée multiple times. The service was great, quick, interactive and attentive. Our waiter made great recommendations. As we all know although food is imperatively important at a restaurant, the people and service rendered is the back bone of what makes or breaks the experience. Had dinner there last night. Food and decor were of a high standard. The service however was below par, almost non-existent. We were seated at a table by the front door, yet our server was primarily attending to tables far in the back. We only saw him every 40 minutes, and then only when we had to ask another server to track him down. Drinks took 20-30 minutes to arrive and the courses even longer. He didn't even have the courage to bring the check to the table and the bill, when it arrived by another server, wasn't split as we requested at the start of the meal. However, we ordered one of the specials - twin 8oz lobster tails; when the bill arrived the charge for this one entree was an astounding $120. This practice seems misleading. As a customer it's essential to be informed about pricing upfront to make educated choices. Had I known the cost I would have opted for something else. Transparency is key to building trust, this experience left me feeling deceived. This place may be a best kept secret! I have sat at the Bar and enjoyed a window table...I DID NOT KNOW THAT ONE OF THE BEST PATIOS IS HERE! Behind the building, nestled under draped Morracan fabrics, between tall fences covered in vines and plants... Strategically placed water sources that trickle sweet, relaxing sounds. Free-Standing plants and artwork are everywhere and socially distanced tables have white linens. The bar is cozy, quaint and full of charm with ceiling fans spinning the warm days air and cool nights. I have been here before but never enjoyed my visit as much as sitting out back! The edibles... a wonderful piping hot French Onion soup, the flavorful Lamb Lollipops, the Paella pot and the 20oz bone in Ribeye are all tasty, but tonight, I wanted a Special Entree. The Crab stuffed Salmon with a rich Bechamel sauce topped with two huge shrimp was spectacular. A few thick but carrots and broccoli spears sitting aside creamy mashed potatoes.... How can this place only have 4 stars? Seriously, it was an incredible 5-star experience! We even applauded the chef when he came to check on us. The duck was the best I've ever had. If you're a beet fan, the beet salad was amazing too, with the goat cheese and pistachios adding the perfect touch. Lovely cocktails too! Our waitress was exceptionally friendly and did an excellent job explaining the menu and ensuring we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was romantically lit with soft curtains between tables for privacy, and they also offered a charming outdoor seating area with heaters. I don't know if the quality/service went down or if my expectations are very high, but it seems past COVID most restaurants just can't get their game going, but maybe not for a lack of trying. 'Standard' falls into that category. Standard has a lot of potential - its a great space and their patio is beautiful so our expectations got raised a bit. We had a rather large party so I will give servers their due, they really tried their hardest but kitchen just couldn't keep up. The host of the party pre-ordered the appetizers so we got to try few of them: Beet Tartar (absolutely excellent, the best thing on their menu, we couldn't stop eating it), Standard House Salad (average), Beef Carpaccio (very good), Lentil Salad (ok, had some kind of weird taste), Tuna Tartare (good, nothing extra ordinary, but good), few people tried Octopus and oysters and liked it (I didn't try them so can't speak from personal experience). We then started to order for ourselves and that's when things went a bit down the hill. Between my wife and I we ordered asparagus soup (average), Foie Gras (very disappointing, I expected little more out of it) and the house special of beef kabobs (extremely salty and dry - I didn't want to send it back and feel the host of our party feel bad, but kitchen really messed up this one). Also, we got our beef kabobs (main course) before our soup and appetizers and it seems either kitchen or servers forgot about them until I reminded them. Desserts - skip them, anything we tried wasn't worth it (we tried 3 different ones). It might be made in-house but its average. Plus kitchen was out of decaf coffee and their espresso machine was broken - hope they fix it soon. 'Standard' has a lot of potential but it does have a bit to go to pick up its game but certainly has tools to get there. read more

Went for a birthday dinner and I am happy she chose this place. This place was so good. A 5-star experience that I did not expect. Because of the location you would think it was just an average restaurant but this place is offering a fine dining experience. I loved my cocktail it was perfectly made. I ordered the crab cakes for an appetizer they weren't bad but they weren't great either. My entree was as seafood pasta. It was a little pricy but for the portion size and quality it was definitely worth it.i I will definitely go there again. read more

Party of four...ordered several apps (mussels, sardines, eggplant, octopus) which were decent, as were entrees, but one of us was served what appeared to be a "baseball cut" top sirloin, when she ordered a filet mignon...this is simply not cool !! Not only did they substitute a far cheaper cut, but it seemed that they injected it with brine as it was salty on the interior and cooked incorrectly (she ordered it medium well, but it came RARE). Needless to say, she took one bite and was done with it, but not the type of person to voice a complaint or make a scene (so I'm doing it for her here) !! read more

Delicious authentic Moroccan lamb mrouzia with plenty of sweet currants, apricots, and dates to complement the meaty juicy lamb shank. The Faroe Island salmon was absolutely top notch with a perfect light crisp to the skin and incredible moist flesh below accompanied by broccolini and carrots. The mint tea vodka cocktail was delicious as was their version of a marg with a bit of jalapeño syrup and a nice mildly spicy rim. Excellent service, very busy, super classy inside. read more

While I've heard many speak of "The Standard" in Collinwood, I had never made it there until Thursday, when my "foodie" daughter, (@thingsivebeeneating), planned my surprise birthday dinner there for our big family. The ambiance was so relaxing- dimly lit, sheers gently flowing between tables, a long beautiful bar, an open kitchen, and an outdoor garden patio area that truly felt like an oasis- you might forget you were in CLE on the eve of Halloween. It was lush, vibrant, and warm. The music that was piped throughout the restaurant, vacillated between "La Vie en Rose" and Frank's "I Did It My Way"...truly transported you to a fine dining establishment in Paris. We were seated in front of the open kitchen. I don't always enjoy this view, but the people in this kitchen seemed relaxed and happy to be there! While cooking, they seemed to have a camaraderie going- lots of smiles, and zero sense of being harried. (I noticed when a couple came in for dinner on the later side toward kitchen- closing, the staff there visually appeared welcoming nonetheless.) Our group shared several bottles of wine, tried the innovative cocktails, and also the old tried and trues. We loved our server, Nicole. She was knowledgeable, welcoming, and fun! She quickly delivered the complimentary, freshly baked rolls with a trio of tapenade, olives, and oil/balsamic. My daughter warned us to come hungry, as we'd be wanting to try several apps. We had frog's legs, crab croquettes, tuna tartare, French onion gratiné, beet carpaccio, and escargot. Other seldom seen items such as quail, foie gras, bone marrow, Moroccan lamb sausages, etc. were also available. We took SO long to decide on our entrees- they ALL sounded magical. We had aromatic, Fez chicken (complete with tagine) served with Moroccan couscous, Dover sole, pistachio encrusted rack of lamb, Chef/Owner Said's bountiful paella, 24-hour braised short rib, and an epic "bowl" of pasta bolognese. My daughter prearranged a brought in cake, so we didn't try the desserts, but Said amped our finale with a round of fancy nut-and-chocolate-encrusted coffee concocted liqueur shots! (Insert chef's kiss!) This dinner celebration was nothing less than over the top! We had a fantastic evening! The tuna tartare appetizer was perfection and different from anything I've had before. Paella was loaded with seafood and meat and could easily feed three, if not four. Chicken couscous was also enormous and had great flavor and very juicy chicken. Bolognese was solid but a disappointment compared to the other meals. This has quickly moved up the ranks to one of my faves in Cleveland. I also love that this has the feel of a true neighborhood place. Upscale but casual, and a nice energy at the bar and from the open kitchen. My only complaint was that they started mopping the kitchen floors around 9:30, which brought a distinct odor of Comet cleaner with bleach wafting into the dining room, which interfered with dessert. But, truly, an exceptional restaurant that we'll visit often! read more
